I am constantly reminded, by my own actions, but I just don't listen.
Last night in league, I was asked to coach a teammate in a tough situation that he inherited on the table.
Mistake #1: I abandoned my usual coaching approach of asking 'what do you like here?' To me, that is generally the best choice, as it reflects the players comfort level of what they are confident of being able to do.
Mistake #2: Instead, I suggested my shot that was based on an very unrealistic opinion of what I might be able to do if I shot the best shot of my life.
With hindsight..This was a formula for failure.
I failed my teammate and the team and myself for suggesting such a bogus possible solution to the layout.
..And then later, shooting basically a spot shot on the 8, and the 9 near a bottom pocket..I played to 'overcut/miss', if missed and 2 rail the cb toward the corner as a two way shot, to hide behind the 9, if missed and have a shot if the 8 falls.
Hit the 8 bad and the cb 2 railed toward the corner pocket to scratch(I thought). I caught if with the shaft in frustration just before it did. BIH to opponent...he got the 8..game over.
I know better than to stop the cb...idiot move. Insult to injury: two teammates immediately tell me that cb was about to hit a pocket point and not scratch .
I cost our team two games last night..pretty stupid..:embarrassed2:
