I'm assuming the owner would chill, filter and purify the water used in this toilet? If not, the analogy doesn't work too well.
Why would he? It's the same tapwater that comes out of the faucet at the counter.

...If $1 for a bottle of water is too much money for you, I don't need you in my business.
Before I understood, now i'm lost. Aren't we talkng about $1 bottles of water here? Or is he charging $1 for tap water?
As I said in a previous post, I have no problem with charging a buck for a bottle of water if the owner had to pay for it himself. But, personally, I'm not paying a buck for water. I will pay for something else to drink.
The expenses for water in the bathroom is exactly why they should be charging $2.00 for a bottle of drinking water. I guess you don't get that.
The place I worked at did greens fees for the weekly league 'packet' or info sheet(s) + rack of balls for their designated table (it was an in house league). It was $5 per team (5 man teams). This was before they paid their weekly league dues which, as you said, went to the league itself.
Free pool after league matches (league was on 'off nights' so no loss there) and drink specials for league players (happy hour wells, buckets of beer at hh prices, etc) kept many of the big spenders there till closing time which added a lot to the ringout. Not sure what sort of crowd you have or if that would work for you, but something to think about!
At Hanks pool room in Denver they used to put out glasses and a pitcher of ice water for free. Now that is gone and there is a sign "Bottled Water" $1.00.
Any opnions on this?
To the first quote above, read the quote by spider1 right below it. THAT is my point! I'm actually surprised spider1 posted that in another thread, because I really thought he didn't get it. And, spider, now I'm scratching my head, because either you really don't see the correlation, or you are trolling in this thread.
You give away free pool time after league, cut the drink prices, but feel your business will fold if you don't charge for a glass of water? Doesn't make sense. And, as your quote shows, it's all about business and giving your customers a little to get a lot.![]()
Notice the words 'big spenders' there? And in case you didn't know, league players spend money so of course they get kickbacks like free pool on league nights! If they sat there sipping free water practicing all day and complaining about bottled water prices they would not be getting free table time on their league nights!
This really isn't hard to grasp.
Exactly. Thanks Spider1...read on...
Is this thread REALLY about charging for bottled water...or is it about an owner who was fed up with a bunch of people getting/expecting free "amenities" while not spending a dime in the facility.
Neil...if you spent as much money in my place as you state you do at times (not the times when you're "window-shopping") I'd give you the bottle of water...no charge. If someone is spending a couple hundred on table time like you state...I will gladly give away the $0.27 I paid for the bottle of water!
However, for those people who ONLY "window-shop" I'll be damned if I give them something for nothing...IT'S A BUSINESS...NOT A BUDDY'S BASEMENT!!! If you want free pool and free water...go play at your buddy's house!!!
I just started a poll in another thread because of "window-shopping" league players...

Just so you know, and I'm glad you "get it", as soon as I pull up the waitress is getting me a drink. And, sometimes I will get a little free table time too.
As to your statement of those that only window shop, well, when I ran several rooms, it all depended on just who those window shoppers were. If they were an old guy that spent his life playing in that room, but due to age no longer could, yeah, he's getting some slack cut to him. If it's some young guy that doesn't do anything for the room, then he's out.
I can’t believe some people wouldn’t be too embarrassed to complain about a $1 bottle of water at a pool room (or any business for that matter).
I have a buddy that pays over $15k a month lease on his room. How the hell do you think he pays that rent?
And, if some fool was so classless as to bring in his own water, I’d ban him simply to improve the quality of my clientele.
Pro Sporting Event CHARGE 5-7 Bucks for the same bottle of H2O, I guess a buck is a DEAL at the Pool Room. I bring my own Diet Rite Soda, or Water to the Community Room that also gets a buck for a Water, or Soda in the CAN.
I think the $1.00 bottle Water is a way the Pool Room owner can help pay the rent, if this cause his customers to go elsewhere, there is a message there.
Has anyone ever heard of or seen a water fountain? Seems like that may be a solution to the problem.
