I arrived in the Philippines two days ago. When you first get off the plane and enter the airport, there is a distinct aroma that the Philippines has. If you've ever been here, you know of what I speak. After one day you become used to it and forget about it. But it's here, 24 hours a day, everywhere you go in Manila.

The sights and sounds of metro Manila are overwhelming for the senses. Standing on any busy street corner, your brain is invaded with a cacaphony of sounds. Whoever first wrote of the teeming masses, must have been talking about Manila. The flow of people in all directions, mixed in with honking cars, screaming children, ear screeching buses and thundering trucks. There is no safe place to stand, one can only attempt to stay out of the way.

I am in an internet shop now. The place is packed with kids playing games and yelling in Tagolog. The rock music is set at about 110 decibels. That's after I asked him to turn it down.

I went to the Philippine Ten Ball yesterday. They have set up a very nice venue in one of Manila's maga Malls. In fact this one is called The Mega Mall. There is also the Mall of Asia, The Super Mall and various other SM giant malls. All of them larger and infinitely more crowded than any mall in America. Most of these giant malls are owned by the Sy family, who happen to be supporters of professional pool. They are great venues for the promotion of major pool events over here. In fact next weeks Women's Ten Ball Championship is in yet another huge mall right across the road. All of these malls have large exhibition halls! Makes a lot more sense then paying big bucks to rent the PICC or Araneta Colisium.

I can relate to what Makabenta has gone through to put this event together. A lot of work went into the planning and preparations for it. And it looks good, with nice posters, a spacious arena with lots of good seats and a stellar field of players. The field is much like last year's World Ten Ball, with players from all over and a host of filipino's, with most of the champions left out. I won't go into the politics here. Suffice to say, that the big names from filipino pool are not in attendance. That is not to say that players like Manalo, Gabica and De Luna aren't excellent players. They are.

There is live television daily via ESPN Star Asia and ABS-CBN (filipino TV). Once again, 4-6 hours a day of live pool. It's all full length matches, so unlike the dated and edited stuff we are fed by ESPN in the states.

Manalo played an excellent match with a young Indonesian player (Susante) and fell 9-7. They both played some very good pool. Jasmin went hill-hill with Ernesto Dominguez. She made a tough run out to get to the Ten Ball for the match. She came up short on the 50 yard line, between the side pocket and the corner. Jasmin took her time and got down, looking solid. I was in the front row, ten feet away. At the moment she took her final back swing, a cell phone went off loudly right next to me. She totally jerked on the shot and missed it badly. There are signs posted everywhere and announcements made about cell phones, but no matter. Some IDIOT cost her the match!

Jasmin has too much class to even react. After the miss she said nothing, just went and sat down. When Ernesto made the easy ten ball, she got up and shook his hand. What a classy player she is. Not one gripe or show of bitterness.

I'm off to the venue again today.

Jay, Very nice post as always. I'm sorry I can't meet you. I have to go back early and flew back to HK last nite. Do enjoy your stay.

I'm envious, Jay. I haven't been in Manila in (well, let's just say a very, very long time). I doubt if anything is the same as it was, except for the great people.
Enjoy.

Interesting read. Don't be scared to take a pic or two, it sounds like something to behold.

How's your sweet, pretty, Fillipino girlfriend, Bunny? I bet she was ecstatic to see you!

Thanks for the update, please keep 'em coming!

Thanks Jay. I know I'm always anxious to get your updates and I'm subscribing to this thread! :groucho: (I always thought Groucho was cool!... the Lenny Bruce/Jonathon Winters of those days.)

With every post of yours Jay, I feel like it's another chapter from your book that must have fell out during shipping. Or maybe the start of your next book!

There you are and book review post....

I been looking for you, now I know where your at. I thought you were leaving next week, i hope the car thing is ok, i was in LA all week and had it solved, The first part of the week I was at home with a backache but it got better,

have fun in the PI, Dont beat up on those guys to bad over there, at least give up some weight before you beat them all.

Also I did read your book, most people here dont know but I read about 3 or 4 eariler versions of it while Jay was writing it, Let me say Jay put one hell of alot of work on it before he sent it up to the printers, the content, stories were all there in hte first draft that I saw, they were compete but kinda "Dry" for lack of a better word, What I read 6-8 months ago and what was printed was totally different, the book gives the drafts the 7 and the last 3 playing 10 ball. He put alot of hours into "Writing" the facts alone dont make a good read, Jays book is a great read.

I was honered to be mentioned i his book, A long time ago I started a thread "I'm calling out Jay Helfert!!!" to write a book-i was serious, it was a big thread-i didnt expect it to be but it grew as i remember(i need to find it), I was serious, Later I will find a link to it, So in his book he credited me as the guy who kicked his ass into gear to write it-right here on AZ, I think thats kinda cool too, I know he would have written it otherwise. But still I was truely honored to named in his book(a first for me). Jay and I got reaquinted after many years and I got to know him alot better and heard so much good stuff, I didnt want to be the only guy hearing it, it was to good. So I kept asking him when is the book comming??? The good news there is more, Jay int a one trick pony, his writing skills improved the to the 7 and the last 3 over when he started his book. I'm sure the next one will be better,

This one is the best book in pool written by a player I have ever read, its a 10/10. i'm not knocking the other books at all, Mr. Beards books are great, but they are instructional, Same for Max instructional. Buddys book is great but he didnt write it, R.A. Dyer has written some fantastic books about other players. Ray Martins book was my first book about pool, 99 shots-everyone should have it. Mike Masseys book is AWESOME for teaching his shots. But Jays book is different as its written 100% by a player about what he did, I havent read all the books, but from my perspective. Its the best book by a player about himself, beyond that its still one of the best books in pool-I'd say the exact same thing if I didnt know Jay. THere isnt a person who loves pool that shouldnt read this book.

OK, now I gotta talk some trash......

I will be mentioned in his 2nd book again, as follows....."Fatboy after working his ass off finally beat me playing banks" :p. When, not if but, when he says that in his next book that will be my dream come true, Just like he said he had goals to beat some players in his book and he made it happen, well so do I, so Mr. Jay you better stay in stroke,:D. I better keep playing hard for that to happen(it aint gonna be easy, I gotta pay my dues), I figure by the 3rd book he will have to say "Fatboy now beats me at one pocket"....... Love you buddy. I'm gonna write the 4th book, "Pool Wars:Fatboy strikes back and wins".:eek::eek:;)

Back to his current book enough trash talk today, All the facts in it check out too-not most but all the facts, I was around some of the spots Jay was(california stuff) and knew alot of the people in the book the stuff from the 80's and 90's and There is no BS in this book, no Hollywood fluff, sizzle, exaggerations, none what so ever, all the stories are how it went down, Jay never said "I beat him for $2500" when it was $800, Which I respect that, If a book is fiction then thats cool but if you claim to account for your lifes stories them tell them like it was, dont lie to people who just paid you $20 to hear about you, not some bullshit. Jay didnt do that-its ALL true!

have fun in the PI, Call me when you have a chance I dont care what time of day or nite it is, just when the good news comes along I want to know.

love ya buddy

Fatboy

Thanks Jay...

Thanks my friend for all the updates and info...

Sure wish I was there with you to take in all the action and all..

Hey, Maybe you can find out how they , from what I've heard, "take care of and cultivate and groom the young champs there"...

I have always wanted to know how that process works over there...where the greatest players in the world come from ...

I think someone said that the young ones who show promise are given a manager and trainer or something like that????

Anyway...have a great time and a safe trip on your return...

You are the best ...

Jeff

I would have had that idiot escorted out. I remember at an IPT tourney in Orlando the waitress came by picking up trash and crumpling it up loudly as players were down on their shots.

Jay,

How much for a RT plane ticket to Manila? I see prices from 1-4k. Just curious if there are better out there.

Dave

P.S. Just ordered the book :)

my perception of this hill-hill miss on jasmin's part was that it was her fault, not the cell phone's.... just conjecture of course.

all in all, who cares about pool, what are the women like there :)

If the New Orleans was an Iwo Jima class (LPH 2) ship, you're lucky you weren't in sickbay with sea sickness.

To answer a few questions. A good price for RT from the USA to Manila is around $900. How do the young players get so good? They are in action daily number one. And they get to watch the best money players on the planet every night. Ronnie, Warren, Alex and Francisco were on One Side last night. PLAYING, not watching. The room was FULL of players, and smelled of money and action. I love this room, so old school. All about action and making games and matching up. Bartram would love it here.

One Side is my favorite room here. Small with only eight tables, packed to the gills every night. When a table opens up it is a mad dash to make a game and grab it.

The tourney is winding down, final four play tomorrow. Single elim. from there for the last three matches. Double elim. up till then. I really like the refs on every table. Good ones too for the most part. All are filipino pool players who have ref'd many money matches at One Side. The tables are Brunswick Metro knock off's. Something was lost in the translation though. I think it's cheap slate. They don't play like the original Metros and the pockets are nearly four and three quarters. Too forgiving for these top players.

Still a good tourney. Ted Lerner and a fellow named Jonas from Europe are doing commentary. Both good IMO. Naturally good coverage every day. Two full matches daily on live TV, three tomorrow.

About my girl Bunny. A few of you know it is more about her that I come now. She is due in three weeks. I was totally surprised because I thought I was done with all that fatherhood stuff. But one lucky guy got though. :)

A daddy again after all these years. Her name will be Jalo. We made it up.
