I am just curious, but is this the guy who was dressed like Charlie Chaplin?

JAM
looks like him but I don't think that is him. of course the hat & wig etc they all look the same ;) Oh Jimmy I know you were playing around, I just wondered if this candy eater was really making alot of noise. I didn't see it. But good lord I heard about it. If she was doing that on purpose then she was out of line if not hey not sure what to say.

They call him "Pots and Pans," but his real name is Bernard Rogoff. He used to be a man of action back in Mosconi's era. His quick wit, sense of humor, and remarkable memory are incredible.

He got his name from peddling, as you might have guessed, pots and pans when he was on the road. He'd buy 'em for 20 bucks and then post 'em up for table stakes stating they were worth 60 bucks. :D

He is harmless and on a fixed income. No doubt, he was trying to hustle up some spending monies. :p

JAM

It was Pots and Pans.

It's kind of hard to believe there's another pool guy out there who dresses like this! :D

Jay Helfert knows him, and I am sure he can let us know whether Pots and Pans was there or not. :)

Pots and pans, yep thats him. I know he is harmless but people payed $$ to watch a match and he was talking to people while they wee trying to watch. He did upset a few. I have no real beef with him as long as the match is not on when he does his thing,

I had a great seat and was watching:
Efren and Mika on table 6 - Mika won 9-7
Thorsten and Carl ?????? on table 7 - Thorston won 9-1 or 2
Johnny and Chuck Evans on table 8 - Johnny won 9-0
and
Earl and Danny Smith on table 9 - Earl won 9-5

Pots and Pans comes by trying to make jokes and I am trying to watch LEGENDS play pool. I know he is harmless but he was very annoying at the time.

I also watched Scott Frost and Ray Robles - Went double hill and Ray won.
Corey Deuel and Dennis Hatch - Corey killed him 9 to not very many
Jose Parica and Gus Briseno (sp?) - Jose Parica won 9-7 I think
Hill Billy and Sparkey Ferrell (sp?) - Hill Billy won double hill.
Jeremy Jones and ???? - Jeremy won.
Tony Crosby and Stevie Moore - Crosby won

That was all in the first 4 hours of the tourney. WOW I still can't believe it.

Desert Shootout Recap

What an amazing week it was! On Tuesday it looked like no event was going to happen, and then the guys at Kolby's came to the rescue. A big prop to Doug and Jimmy Joe! Without their help it wouldn't have come off. They allowed Chuck and I to completely make over their poolroom in one day, turning it into a tournament arena. We had bleacher seating for about 250 people and very nice high chairs for the players.

We played the whole thing on Gold Crowns that played great all week. Absolutely no complaints from the players. And what a field we had, nearly all the top American players (minus Shane) were there. We shut it off at 64 on Wednesday night.

Nice crowds all week, maybe 200+ people on Friday and Saturday nights. The Phoenix pool community was very active in their support of this event. And a good crowd for the most part, quiet when they needed to be and generous with their applause when good shots were made. Only Bunny The Rogue and one other local got a little loud, and we handled that just fine.

Bull and I made it abundantly clear at the player's meeting that unsportsmanlike conduct would not be tolerated. Yes, I was thinking of Earl and his outbursts. I was not about to allow anything like that to mar this event. And it didn't. Earl was on his best behavior and he actually played quite well. We had one occasion to intercede on the first day and that was the only time I said anything to Earl. I think he knew where to draw the line with me. We may not be the best of friends anymore, but we do have mutual respect for each other.

I was most impressed with Oscar Dominguez. He has arrived as a top level player. He belongs in fields like this. The man can play! And Johnny looked like his old self; lean, mean and hungry to win. When he gets that distant look in his eye and totally focuses on the table/game, he is TOUGH to beat. After all, he is only the ELEVEN TIME Player Of The Year! And he'd like to make it twelve!

No accident that Mike Davis keeps finishing high in major tournaments. He has a big stroke, and can come with shot after shot. Nothing shakes him and he is always in the match. Charley Bryant just wears his opponents down. He is very methodical and analyzes everything on each shot. Maybe to his detriment sometimes. When I asked him to speed up his play, he actually played better (and won).

Mika is just Mika, a GREAT pool player. Probably Johnny's toughest opponent. I love watching Mika play, so solid and confident. I suspected by the second day that it would be these two in the end. They played the best all week. And what a tough draw Mika had: First Efren (9-7), then Earl (9-6), Parica (9-4), a very straight shooting Rob Saez (9-8), John Schmidt (9-6) and finally Johnny for the hot seat (9-8). Mika may have been worn out by the time he faced Johnny again.

I got very little sleep all week, so I have to catch up today. I have a feeling when I pass out later, I'll be out of it for 10-12 hours.

After my match with Scott Frost, I had to play Cory Deuel. During my match with Cory, Pots came up to my wife, who was sitting in the corner of the bleachers by herself trying to watch my match, and sat right next to her. The bleachers on that side were almost empty and, of course, he chooses to sit right next to her.

He pulled all of his tricks out and tried to give her a rose (but I guess the water squirt thing didn't work), gave her a candy, bragged about how he used to back Jose Parica, and proceeded to comment on my match with Cory. She basically said he was harmless enough, but she was peeved that he had to come over and talk to her right while I was playing a former U.S. Open Champion. Annoying to say the least. I felt bad for her and wished I could have done something, but I wasn't even sure what.

I'm kind of with the general consensus, he is probably more annoying than amusing. He kept saying that the spectators were bored watching pool and that things needed to be "livened up". Neither my wife, or I, were amused. But what are you supposed to do in a situation like that? My wife is a very polite, cordial person and of course she just sat there and tried to accomodate this old man while trying to catch as much of my match as possible. Afterwards, I was a little disgruntled that she had to go through that.

On a better note, the tournament was wonderfully run by Jay Helfert, Bull, and Kristi Orgeta. Things ran smoothly and never seemed to be behind schedule. All the tables were in good shape and there was plenty of spectator space on the bleachers. What Kolby's did was fantastic, and on such short notice... they really do deserve kudos for everything they did. And while things may have not worked out at the Sheraton, I think that this venue actually worked out for the better (with the exception of playing on Diamond tables). And lastly, I don't know if Chuck Bobbit (the promoter of this event) came out ahead or not, but either way, it was a wonderful event and I thank you for putting forth the effort to make this happen.

And, a big thanks to Carlos (back2good1), for all the live updates.

Ray I sweated your game with Scott. Great game man, there will always be something as you know that is not just quite right. This field was tough and although Scott is not a name like Parica, Archer Morris etc, he can play and with the field that was there if you were not on your stoke it would be tough. I am going to post a thread in little while asking people like yourself and the spectators what they think and point out a few things that I believe to be our future. I would love your opinion on my thoughts.

Ray

Considering he is very much a part time player and was in with the biggest sharks in the game, Ray (Robles) played great. He was "in" every match and battled head to head with some real champions. No telling how good he could play if he just gave up his day job. :)

I saw Bunny Rogoff play some pretty nifty one-handed jack-up 9-ball in the 70,s at the Stardust Open.

You people take it easy on Pots & Pans:
Dude's been into pool for like 70 years! Cut him some slack!!

Some people need to be told you don't care to converse...

(Edit- Great event coverage! yes, I read it all.)

He can be funny as hell..

I was sitting next to Dennis Hatch's G/F when he came and sat next to us...he started with the one liners right off

He rubbed her pants (blue jeans) and asked her "Can that be denim?" she replied yes. Then he rubbed her belt, and asked "can that be leather?" she replied, yes.

Then he pointed to her shirt (chest) then asked can that be felt?"

We both almost fell out.....

Great, I can see it now! You getting slapped by some lady at the Splash Bar in the Riviera. Maybe we should take an alternate to Vegas in case you end up being escorted off of the property by Louie. :)

Ok where is this place exactly again??????? :)

Don't get used to live updates!

I just want to thank everyone for the positive feedback on the updates. It took a lot more effort than I thought it would, especially since my laptop battery kept going dry and I would have to get power in the back of the room. I didn't realize how many people were following along until I got all the PM's!

Thanks for all the rep too.

-Carlos

I can attest to that Carlos. I only filled in for a few hours each day and that was plenty for me. And I was doing a bunch of it from my cellphone. Thanks for the Rep and kind words. We tried our best to keep you guys in the game(s).

It was great meeting you Carlos, we'll have to get together and play some soon.
