Old guys at the poolroom

I used to spend a lot of time in the late 80's in a pool room frequented by Norman Hitchcock - an "old guy" for sure. Norman never said much, but took a LOT of young bucks down a notch or two. I really liked watching him play! I wasn't real smart, but watching him hit balls for 30 seconds was enough to know I wasn't, nor ever would be, in his class.

Sure miss him!

Really? That's quite interesting.

he was an interesting guy to say the least. i loved that quiet and dry sense of humor.

Every pool room has them.
How many balls lower than they say their game was do you think it actually was.
In my mind, I played about about 2 balls better than reality.

I have always said exaggeration has improved my game more than anything else.

At 69 I guess I would be an "Old Guy." But I gotta tell ya, I feel like a young guy in my head. The body just got older.

To tell if someone is "old" look at their eyes. If you see young eyes in an old head, he ain't old.

Joe..along these lines-a recent comment in a thread about Efren playing rotation against the ghost--paraphrasing...'when Efren is on the table-he is young'.

...sure is for an almost 'old guy'.

As a legit old guy...I can't help but notice.

ps: Joe-woul Jack be the one that had impeccable timing .....'wellllll', or 'Oh, stop that' to Rochester?

I fell in love with pool while playing with "the old guys" at the local American Legion. I was 10 years old and these guys were all retirees.

To this day I enjoy playing the most when I play with the old guys in the partners nine ball ring game. I am an "A" player and most of the time I play it is with concentrated effort and with very few words spoken. So, I really enjoy it when I can let my guard down and just enjoy hanging out and not worry about the outcome of the game. Some are young at heart...maybe I am old at heart.

beautiful tale...thanks for sharing.
we actually have two older men in out poolhall.
The older one, at the age of 82, comes twice a week to shoot some balls and to get his share of our weekly guided pratice session that we set up a year ago. This man still shouts and argues with himself when the Balls don't do what he wants them to do.
He once told me that shooting pool keeps him mentally fresh and physically healthy (with respect to his age). On some occasions you can see him playing with one of our youngest, aged 17. Iimagine, two men with more than two generations between them, having fun thgether on the same subject. Thats what I love wiht our sport.

The other one, aged 78, comes with his grilfriend, sometimes accompanied with another couple, to play, talk and have fun.

Beeing 56 myself, I love those scenes, they make me hope that I could do it too. I'm still looking for my alltime highrun in straightpool.

Hitch fell off a little bit in his last few years but still could have taken on just about anybody shooting below pro caliber.
He had a shark move where if he was losing a set...he would go put his glasses on. The thing was...his glasses didn't have any lenses.
And sure enough he would catch another gear. LoL

Sheldon's Cigar Store

Just remember that an old guy has been where you are, but you've never been where he is.

I snuck into Sheldon's Cigar Store (La Crosse, WI), with a fake I.D. in the 1950s.

There were always (though especially in cold weather), a half dozen "old" guys in there watching. Most of them never played. One was a Russian immigrant who spoke not a word of English, but you knew he had been a player by the way he expressed joy at seeing great shots.

The old fella I remember best went by the name of "Lefty". I saw him shoot one shot that he was famous for. He could pocket a "spot shot" from the kitchen and keep the cue ball from touching a rail! Lots of players tried it, but "Lefty" was the only one who had the amazing finesse stroke to pull it off!

Old guys? Old guys?

I'm an "Old Guys"! 2 balls better? What the heck is that. Us old guys figure in racks. You know like in the real game of pool, Straight pool. Not some carnival game like nine ball.

Us old guys don't associate pool with nine ball. That's for you "New Guys".

Two balls .... geez .. the set of balls comes with 15 object balls. Try using em all, ya damned whipper snapper! :nanner:

I'd laugh out loud but I just got up;)

And another thing. You may be too old to cut the mustard, but you can still lick the lid (a reference to wisdom and experience and not what was going through your mind). :)

I meant it like 10 to 8 in 1 hole.
