Greetings,

Yesterday I purchased a 3" x 16.50" solid rod of Old Micarta from Stew Mortensenan an 83 year old master cue maker who started his career with Bert Schrager in the early 1960s and recently retired from Schuler Cue. I have known Stew for many years and he has owned this rod since 1966. Over the past 5 years he has been a mentor to me helping me transition from a cue repair guy to a cue maker.

On my first post I referred to this as White Micarta because that is what Stew called it. It should be listed as Old Micarta. I had breakfast with Stew yesterday and he gave me the low down. Micarta is white when manufactured. Over the years the material turns color due to oxidation and uv influence. Stew has stored this unit in plastic wrap in a black satin bag and it still turned an ivory / yellow beige color.

Any questions to my email: scdiveteam@aol.com

Very truly yours,

Richard Geschrey

I sent you an email but I'm interested in purchasing some of it no matter how you sell it.

how much for the whole thing?

Richard, how much for the whole thing? I would think it would make a great butt plate or replacement for mid-section of the cue as a substitute to ivory?

I would not trim in down just for ferrule replacement only. IMO

He sold me a ferrule he cut as this piece was longer at one time. I put it on my cue replacing an Ivory Ferrule and I could not believe the soft and quiet effect it had on my stroke. I am a mediocre player and I was shocked at the difference in the feel. It did not make me a better pool player but I have a lot of experience as I own a 11,000 sq. ft. pool hall. I have seen and listened to many great players who have passed through my doors.

At any rate here are some pictures of the raw material from the 1960s. My plan is to sell enough 1" or 3/4" x .540 units to pay for my investment, then I plan to use this material for all of the ferrules and threaded shaft inserts on the custom cues I am building.

I am new to AZBILLIADS and I will be selling this units on ebay for "buy it now" pricing as they seem to have better security than AZ according to some of the posts I have read. I will also be offering 1 piece buying opportunities to anyone who wishes to inspect this material. There will be a money back situation if you are not satisfied for any reason.

As far a the cost goes, I really don't know until I physically cut the unit up ,center drill and face each piece. When I get the end count, I will market a limited amount at a fair price to my fellow cue makers.

The attached pic shows me holding the piece with a white napkin. There is also a pic with Stew holding the Micarta. I will have some cross section detail pics of finished dowels after we router the cut squares on our lathe.

There should be about 188 1" ferrules here but there may be a demand for 3/4" that would increase the yield. Stew told me that the shorter 3/4" ferrule should be a better feel than the 1" I have. He told me that this stuff acts like a shock absorber to the cue's resonance. This ball strike to pool cue resonance coefficient is why this material is so sought after. It is better that Ivory and there has been no other man made material that can compete. You must wear a mask and use a vacuum system when you sand or machine for safety and health reasons.

I know Rick personally, and you couldn't ask for a more honest man to do business with, and Stew can be found in the Blue Book of Cues (3rd ed I believe.)

Rick, Laurie Franklin may even be interested in some. You can contact her at swcue@aol.com, or (702)870-9615.

Good luck with your sale.
