I knew Micarta was hot but not how hot! Be interesting to see how this goes.

I'm curious

I know it's valuble & not made anymore but what was it's main use?Would there be any of it,say in a GM plant that is folding? If so I might know how to access some.

If I Only

There are lots of different Micarta products out there. The one that folks are looking for to use on the pool cues is the old yellow micarta which was made with asbestos. Please keep in mind that mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer, is linked to the breathing in of these asbestos fibers..no joke. Anyways, be very careful when cutting/finishing it.

Micarta has been on the market for many years in rod, tube, bar, and sheet in several colors. There are quite a few suppliers in the US alone.
Its quite easy to buy.

You are speaking of linen or canvas based Micarta. It tends to turn yellow with age. No -they did not "stop making it in the 80's" It's still used as an insulator today. Thousands of pounds are sold daily in dozens of comercial grades. There are 15-20 companys that will sell you that material right now in tube, bar or sheet. There are several grades available under the trade name "Micarta."

NEMA grades of Micarta:

Just do a Google search on "Micarta rod." I don't know wnat exact grade you need/want. But trust me it's widely available and its pretty cheap.
Just because somone is offering you a small piece of Micarta for $100 has no bearing on the fact that you could choose to purchase is from one of 20 industrial suppliers for about 25 cents or less.
I think that "Micarta" was originally a trade name for Westinghouse or Dupont. It's widely available and its cheap.
