My wife brought me cup of coffee and I was running the lathe,
it startled me and as i jerked stuck my little finger into the chuck.
My little finger looks like hell.
I ask her to knock on the door or flip the light switch on and off but she forgets.
Now everthing I do I make sure i bump my finger doing it because I really like being in pain.:speechless:

I have always been jumpy . thinking of a door bell.
what have you guys come up with.

i wonder if putting a bell on the door like at a store will help save your fingers:thumbup:

...................

I was on the table saw when a customer walked up and startled me. I lock the door now.

I have a light switch outside the shop door and a light with a red tinted lightbulb hooked up to it. Sign outside the door that says "If you hear machinery running, please flip the switch and wait." I'm new at all this so I didn't lose a masterpiece by any means...but was still pretty upset when I jumped a mile and dug a huge groove into a butt I was working on when startled by someone.

Mike,

I am like you and I have to think about something... My wife and my 12 year old scare the crap out of me all the time... Nothing serious happened... yet...

or... build a moat

#1 remodel the shop so the door is always in view.
#2 remodel the door.
#3 alarm mat and have it connected to a lamp.
#4 motion sensor.

i dont let anyone in my shop unless i bring them in with me, i usually lock the door after i go in and make people knock.

No one can sneak up, thanks to 3 dogs. 222LB Saint Bernard. Black Lab and the killer Jack Russel mix lol

I think the red light (or Blue or orange) is a great idea. It is very easy to hook it up to a push button switch "door bell STYLE". And depending on your shop set-up you can mount one several in different locations... it works. Or just learn to jump away from your work??

close call

I've had a few little mishaps but never to blame from someone elses distractions.
If I was that jumpy or distracted, I would probably not do a light or alarm either. I think I also would just lock the door. Tell everyone to text and you can get back to them on your time. Maybe you could give up coffee but I don't think that would totally fix your issue. Lol

I think that you can get an alarm really cheap. My parents have one that when you break the beam it dings. That way they can hear when people come down the drive.

Even if you have all 10 fingers intact, you can use them to count the number of cuemakers that have lost part or ALL of a finger or chunk of another body part because of something along these lines.

Years ago, there was a story here I believe of someone coming into a cuemaker's shop, coming up behind him,and causing a distraction.

The distraction led directly to the cuemaker feeding his hand into his router during a tapering pass.

Lathe chucks have NO conscience. Even the Hightower can mess your hand up. Tommy D.

I wasnt trying to blame my wife , But you are 100% right it is not my wifes fault.... yes i am very jumpy ,
it is a safety problem that I think that can be cured with warning lights.
and possible moving a few things around where i dont have my back to the door. I am only jumpy when i cant see and hear the person .
This is really my fault it is common sense that this could be a safety issue.

I live alone and I work in my shop pretty late, and one night shortly after I started working in my shop, which is one bay of my detatched 3 car garage, I was running my south bend metal lathe and all of the sudden my door started creeping open. My natural instinct was to grab my pistol, chamber it and aim. I think my friend shit himself when he looked up and saw the business end of my Springfield Armory looking him right in the eye. I dropped it, cleared it, and then proceeded to have a near heart attack, lol. I still have my pistol with me, but I don't pull it on people who come in the shop now, lol.

You can get door alarms pretty cheaply at Home Depot, Ace, Wal Mart etc.
I have been using one for years. As I recall, they were two in a pack for like 5.00. Takes maybe 5 minutes to install. Has two different noise settings.

How about a simple sign?

When the weather is nice i like to roll the door open. locking the door will only work during the winter.
Lights and bells will work thank you

I'd never hear it, I wear ear protection when running the router/lathe/dust collection, etc ... hence my light set up.
