Have any AZ'ers tried the European PAT Tests? I have tried the PAT1 with a best score of 1066. I am going to try PAT2, which is brutal, soon. I would like to hear others opinions of this training tool. I personally think it is great as it provides a goal and keeps you focused while practicing.

I will take the PAT-1 test in a week or two. I don't know exactly how it goes yet, but I understand it lasts about 3 hours.

I'd be interested to know your impressions on the test if you care to detail your experience :)

I've just tried some of the shots...

Again and again and again.

Are you guys self administering the tests?

It might be a cool thing to do.

PAT Test

Yes I self administer the tests. It does take about 3 hours. You really need the DVD's and the instruction booklets to properly understand and take the tests. I am surprised it has not taken hold in the US. If you look at the official PAT website http://www.pat-billiard.com/PATRanking.aspx you can see Thorsten, Ralf, Jasmin, Line and a lot of top European's scores.

edit: nevermind. Its a problem with the pat-billiard site.

Hello,

I have the Pat 1 Book and DVD but unfortunately I find myself only running some of the drills randomly. I need my own table to properly score the entire test.

with a score of 1066 youd thats the second highest official score in north america.....acorrding to their website.

Score

I administered the test myself as a lot of people do so it isn't official but I was honest when I scored myself. I scored over 1,000 three times in a ten attempts. By the way my friend Liz Ford scored an 1138 on a double shimmed table a few days ago on her first attempt (Self Administered). Here is the link if anyone is interested in ordering the DVD's and Booklets:

Does anyone have a link describing what these tests involve?
There are exercises (tests) for each of 10 types of skills or shots. For PAT 1, the types are Speed, Straightness, Follow, Draw, Small Position, Large Position, Frozen Cushion, Continuous Drill, Standard Balls, and Game Situations. Each exercise has a score that depends on how well you do it, according to balls missed or cue ball position missed. The maximum score possible is 1549, but 800 is considered passing (and time to move to PAT 2).

For the speed drill in PAT 1, no object ball is involved, and the goal is to leave the cue ball within two diamonds of an end rail after 0, 1, 2 or 3 end cushion contacts, shooting straight up and down the table. The exercises get a lot harder from there.;)

Is Level 1 strickly for beginners or is it one everyone should start with?

Thanks

PAT is a very well worked out system. For me it's a love/hate thing with it. I randomly play parts of the test, but as I picked this game up to late (aged 21) I don't have the will to do it like you should practicing your stance etc over and over again. That's why my stats (see signature) are stalled at this level for the last 1,5 years.
Just yesterday I lost too many matches in a round robin format to finish in the money. Ok, it was sudden death format, but I lost because I jerked up or had the wrong stance. All flaws I would not have if I had done PAT right
I won 6 of 13 matches, but only 3 of my lost matches were break and runs of my opponent. The others were easy to win, but well...

BUT, the most important thing about PAT is to have a qualified coach observing your practice. Form the people I play with there are numerous players were I didn't have to aim properly but still won the matches a year ago. Now they practiced PAT real hard with a professional coach and run racks against me and all I can do is to rely on my experience and out-master them with tricky pushouts and safety play. I don't stand a chance in an open battle against them

PAT showed me that I am a pool numbnut

I would like to purchase all three levels from anyone who is willing to part with this. I dont care if the notebooks are written in or used. Someone quote me a price.

Suggestion

You really need both the booklets and the DVD's. It would be difficult understanding the booklets and how to self administer the tests without the DVD's. Thorsten Hohmann demonstrates each phase of the 10 tests on the DVD's.

Hope this helps

Level 1 is fairly easy; intermediate or advanced players will easily pass it with no preparation. It will however give the player the whole "idea" of the PAT tests; as all 3 are very similar shots and setups; just increasing in degree of difficulty.

I think even professional players can benefit by starting with PAT2. I have administered it to several pro's; all enjoyed the experience and the challenge.

As WBM said, good players should expect to get very high scores on PAT1. It won't be much of a challenge to pass unless you set the desired score extra high.

FWIW, I think someone has posted some of the DVD info on YouTube.

I bought all three booklets and they are worth every single cent.

There are actually 4 books now. They added a START level. I think they felt the level one was too hard for some beginners.
I believe Randyg is a certified PAT instructor. He could not only give the test, but he would be an excellent choice to help you in areas you might need help,
