There are exercises (tests) for each of 10 types of skills or shots. For PAT 1, the types are Speed, Straightness, Follow, Draw, Small Position, Large Position, Frozen Cushion, Continuous Drill, Standard Balls, and Game Situations. Each exercise has a score that depends on how well you do it, according to balls missed or cue ball position missed. The maximum score possible is 1549, but 800 is considered passing (and time to move to PAT 2).
For the speed drill in PAT 1, no object ball is involved, and the goal is to leave the cue ball within two diamonds of an end rail after 0, 1, 2 or 3 end cushion contacts, shooting straight up and down the table. The exercises get a lot harder from there.
