And how did anyone remember Don McCoy?

Hey, Don's not that old....and he still lives....and plays occasionally.

If you're on I-80, his bar and grill is right off that on Hwy 141. He's cooking more than playing but still has two barboxes and one 9 ft at his place.

Almost everything I know about pool came from watching Don practice and play. I should've watched more!

Remember Don from early seventies, saw him beat alot of real good players both in tournies and for the cash. Real standup player. He used to run with Paul Baker, whatever happened to him? Use to love playing Paul, he was about my speed, but it was tough to pull a dollar out of him.

Paul was a good little roadman with his pool and golf hustles.

"Highway" Paul is still around and playing. I have two stories about him.

The funny story: One day Paul was playing a friend of mine and was getting the best of it. My friend spouted "You are so lucky" after Paul got yet another good roll...to which Paul said "Yeah, I'm lucky...lucky to be playing you!". The room roared.

The not-funny story: I was playing Paul in an 8B tourney about 4-5 years ago, he was on the hill, and hooked himself on the case 8. He walked around the table, measured the rail-first hit, and placed the chalk where he needed to hit the rail. I waited for him to shoot and called a foul for using the chalk as an aiming aid.

The female TD came over and said that it was a good shot and I should have either called her over before the shot occured or called the foul before the shot took place.

I was floored that she expected me to call a foul before it had occured or I should call her over any time there is a potential for a foul (for example: if my opponent scratches but I didn't anticipate it...and call it a foul before he shot...is it not a foul?).

Two things. I'm surprised that Paul would make such a blatant foul and the TD made a very bad call. But, it happens!

If you see Paul, tell him I said Hi. It's been years!

George is hitting em pretty good & wins his share of the monthly tournaments up here. Put me in the losers bracket at the monthly one pocket at Ca Billiard Club in Mountain View last Saturday. I will have to give him a little steam about the hairdo in the pic. John

The first guy in the front row is Dick Weaver. The next guy is a young David Matlock, I'm almost certain.

Can you recognize any of these birds?

The guy in the Bush Shirt is the one Only Louie St. Louis Louie Roberts ( Nick Name Elvis) He was a great guy, and my mentor during the mid-1970's, and he was one of the great natural tallents at the game of Nine Ball. Louie was also one of the best players from St. Louis in the last fifty years. Louie was also involved with Larry Hubert and Terry Bell as a representative and founder of the Bush League and the early APA.

Paul's still around...mostly at the Prarie Meadows casino on the east side of town playing poker. He's still hard to pull a dollar out of..lol

Paul always had some new technique he was working on...mostly to shark his opponents, I think. I remember about 15 years ago he ruined my game for about 3 weeks when he described how he enters into the shot stance from one side or the other, depending on dominant eye, if memory serves me correct. Brain science. But he could shoot, for sure....you must be pretty good yourself then.

I have an Accu-Stats tape of Don McCoy playing Mike Massey at the Williard's tournament in Lake Charles, IL from 1991.

Don plays great in the match but loses on the hill 11-10.

Sorry Bill, That is not Steve Gumphrey.

Phyllis Gumphrey

Phyllis, where have you been, girl? You are absolutely correct. It is not Steve. I know the guy but can not think of his name. I had Steve on my mind at the time because he was at so many of those things.

My computer crashed and I lost all my contacts so please send me an email so I can put you back in my book. Hope all is well with you and yours.
