I thought I'd post a few pictures from the early matches at the Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament at Hollywood Billiards.

I'm going back after dinner and I'll post more but thought I'd get a few up now.

I think there are almost 200 players so I had no chance to get them all and it was so crowded moving around was tough.

Jay Helfert is doing a great job as always....anyway, here's a few, I'll leave the captioning to you guys for now:

Real nice photos, thanks. Your wide angle lens makes the room look huge!

I have to display my ignorance and ask why there was someone dressed as Charlie Chaplin there?

Also who were those two kids playing? And how is that possible when Hollywood Billiards has a bar, do they have to keep it closed during the tournament?

I dunno what he was doin' there, although I caught him napping later in the evening.

Those kids were in the tourney, one is still in and in the money! He lost but won I think THREE matches in the losers bracket...he's 14 and can really play...was like lookin' into the future!

As for the bar, it appears it's ok...I think since they serve food it's legal for the kids to be there. I don't think they regularly allow it, but it appears to be legal. I know Jeff wouldn't risk his license for anything.

Bunny Rogoff - infamous old time hustler and originator of the Pots n' Pans scam.

Thanks Junksecret for the excellent photography. I managed to stay on the winners side today...the stars lined up.
See you tomorrow.

Congrats!!!

I was barely able to sneak a shot of you...was pretty crowded in there and tough to move around. Hopefully you'll make the final rounds when it's fewer tables and matches......:)

Good luck tomorrow.

Cya,

Joe

Pool is alive and well in SoCal! We had 192 entries and had to shut the field off. We could have easily had 20-25 more. The first day's matches are ending about right now. I had to take a break. The final 64 players (all in the money) come back tomorrow. First prize is $2,500 (entry fee $65-70).

Some damn good players came out here for this one. Rafael, Justin Bergman, Scott Frost, Louie Ulrich, Mitch Ellerman, Parica, Morro, Ernesto & Oscar, Sal Butera and all the way from the great Northwest Rich Geiler and Stan Tourangeau. Ron Rosas returned to the tournament scene for the first time in over ten years. You can see him in the background of one of the photos. He used to be the best 9-Ball player in SoCal.

I have great guys helping me out, Bill Stock and Mark Estes. I wish I had such competent help at all my tournaments. I can actually take a break and not have to worry. Another long day tomorrow. It's a feat to play 192 players in two days, but we WILL do it! I'm going to get some rest.

Met a bunch of Az'ers yesterday. Thanks for coming up and saying hi to me. Sorry I didn't have much time to chat. junksecret is the man with his cool photos.

What a tournament. Jay does an amazing job and Jeff Bey has the nicest pool hall in LA. Some great matches today.
