Had an opportunity to take my newly acquired Gus out for a REAL test drive. It did not disappoint .. I didn't have to adjust in any way. Played some 9 ball for 3 hours and I even broke with it every rack!:shocked2:... Hit/broke REAL good..Of course.. Nice :yeah:

Glad to hear you're enjoying the cue. I have nothing but good memories about Gus. He was a good hard working man and great cuemaker. Maybe more than any other cuemaker, he set higher precise standards for build quality.

It's a great cue, and I'm sure that Gus Szamboti himself would say his cues were made to break with, but with all the cues out there made for breaking I would use something else.
With that said, I would love to have the opportunity to break with your Gus...

What tips are on it?

Gus made great pool cues. Assuming your experience will be like mine, as you keep playing with the cue, you'll become even more attached to it.

Maybe so, but I have been told by MANY famous cuemakers, "If you can't break with my cue(s), they're not worth squat!" I have always held that same opinion. If you know how to break correctly, you cannot damage a cue. You may or may not experience some tip flattening. I agree that there are some great break cues out there these days.

Mike Lambros told me the same thing about his cues. His comment was a cue should feel the same on every hit from break speed to slow rolling the ball, if it does not there is something wrong in the construction of the cue.

Glad to hear your playing with your Gus, that's what they were made for!

Sure it's a lot nicer than the "Russ" I posted about a while back! Lol
Good luck with it!

I dont avoid breaking with my playing cue to avoid davmaging my cue, i do it to avoid flattening out my tip. plus i do get a little extra pop with my break cue if needed

I really didnt want to watch over another cue though I have another I use for breaking and also wanted to put the cue through its paces which it was originally intended for..I have no worries with the Gus. It's tight and right .... I believe Barry put some of Gus's triangle tips on. They played great with no issues and for me who uses a lot of spin thats a great thing.

Discuss the plus about Gus

I have a plain four-point Gus... IMO in theory you should be able to break with it, but with today's 9 and ten ball breaks? Nah, not with 'Ivy' ferrules... a $100 jump/break will do just fine, save the Gus for the real work... if you crack a ferrule, that's it.. it's not original after you repair it. My 50 cents..(adjusted for inflation)

Players broke with ivory ferruled cues for decades with nary an issue. In fact the cue ball seems to jump nicely off a cue with that type ferrule. I wasn't worried about it. Gus built it. That said I am having another shaft made that will copy every aspect of the one of the originals I played with.

Gus

I have owned over the years 3 Gus Szamboti cues and all 3 played excellent even the one that was a 59 in.

Good luck with your new cue !

i played one pocket with Gus the cue maker in Toms River N.J. back in the '80s.
But I was playing with a Schon.
does that count also?

I’ve had several cues with ivory ferrules and I’ve never been afraid to break with them. Granted, I probably average less than 20mph breaks but I think it’s fine as long as you don’t do anything stupid.

I break with my Gus with no concerns. I don't own a break cue - I am bad enough that I like the perceived help of not switching cues during a game.
