A while back, I did the Classiest Player thread. In honor of the DVD to be soon released about Danny D. I thought we talk about players who had the most character. Those who wolf, tell stories and are generally fan favorites.

My vote is a two way tie between Danny D and Keith McCready.

Have fun and Merry Christmas!!

Jim

Edit - Man I really need to learn how to spell....

Not sure about Earl's mental state, but boy is he a character :D !!!

I've met Vivian Villareal a couple of times and wasn't very impressed. She had won a tournement and was more interested in doing shots of tequila with her "friend" than anything else. She seems do alot of stuff for the camera. At least that's the impression I get. It seems she holds a grudge against men too.

I love Jeanette Lee. She really is an ambassador.

Off subject, but Vivian is a GREAT person, with enormous depth of character. If you knew her, you would never utter a bad word about her. She truly loves people and has a soft and kind soul. And she is a fierce competitor at the same time, on the table only.

I'm just telling you the impression I got when I've talked to her. I'm not trying to start a war, but my impression is just that, my impression. I wasn't trying to slam her character. I know she's a good person, she adopted that little girl, who was taken from her and was found with her mother in Mexico. I know she's been through alot. Maybe I was a little harsh in my previous post, she really is a good person.

Pool's present day character's has to begin with Alex. What a joyful spirit he brings to the game.

Louie and Keith, and Ronnie for that matter, were all American originals. Louie had more charisma than any human being I ever knew. You couldn't take your eyes off him. His personality was electric.

But please, let us not forget the Fat man. He was BY FAR the biggest celebrity to ever wield a cue. No one today even holds a candle to his fame. And, best of all, he never had to make a ball. Hows that for being the most famous poolplayer who ever lived.

Our very own Rudolf Wanderone showed the possibilities when one is blessed with the gift of gab. An uneducated rounder, who lived to gamble, he became as famous in his life as Mickey Mantle or Muhammed Ali. All because he was a bigger than life character. 24/7 Fats was on stage, talking and entertaining all in his midst. We will not see his like again.

Vivian is really cool. She has done a lot for pool. I for one am very glad to see her having a nice sponsorship now so she can enjoy herself and play pool.

I do not know most of the older players, to me, the man I like to watch the most is Efren. He has a lot of character in his own unique way. :)

I also like Larry Nevel and Charlie Bryant.

There is this very young kid from Japan, Hijikata, he has a baby face, is very skinny, but he plays a smooth game of pool, with a hugh break. He loves matching up, and plays with lots of heart. I think we should see more of him in the near future.

this is so true Jay.. i will always treasure seeing Minnesota Fats at a seminar about in 1963....said he just came from the Arctic..that the Eskimos couldn't find him a pool table so they cleared some ice off the lake and drilled 6 holes for pockets and played pool for hours !!!!!!! said the only reason he stopped playing was that he forgot his winter coat back home and that it was gettin cold in a short sleeve shirt...... LOL

The Lion

I was in Dayton just a few days ago and was told a story about how much of a character Alex was. I don't know if it is true or not but maybe someone could verify this.

Several years ago at DCC I think, Alex was talking about how good looking he was and to prove it he disappeared to his room and came back with a dress on. All that to gain a few laughs in front of such a huge crowd. That takes alot of brass!!! But only shows how much he loves the crowd and the ability to work anyone who will watch.

This thread is like the scene in Color of Money were Eddie,Vincent and His girlfriend were eating dinner and Eddie says to Vincent's girlfriend "Vincent is a real character" and she replys " yeah he has a lot of character. Eddie quickly clarifies that Vincent was a character, not that he has character.

I believe this thread is, who has the most character, not who is the biggest character.

I think Tony Robles,Efren Reyes,Nick Varner,Mike Massey and Rodney Morris are just a few that bring some class to the game.

Actually my intention of this thread is who is the biggest character. We've done a thread on class.
Maybe it should read charisma(good or bad). Sorry for the confusion.

Deceased: Louie Roberts far and away.
Alive: It’s a push, Keith McCready and the guy you all forgot, Scotty Townsend.

Well of course Keith comes to mind, but I feel that the late great Miz also had tremendous character. His character helped put the sport of pool on TV and gain some of the notorioty that it has today. JMO

In that case...... Rodney Morris makes this list also and Earl Strickland,Charlie Bryant are good choices. I also agree Alex Pagulyan is fun to watch.

Actually, I think Nick Van den Berg is really cool to watch. He is very aggressive, with a big heart. I remember watching him in the World Pool Championship, coming to the table at hill hill, when the guy left him safe, (cue ball on one bottom rail, 8 ball on the other.) The whole arena was full, lots of fans wearing orange shirts and hats cheering him on. He took one look, got down, banked the 8 in full table, shape on the 9, sank it, shaked the guy's hand as if it was nothing.:)

A very polite and classy guy in person, but a great player with lots of confidence at the table.

Ralf Souquet is also really cool. He is like a machine, with so much control with his cue ball and his emotion. He reminds me of an artist who seeks perfection in every stroke he paints.
