Hi all

This is one of my daily players. Barry made this for me in 2006. All classic fare, abalone dots, notched diamonds and barbells, teal/maple stitch ring work. Just the kind of thing I go for. Its a stunning cue (both constructionally and visually) and thats not all........

Look at the butt sleeve. Check out the dings and scratches. If you use an item every week, there is a good chance its going to get knocked a bit from time to time. Look at the used shafts. Blue chalk will stain shafts but you need chalk if you are going to play pool. I don't mistreat the cue in anyway, this is normal wear and tear from constant use. This cue plays as good as any cue I have ever used and it is better than most.

What I am trying to say is, we sometimes lose sight of what these beautiful creations are made for. Yes, they are expensive. Yes, they are highly desirable and therefore collectable. With that in mind, some people fear that their investment will de-value if they play with it or that it could get stolen from their local club. Well, I look at it like this....I could get knocked down tomorrow. At least I got to use my Szamboti in my lifetime. I posted something similar a while back about one of my Gus Szamboti cues. I felt it needed reiterating.

Don't forget, cues are tools that need to be USED. Its a crime against nature (your cue was once part of a tree) to simply lock them up forever and show them at parties.

The greatest compliment you can give a cue maker is to tell him you are using his cue.

Have a good weekend

Si
PS: I show my cues at parties too:)

Hello Simon,

I believe it is un-natural to use a collectable cue, I believe that when one buys a Szamboti,Searing,Showman,Manzino etc....these cues should just be coveted and adored and viewed strictly in awe (and in private)......

It's guys like you that give cue collectors a bad image. I cannot imagine taking a super nice cue like this and hit balls. I mean Simon what is going through your mind???? Is it the voice's the quiet whispers in your mind??

I am sure in merry ole England there are counseling centers to address this particular issue.

My heart goes out to you and if there is anything I can do....please feel free to ask.

Very concerned,

Scott

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will reply to everyone else when I pick myself up off the floor. Nice one Scott. I suppose some of us USE the cues better than others:) You won't be needing that fancy cue you made in Dennis' shop then? Send it to Blighty and I will make proper use of it.

I think maybe he got sunstroke while riding that camel.......

I agree with using the cue, If I had it I would. Plus, even with the minor dings, it still looks great!

As one of my last few official postings on here until the fall...I will say that Si, you're absolutely right.

I also think that HIRUN has a pretty sharp sense of humor. :D

Now that I have my Searing cue, I cannot imagine NOT playing with it. All of the talks with Dennis make perfect sense to me...and all of them have entailed discussion regarding the fact that he (and many, many others) build cues which are intended for the table...not the display case. My cue was built to be played with...and I'll play the HELL right out of it. I've tried to get all the misses out of it early, too!! :)

Having a Szamboti like yours is a real treat, I would imagine...being able to actually PLAY with it makes it all the better.

You're not showing off a 90% ivory and scrimshaw show cue...you're showing off a thoroughbred player. Regardless of who made it, it was made to play. The fact that it's a Szam just adds to the WOW factor.

I haven't owned very many "high end" cues...but every cue I've ever owned, I bought to play with (for a week, a month, a year....okay, maybe a year is a bit of a stretch ;) ). This includes the "high end" ones.

Enjoy the cue, Si. I know you will continue to!

Best regards,

Mark
