Playing for 1 week.

I am going to try 14.1 for a week and see what I can run. I don't play and will start with a break ball. I don't know any rules so I will play like snooker/8ball, all fouls and call pocket.

I would like to get 5+ racks.

I will see if this game will help with other games. Many seem to say it improves skill level, time to check.

well that is a minimum 70 ball run, its quite a feat. please don't think i'm trying to knock you or anything.

i think, for me at least, straight helped me learn to problem solve with my brain and not my arm. i think you just learn to read a layout so well from putting time and effort into 14.1.

I would certainly say it gives a different perspective when looking at a 9ball rack after you've been in "straight pool stroke" for a while. its kinda like turning a chessboard sideways i guess, you just kinda think "oh, never saw that before." (Ha, i don't play chess often FWIW) plus your position routes and margin for error are ALOT bigger in 9ball than 14.1. whats perfectly acceptable in 9ball can be disaster in straight pool.

good luck and keep us posted!
justin.

No 5 racks yet. I missed the 5th ball in the 3rd rack and the break ball to start the 4th. I was leaving the break ball too low hitting the last couple balls. I found the balls break better hitting the top 2. Hoping to get some good runs in the next few days. I probably had 20 racks with groups of 8 or more sticking together around the spot. I tried to play like snooker cleaning up the balls and then going into the pack... I would break the balls out, but have very little to shoot. I started to hit the pack every chance and early, this helped. Also, I am hitting the pack harder. I started with soft breaks trying to avoid balls getting bunched on the rail. Problem was, I didn't have clean lines to pockets.

This game can get you really pissed off.

IF YOU STARTED ONLY A FEW DAYS AGO.......YOU REALLY HAVE NO IDEA HOW FRUSTRATING IT CAN BE.

I thought this game was frustrating in practice. I played someone last night. My goal was to leave a ball close to the rack for breaking. Their goal was to get all the easy balls and leave the hardest shot till the end.

Sounds like you played Hal at World Class Billiards in Peabody MA.

That's the name of his game...

I have to admit that when someone plays like this it is VERY frustrating.

And the worst is in practice when I play that way against myself! :embarrassed2:

the 14 you should have
the 14 he got...

the 28 ball swing...

you were leading 52 to 39 now the score is 52 to 53 instead of 66 to 39, just because you missed the break ball and left a wide open rack

Very frustrating indeed.

Still no 5 racks yet. I am getting to the 3rd rack often, just having problems getting past 4. I think that i could run 100 in a month or less. The racks are getting easier to clear and develope break balls. I might go and see how long it takes for 100 though. How long did it take you guys to run your first 100?

i don't know you but to come out and say you'd like to run 5+racks of 14.1 is like saying i'd like to win the lottery. just about everyone that's ever played 14.1 would like to run 70's.

I am not new to pool, I play a lot of 9 ball, just haven't played straight. Maybe 20 games or so before last week. I don't know rules etc. Playing call pocket and all ball fouls. I am setting up a break ball and having a go. I will get 5 racks. I have already run 3 full racks twice and 2 full a bunch in only 3 days.

Call pocket and all ball fouls are the rules. Starting with a breakball is a standard practice routine as well. Best of luck on your quest. Hard to answer your question on how long it took to run 100 because its relative to skill levels. Most never run 100 in their lifetime.

So your high run is already 42? or more?

if you are a good shooter, and havent playd much straightpool, 2-3 racks should be makeable. but its kindof a long way from 30-40 to 70-80 if your new to the game
so i think you need more than a week.sorry.

but good luck to you:)

whats your status now? 1-2 days left?

In three days I have made 44 twice. I miss the break ball both times. I played too much spin and got stuck on the rail leaving full table length shots. I am starting to understand the pack better and seeing how to bump to develop balls. A friend of mine came over to the house and we played straight again (2 days in a row). in a race to 150, I missed in the 3rd rack twice. The 20' and 30's are coming often.

I have a rules question though. Where does the break ball go when it is left in the rack... and the same question for CB.

I posted on the 17th and didn't start until the 19th. I was working until 9 and 10 every night. I have about 2 1/2 days to go.

I am going to play for 8 hours or more today. I have a lot of expectations for 8 hours of play.

the BB goes on the foot spot..and the CB goes anywhere behind the kitchen line

Do you have to hit the last ball first. Say I leave the 14 for my last ball. Can I hit the pack and then the 14? The guy I played said I couldn't. I had a ball finish close to the rack so I hit the rack first to develop, then the CB hit my break ball.

u dont have to hit the 14 at all..if u wanna just hit the pack u can..playing safe of otherwise..its your option..but u do have to make a legal hit with any ball on the table ..meaning u have to hit a rail after contact..or it is a foul..and a 1 point deduction
