Danny Medina has stage 4 cancer.
I talked with him earlier today and the first time in about 3 months. He was the typical Danny. Upbeat and optomistic. i felt very ashamed as I was very choked up over the news.
He said," Bud, I think I can cure myself and give cancer the 7-8"!
Danny ws for many years a most feared 9 ball player. Few came to Colorado looking to take him off. He had one of the most feared breaks on the planet, even if it could get a bit wild. I witnessed him running 14,12,11,10, and a few 9 packs over the years.
He is very upbeat and optomistic and only asks for prayers. Danny has always been a warrior and a fighter. It's just the way he was built.
Having known Danny for near 40 years, this is one of the saddest days of my life.
Please pray for my friend?
Thanks

Ironman, Thank you for the update. My family and I have known Danny for many many years as a pool player, cue repairman and over the years a great friend.
I haven't seen him in about 5 years. Is he still in the Ft. Collins area? Please let him know the "Cole Family" are praying for him.

I am very sorry to hear this news of your friend. He will certainly be in my prayers.

Very sad news about Danny.
I heard it 10-days ago at Hank's.
We were just getting over Dave Billings, and now this.
Danny had been very lethargic, and I thought something was seriously wrong with him.

I've always liked Danny, he was a great player.
I wish the news was better.

Peace
Ted

I was on a road trip with a couple of my Alaskan Friends back around 1971-72.

After Sacramento (Terry Stonier's Fathers Day event), Las Vegas and Reno, and Salt Lake City, we ended up in Denver, Colorado.

I do remember playing at Family Fun Center - which is still there but had a few different names.

My buddy (John Duclos) ended up matching up with Danny Medina a couple of times. Nothing real big - maybe $100 sets or so.

This was at Jolly Rogers (I have no idea why I always remember that name) and after a couple of hours, we broke event and considered ourselves lucky. I think they played with the big ball - bar box of course.

Danny used to run with this guy who was a sports records guru. He was sponsored (by Coors or Miller I think) and would go around to all the bars and answer ANY question on smajor sports. He was amazing - I mean even knew all the batting averages and everything. Sadly, I heard he took his life a few years later BUT what an interesting guy!

Danny was just starting to catch his gear and I don't think we would have liked it if we played longer or if we had come into town a year or so later. He has been a monster for years. I know he has had some bad times over the last decade or so and I really wish him the best.

Danny, you are in my thoughts.

I was fortunate enough to see Danny play once.(Incredible player)There are two guys that really impressed me with there abilities,Earl Strickland and Danny Medina.Danny had one of the most powerful strokes i have ever seen.

I imagine Danny could give cancer the whole rack.

Feed your faith and your fears will starve to death.
God bless You Danny, will be praying for you.

Gotta love a pool player that says he can give the big C the 7/8.
Danny, we haven't met, but I'm pulling for you.
God bless you

Danny is an old road buddy of mine. We had one especially good trip through the Midwest back in the 80's. Danny didn't book any losers either! We both went home with stuffed pockets. I had visions of taking Danny to England way back when to challenge the snooker champs to some golf on a snooker table. I don't think any of them would have liked it much. Danny was that good. No one shot any straighter than him.

Danny came to visit me out here in the late 80's a couple of times, first winning the Disneyland tournament, beating David Howard in a thrilling final match for 15K! Second time was for a big tourney in Riverside. Danny didn't win, in fact he may have finished 5-6th for only $750. But then he took on Morro Paez, the best golf player around. He went through Morro like a hot knife through butter, winning over 3K in a few hours.

Our next meeting was at the U.S. Bar Table Championships in Reno. I sponsored Danny several times and we always made money. One year he even won the Eight Ball division for 5K, our best score. So Danny and I have been a good team down through the years and always gotten along great.

No one ever broke the balls any harder than Danny or had more heart either. Danny was a lot like Shane is today. When I put him in the box for a tough game and asked him how he felt, he would always respond, "Don't worry, I can beat him." And he did!

I hope I get to see you again soon buddy.

I've never heard the "feed you faith.." statement, I really like that.

I don't know Mr. Medina but wish him well and send up a prayer as well.. I'm a survivor too! Praying for a miracle!

I wish Danny some good rolls and look forward to matching up with him again someday. He has a gear that few have ever shifted to and is amazing to watch when it happens. Best of luck, Mr. D!

Best,
Mike

isn''t there a video of him running 9 racks on David howard at that event? Or was that maybe at the Corner Pocket in Vegas? The years are catching up with me now!

Wow, what a memory! He played great at the old Jolly Roger. In fact I don't remember him taking but one loss there and that was to Craig Stevens when Danny was about 19 or 20.
He moved to the big tables a few years later and really took off after he won the Willards Tournament in Chicago.
I believe the sports trivia guy was Joe Finesilver. He was one of a kind. he was a riot! the last I heard many years ago, he was making the lines at Ceasars in Vegas.

The Three That Got Away!

Lewis, I may have told this story on here before, I don't remember, but it has Danny Medina in it, I'll tell the short version.

Me, Calvin & Jerold Jackson ( Top Water ) had been playing pool over at Cainey City,TX back in 1981 for about six or eight months, Calvin had the action built up in that little town like crazy, players from all over the country were coming around to get a shot at the money that was floating around.

George Hail was backing Calvin against anyone at the time and they were making some good scores, and it was tons of small action for players like myself, and Top Water.

Well on a Wednesday Me ,Calvin,& Top Water decided to go to Odessa,TX. and see Calvin's X-wife and son and play alittle pool too along the way, we got there on a Friday night.

Meanwhile back in Cainey City on that Friday night the Texas Rangers raided the bar that George Hail owned, they took over 30 players to jail for gambling , some were jailed for Inter-State Gambling.

George payed everones bail and he got a big fine and the Rangers confiscated any money that wasn't in a persons bill fold, if it was in your pockets , it was taken!, that was about all that ever came of it, but the Texas Rangers said that the main ones they were after got away!, ...lol..that was me ,Calvin and Top Water!:D

This top player had been busted for drug dealing over in Dallas, but he was from Okla. City and in exchange to have Georges place busted for gambling he got off his drug charges, I won't divulge his name tho, you can ask Top Water his name, he remembers it!

Meanwhile back in Odessa,TX. that night Calvin matched up with Danny Medina on the bar box some 9-Ball sets for $300 a set, Calvin won two sets and Danny quit and said he would play some more the next night.

Calvin left with a "lady of the night" and me and Top Water stayed in the joint and played pool all night, this guy named Jamie came in and laid his black leather coat on a chair, the coat fell off it and a damn gun went off!, it was a 357, the bullet hit the wall about two feet from my head!

I just looked around and went back to playing pool, this Jamie charactor was bad news, he had just got out of the joint only days before, so no one said anything to him.

The next night Calvin and Danny played again, I'm not giving to big of an excuse for Calvin, but after being out all night himself he was worn out , if you know what I mean......lol

Danny won back the $600 in short fashion, and another $2,500.00

Danny was in top form that Saturday night, he didn't make many mistake at all, he played some of the best 9-Ball I ever seen. Danny sure was a quite guy, he hardly said a word the whole time they played.

It took me,Calvin, & Top Water about two weeks playing $2.00 pool around Odessa to pump back up!, none the less it is a good memory!

Danny is a great guy, I'll put him my prayers!

We knew about his condition for a while here and kept it a bit quiet.
Before he got real sick he was competing in tournaments here in Colorado and it was the first time I had seen him play since the early 90's.
It looked like he was starting to get in pretty good gear.
Give it a good fight Danny like you played pool.

I posted on FB for Danny, but let me say again that I have enjoyed my conversations with Danny so much. He is a very captivating person, truly one of a kind. Seeing him break the balls and shoot 9-ball has been one the highlights of my pool experiences. Danny, I wish you the absolute best. If I can do anything for you please let me know.

Sad to say, I've never seen Danny play. I've only heard of his legend. I hope that changes.

Danny, you're in my prayers.

I wish the best of luck to 1 of the greatest players to ever put the stick together!GOD BLESS YOU MR.MEDINA!
