Tuesday night I stopped by my favorite pool hall in Switzerland, Ist Club in Zurich. Here is a view from the outside:

A view of the playing area. It was pretty quiet in the early hours of Tuesday evening. It picked up later:

More customers started coming in after I took these pictures. I ended up gettin in a game with one of the locals who played very good.

The owner was very friendly, as were the patrons.

I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town.

Thanks Jam,

I didn't try to smoke, so I don't know? But I suspect not.

It really is a beautiful room, and the tables are very well maintained.

Man, that is one *clean* pool room. Wow! Is smoking allowed there, or do they have a smoking ban, too, in Zurich?

It's been a while since I was in Zurich, but in much of Switzerland you could eat off the sidewalks. Nearly. Cleanliness and order are to be expected.

What games did people play? Mostly 8-ball or 9-ball?

Is that a carom table in the back? Was anyone playing?

Any snooker?

I know one game you don't want to gamble at over there.

Price?

Was in Zurich last time and called to check, it was like CHF 23 per hour. Way too expensive to play there. How are the rates at this place?

BTW :1.00 CHF = 1.01999 USD

And there is a Red Cross first aid station on the premises in case anyone is injured in a pool related accident. Thats very thoughtful of the owners.

I never ask the rate, I just pay the bill.

But it must have been $20 or $30 an hour, based on my bill at the end of the night.

Its all relative, my small hotel room downtown was around $350 a night.

No way, apparently thats the place to own a pool hall.
The Swiss obviously have a high standard of living.
I don't like their cheese anyway, it has holes in it.
A grilled cheese sammy probably costs a 50.

A very nice pool room

I have played here a couple of times in my travels and even entered in their weekly tournament once. What a friendly welcome I received when they, the competitors, heard that I was from the states! They were kind enough to let me place second and I was surprised to find that there was no money for winning with the exception of 1st which just receives the entry back. This group just plays for the love of the game.
Anyway, it was a very fond memory, meeting so many friendly competitors when on the road.

RIP Ist Billard

Unfortunately Ist Billard closed this summer, so I had to find a new place to play in Zurich.

Cristina Delagarza told me about another room, Billiardino, where her boyfriend Marco Tschudi works.

I went in to play & check it out on Monday night.

The place has several rooms with a total of 47 8' or larger tables. This is the area with 9' Brunswick Metros:

Billiardino Zurich

Prices are 24 Swiss Francs (about $27) per hour for pool and 27 Swiss Francs ($30+) per hour for snooker.

Zurich is one of the most expensive cities in the world, so this is typical.
