Pool World Loses The Miz

We'll all miss the Miz. I recall myself and Bill Marshall having breakfast with Steve a number of times in Norfolk and Columbia. Those were memorable meals--Steve would usually eat two breakfasts at those sittings.

I also remember watching the little finger on his bridge hand. It would signal when he was going to let his stroke go.

R.I.P. Steve.

What a sad, sad day! I like to think that he is up there playing like he always had, before he couldn't, and barking at Mosconi to play some.

There isn't much I can add to what has already been posted. We have lost one of the truely greats of the game.
RIP Miz
Steve

My sympathy goes out to Karen and the family.

In 1983 at the World Straight Pool Championship in NYC I got to see The Miz play for the first time. The Miz ran 150 and out in a match...it was truly awesome. The Miz had probably the smoothest stroke I have ever seen...totally pure. I don't think there has ever been any player that could shoot a long dead straight shot like the Miz. The Miz was not only a champion on the table but also in life, the Miz was a winner.

The Miz has done a lot for many and has made the game and the world a better place. We will all miss you. Thanks for all the memories. R.I.P.

I never met the man but I suspect that he is up in Heaven, just showin off.

A while back I did speak with "The Preacher" and he was telling tales of the Miz. The man sure did like to eat.

From what I have heard the Miz enjoyed himself, was well liked, was successful, enjoyed fame and had a good life and family. Sounds pretty good to me. May he enjoy life everlasting.

Thank you for the little clip of Mr. Mizerak in action..........I remember back in the early '70's when I heard of a new pool champion from New Jersey who was a schoolteacher....I thought it was so cool at the time, because we all know about pool's image....Steve Mizerak brought some respect and class to the pool world, in addition to the textbook stroke.....I'll miss him too....

The Miz

Another legend has left us.

I had a chance to see Steve at the Open last year and get his autograph on "The Rack" that some of you know about. He was in good spirits and giving Barry hell.

Good times had by all!

He will be missed!

We shall see you soon again, Steve!

My Best Wishes

To all who knew and loved Steve Mizerak. I never really knew him, but I met him once, at about midnight, in a New Brunswick NJ pool hall. Two Friends and I were lucky enough to see him beat Willie Mosconi in a $14.1 game to 125. I will never forget watching the both of them play, it was poetry in motion. He was one of the best pool players that ever lived.

Thanks for the wonderful memory....

Heartfelt condolences to Karen and family from everyone "back home" in Jersey.

my condolences to his family. I had the privilage of living close by steve's pool hall in metchen nj and him and allen hopkins were always banging them around.I often watched steve play many top players and he even banged a few around with me and thats when I fell in love with pool. He was always a fine person who made you feel comfortable around him. A few years ago I bought a cue of his from devil dave from jersey and contacted steve about the cue and he sent me some photos and personally autograhed them to me for free. He will be missed and I am glad I made it to the 9ball open last year and chatted with him before he took a turn for the worst.
God Bless him

Just saw the article in SI and it really hit me. The Miz did quite a bit for billiards. Thanks Miz....

My first glimpses of Mizerak's game came in the PPPA World Open Straight Pool Championships in the late 1970's and early 1980s. Needless to say, I was impressed.

Still, he was one of the guys I never really got to know well until a rather improbable incident during the 1995 Florida Flare-Up, a PBT event played in Fort Lauderdale. The venue was less than a mile from the hotel where everyone was staying. A fellow playing in the event named, if memory serves, Johnny Galloway, noticed me hailing a cab at the end of one of the sessions. He asked me if I was going back to the hotel, and when I said I was, he asked if he and a friend of his could ride with me. I said yes, and the friend turned out to be none other than Steve Mizerak. That five minute cab ride almost froze me, for I just didn't know what to say. I told the Miz that I'd seen many of his matches growing up, but that I remembered rooting against him when he played against my friend Jimmy Fusco in the final of the 1983 PPPA World Open Straight Pool Championships. It probably was not the smartest thing to say, but that's what I said. He took my comment in stride, however, and was very congenial. He and I had a couple of other chances to chat that week in Fort Lauderdale, and he made an effort to be friendly. I really appreciated that.

Didn't see him again more than a few times after that, be he always said hi. I'll always remember him as a guy who treated a starstruck fan with respect and warmth. Wish I'd gotten to know him a little better.

He will be sorely missed in the world of pool.

Wished I would've gotten the opportunity to see him shoot in person. My condolensces go out to his family, the pool world has lost one of it's greats. RIP MIZ

My first chance to meet Pro Players came at the 1996 PBT-Camel Tour Grand Prix of Puerto Rico. We were lucky to have Steve Mizerak among the players attending. My son was 8 yrs old, so we put our son standing on a chair and took the picture of him with Steve.

I also happen to have a Steve Mizerak signature cue (purchased at K-mart), which I still use today and is straight as an arrow. My first "true" two-piece cue.

My heartfelt condolenses to Steve's family. We sure will miss this Great Ambassador of our beloved sport.
