poolhall smoking

What makes you say second hand smoke being unhealthy is questionable at best? How do you know?

A good friend who owned a bar went to her doctor for a full check-up.

Her doctor told her she needed to stop smoking because her lungs weren't looking good.

She had never smoked, it was all from the smoke in the bar.

She finally sold the bar (she had 3 actually) and retired.

LWW, I would encourage you to follow your own advice. I can ingest anything I can get my hands on. I happen to think ingesting certain things would be a bad idea, and doing so contributes to some of society's problems. I am happy for the laws that prohibit ingesting those things, since I believe in those laws. I am always free to leave this society. I could move to another state, or another country. I could live out in the Australian Outback and probably be left mostly alone. I am always free to do or not do anything within my physical capability. I will, of course, have to answer to any laws in place prohibiting actions I might choose to do. For example, I am free to speed in my car and often do.

Then you do not believe that you own you.

Let me present you with a simple question.

A citizen uses cocaine in their own home. They do not steal to nor commit any crime to maintain their habit. They do not rely upon the welfare state to promote their habit. They do not operate an automobile while under the influence. They do not go out in public and create any type of commotion while under the influence. They do not cause excessive noise which bothers neighbors. They do not conduct any violence of any type while under the influence.

How have you or society been harmed, and under what pretense do you base the idea that you have the moral authority to impose your will upon them?

And let me add, I do not use cocaine nor do I approve personally of the use of cocaine nor do I believe that the law should be anything other than strict against anyone who commits crime(s) because of or to support their habit. I also don't believe that I have the right to impose my will upon them.

BTW ... if you have to answer to the law for an action, then you are not free to commit that action.

Words mean things.

Because "professional" pool players don't pay the bills for bars/pool halls.

Smoking

It'a amazing what a couple of [cigar] smokers can do to a pool hall,eyes,cloths,lungs,ect.ect.Down right sucks!

I'm in a unique position to have had one of my clients die from smoking (lung cancer ) another was told that if she didn't stop they would cut off her leg ( constricts )...they cut off her leg ..Still smokes. My brother at the age of 49 (two weeks ago ) heart attack..doc says it 's the smoking. So.. I'm in the pool room everyday (don't smoke ) but because our sport we are at the mercy...and I use that phrase loosely (mercy), of the smoking patrons. Which the other day I watched as this guy flicks his ashes on the floor...so I ask you...when is it enough already. Never mind ..nobody cares ...nobody listening.

I assure you that there are people listening. More and more places all over this country are realizing how smoking affects everyone, not just the smokers themselves. It is changing. It is happening. Maybe not yet where you are, but it's coming. And it works. It's so much nicer in the bars and resturaunts and pool rooms without all the smoke. Hang in there, Eddie. Hang in there.

haha, these threads always go on for 100 pages. I can't read it all because it just pisses me off. This is a no brainer. You know the old saying "your right to swing my fist ends where my nose begins"? Well, your right to indulge in the mindless destructive fix for a self-induced addiction ends where my right to breathe comfortably begins.

Well said..............

Couldn't have said it better....................

A couple of cigars, shucks, all it takes is one cigarette to stink up the entire room. And even with no one smoking the entire room stinks from the after effects. The airlines saved millions on aircraft maintenance when they went non-smoking, which they should have done decades earlier.

123 more days til the smoking ban goes into effect here in wisconsin.

Adn your right to use guns to force a poolhall owner to do what you want ends at his doorway.

And in the typical mind of a tyrant ... the less than 20% of studies that supports your thinking is correct, and the more than 80% which do not must be wrong?

And you have the audacity to use logic that flawed and call someone else an idiot?

But again, the tyrants are trying to wheel the debate into the ditch because they know they cannot win.

It matters not if there is increased risk ... that risk is willingly accepted by those who enter.

So ... shall I add you to the list of people who will be walking to work because your driving increases my risk?

No common sense at all dude !! Driving increases your risk when he hits you, and that my friend is called an accident, but when a smoker smokes in a bar he intentionally poisons my body and everyone else in the place. He is intentiionally "hitting" everyone in the bar, versus you hitting one pedestrian by accident.
What is it about the supporters of tyranny that makes them believe they have the right to dictate to a property owner that they must forego their business plan simply because they might someday enter that establishment?

LWW

OK, I"m gonna do a little target shooting while you are drinking your beer... oh well, them are the risks of having a free society. Just be sure to duck !! Yeah, I'm gonna bring in some napalm to the bar and show off to friends,, them are the breaks..
And don't tell me that it is up to the bar owner, because how can he infringe on my right to carry and shoot firearms in his establishment to the detriment of others, oh, you mean he can do that with smoking now !! And it's his call ,and only his call, I DON"T THINK SO. Time to quit playing the RISK game, becuase I can come up with 100's more....
And Don't give me the "well, if he puts up a sign and warns everyone first BS, because you and I both know you don't even like the warnings on packs of cigs, and now you want "signs" in eveybar to warn what goes on and what does not go inside the bar before anyone enters...

"Attention: random shootings by gun toten drunk guys, enter at your own Risk...... yeah, this makes a lot of sense.

PS: CHEFJAFF; the guy who thinks guns should be stopped at the door so as not to force bar owners to do what we want.... Hey, if you don't like the rules of the game, get out of the game, pretty simple really....... We don't need bar owners who don't give a crap about the health of their own customers or their own workers for that matter...... they need to go out of business.. Probably the same bars that serve expired food, have roaches in the kitchen, etc. etc... we'll miss them !!

Oh, and NEWS FLASH: we are winning the debate each and every single day. That is why more and more states are going smokeless and we are loving it here in IL.... Get to use to or get out of the way.

New flash: Debates are not won by guns.

You missed one important part of your argument...under present law, you can NOT obtain (buy) cocaine without breaking the law! I like the libertarian idea, but the laws (made by the elected lawmakers in behalf of the people) ARE laws! Enforcement is a entirely different matter.

Actually, law came BEFORE govt. That is why govts were formed in the first place: to enforce existing law.

how far can it go?

Just the other day, I see on TV this ad which condemns smoking even at home if you live in an apartment building.......talks about how second hand smoke will travel through vents, cracks in walls and ceilings, shows a child presumably in the next apt. playing and being affected by the fumes.....boy, not even in your own home.....I'm sure glad I quit smoking........

Well, your right to indulge in the mindless destructive fix for a self-induced addiction ends where my right to breathe comfortably begins.

Here's the flaw in your logic ... you don't have a "right" to a s,ole free atmosphere in property owned by another. You don't have a "right" to a pool hall even existing.

Now ... to use your own logic, your right to dictate how a property owner conducts business ends when you step off of your own property.

Only because of nanny state thuggery.

Now ... explain why business drops off when smoking bans come to be? Where are all the smokers who claim they would be there if it wasn't for smokers? Who will you blame when your local room closes?
