pool's greatest one liners & quotes

when rob walker interviewed ronnie o’sullivan after his champion of champions win in 2022, he mentioned his recent successes at the age of 46, that he

“is on a roll.”

o’sullivan replied,

“i’ve been on a roll for 30 years rob.”

Glad this thread got revived! I'll throw a cute one out there.

I was set to play Savannah Easton in about 20 minutes. She just got a steak quesadilla delivered to her table and I wanted to try to get in her head a bit. I said "I don't know how you do it, kid. I always play bad when I eat that much before a match." She thought for a second and said something like "Yeah, me too. But I'm playing you, so I'll be fine."

Cracked me up!
OUCH!!!!!! How did that work out for you?????🤣🤣🤣

I've mentioned this before but at Grand-Olive Billiards circa 1966 a local character named Rottenmouth Johnson was upbraiding someone and said, "You don't know if a basketball is round, square or diagonal; you're a f*cking idiot."

Another snooker one was Ronnie after he'd only potted a couple of balls asking the referee what the prize was for a 147.

Last time I went to the snooker a player played on when he needed a lot of snookers and John Virgo said on commentary "why not, it's not as if he's paying for the lights" which got a good laugh. RIP JV

I watched Ronnie on video when he ran one or two balls then took a break while the referee checked what it was worth to run a 147. There was generally a 25,000 pound or euro pot that they would split if more than one person ran 147. Ronnie did get his 147. He would have looked like a silly ass if he didn't as prolonged as that break was.

Even funnier, Ronnie asked and was told the prize pot was only ten or fifteen thousand another time. In the middle of his run he shot a six for a final score of 146! No doubt that was deliberate. I kinda expected a fine or some kind of punishment, but I never heard anything about one. It was funny, Ronnie shot a perfect game but it only totaled 146! 147 drew crowds and increased the gate.

Ronnie may not be the GOAT of cue sports but his name has to come up anytime the discussion starts!

Not sure if you're slightly misremembering or if there were 2 very similar incidents, but he potted all the reds with blacks, then all the colours except the black and was just going to walk away without potting the last ball as he didn't think the prize money was enough, when the referee asked him to pot it for the fans sake:

While we are talking about him (probably deserves a thread of its own tbf) he made a world record 153 break today:

No doubt about it. Ronnie made a red, I don't remember if he made the black this time or stopped before. It was on youtube, may still be on youtube.

At a professional snooker tournament in the 1970s the players had become dissatisfied with chaotic organisation regards match times, practice facilities and prize money.

In contravention of the governing committee’s rules, some participants expressed their displeasure publicly and in rather frank language. An emergency private meeting was subsequently convened to discuss possible sanctions and fines.

The chairman stood up and demanded “who called the tournament director a ****?”

John Pulman, eight times world snooker champion, replied “who called the **** a tournament director?”

As for the Ronnie stories all 3 mentioned did happen. The ref that got asked about the 147 was the same ref both times that he did make the 147. Ronnie liked him so he did complete the 147 by potting the last black.

I can't recall who the ref was for the 146. A 146 is way rarer then any 147.

Circa 1993, future BCA Hall of Famer Ewa Mataya Lawrence, after winning a WPBA event, was asked what she was thinking just before she shot the double hill 9ball in the final. Her answer would have been hard to see coming. She said she was thinking about where she left her keys. So much for any insights into the mental game.

Buddy Hall, never too pleased when he drew a really slow player, had the misfortune of drawing Greg Fix, the player I believe to be the slowest payer of the entire 9ball era. It occurred at a PBT event in Cherry Hill, NJ, in what I think was 1998. When Greg's slow play reached an extreme, Buddy called over tournament director Scott Smith to lodge a complaint and Scott asked Greg to step it up a bit. Greg did not, and Buddy called Scott over again after the next rack. Buddy Hall's off the wall, but memorable, comment to Scott was "this guy should be fined on every sot."

for me personally was when fats and i were cutting up our big win he said,

"this was the biggest score in my whole life"

To add insult to injury the seven was open and about as easy to make as the six. Couldn't have been plainer if Ronnie had stuck up two magic digits!
