Pro Players turned cuemakers

When I knew Joe Salazar he was a strong player in the DFW area. I saw him last yr at the US Open for the 1st time in 10 yrs and it appears he's a cue maker now... I've since seen him at Derby & VF working his booth.

T,

I first met and played JOE when he was painfully thin and running amoke beating pretty much everybody he tangled with on a bar box. Back then he was known as BOSTON JOEY, SEATTLE JOEY or TRACEY JOE based on when and where he was. Sometimes he forgot who he was.:)

I consider JOE a friend and can assure you he would be challanged replacing a tip.

Cue dealer---->YES Cue maker---->NO

Thumb/hand better?

I dunno if Jerry Terbrock is a pro-player but I heard he's good.

Also doesn't Corey Deuel have his own cues too?

I stand corrected...Thanks for the clarification. ;) When I saw him last yr we exchanged pleasantries but that was about it. I just ASSumed that he was the builder since I see him in a booth at the shows (I don't browse thru the cues very often. I can't afford them and I want them all of course) and not playing on the field of green. :o

Thumb is getting better, thanks for asking. The swelling has almost completely subsided but the bruising & sprain are still pretty severe. LOL, in the last two days my pinky has turned black. I'm going to the orthopedic tomorrow. I'll post his assesment in the ongoing NPR thread tomorrow.

Corey doesn't make cues... I don't know the details but I assume the deal is much like Varner & Archer's... production cues with the players endorsement.

!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shawn usually has a cue or two he's delivering at DCC look pretty
impressive one i saw had nice even points he had done himself. I
sincenerly hope he is able return to the tour. He is such a nice guy
always has time for anyone. I've always had trouble jumping balls.
After a Viking tour he took the time to show me how he does it. I've been a consistent ball jumper since then that was maybe 5 or 6 yrs ago.
I like his style tough competitor an smart player.

He said he could run 100 balls. Maybe he meant he could hop, skip, and jump 100 balls. :p

Chris,
I don't know how many balls George Balabushka could run but I do know he was a very slow player. Other players would go crazy waiting for him to shoot.

And to Gene a 100 ball run was only an average player.

Hal

Jerry Brock out of NC was a real decent player, and he makes some good player's cues.

Concerning Mike Sigel and his custom cues, I know that he CAN make a cue, but the question is..................does he?
I used to work for a dealership here in Japan that handled Mikes cues. I was the one that did all the communications with Mike and Renee. In general, the cues that he does make are pretty solid, but from what I understand, his cues pretty much play the way Mike wants them to play and tend to be a little heavier, deflective, and better for games like 14:1 or one pocket instead of 9-ball.
However, there was one time when we had a customer that wanted a remake of the cue Mike is pictured holding in his World Class Custom Cues add. I called Mike, ordered the cue, and it arrived 3 weeks later. Pretty quick for a custom cue maker???

Hey Chris...In Nagy's and George's era, especially in NYC, a 100 ball runner WAS an average player...so ya never know! :D LOL

Can you honestly imagine playing those guys in straight pool? You would need a bed, not a chair. No wonder it went by the wayside. Everyone got too good. He probably said it like "he can only run 100... poor devil".

Let's see,

Ernie (of Ginacue fame) plays pretty sporty Banks
Tim Padgett was a strong shortstop speed
Mike Gulyassy played at the A level
Paul Mottey, another strong player
Nat Green of Southeast plays good
Joel Hercek plays a very nice game
Rick Howard is a good player
Judd Fuller can play (shhh)
Hank Corsair was a solid 14.1 player
Jerry Olivier is a strong shooter
Guido Orlandi's got game
David Tice always played good
and even Kerry Zeiler can make a ball or two. lol

Just a few I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there's many more. Of the poolplayers that became cuemakers, Billy Stroud and Sigel are probably the two best. Bob Hunter is not far behind or Mike Gulyassy.
Oh, Pete Tascarella was another top 14.1 player.

Locally we have Garten Bierbower played a little under Troy Frank and makes cues that play great. I used to leave my Black boar, Barry Szamboti, and Southwest at home to play with the Bierbower.

cuemaker

Well in my opinion and that means nothing to my wife!!! i will say a friend of mine makes great cues, and jump breaks[sledghammer] mike gulyassy from greenville s.c. known him quite a few years and all ways agood guy to me GOO BBBABY FACCCEEE STICK:D :D :D :D :D

I had this cue it was made and signed 1 of 1 by Mike Sigel all i can say about the cue is it was a very nice looking cue and the finish was some of the best i have seen. When i got the cue it was unchalked and thats the way i sold it so i cant say anything about the hit.

Happy Holidays :)

I have handled Mike Sigel cues directly from Mike and Renee for several years, although not so much recently. I have had many of his custom cues. They play real well, to me. Balance is a little different at first, but they were all high quality. The 1 of 1 the Iowa_player had (pictured below) was one that I got from Mike in 2001-02, and it was sweet. As for ordering a custom cue and getting it in quickly, Mike offered some cues that had model numbers. These were custom made, but not 1 of 1, and he had more than one of these models about ready to go. He usually only had to do some final work, match a shaft up to it, etc. I expect that was why you got the second cue quickly.

Garten is a good friend of mine. I would say, in his prime, he is about sixty now, he could have given Troy a spot. He also spent a lot of time with Max Eberle. Check out this link, http://www.maxeberle.com/Pool%20Bio.htm.
Go to the sixth paragraph, if you don't want to read a lot.
His cues do play nice, IMO.

Actually, if I remember correct, when they first started in the cue business Varner and Sigel were partners importing cues. They soon went there seperate ways. It is true that Mike makes some cues. I do not think he makes them all. A few years back I was working the BCA tournament in Vegas, Mike had the booth next to us. He did have some cues he made but most of what he had were imported with his name. Now, I must clarify that this was a few years back. I am not sure what is going on at the present time.
