Proper way to put on a layered tip?

I took one of my shafts to a local guy that puts on all my tips. He has always been really good for me....I have always used LePro hard tips and have always been very happy with them. I got some Molavia tips recently and had him put 1 on my shaft. It looked great.. I played with it for about 30-45 minutes and it started to come apart....about 6 months ago I had a Moori put on and it lasted maybe 15 minutes and it came apart.??

I just seem to have bad luck with layered tips I guess. My question is.....I watched my friend put on the tip. (if I had the equipment I would have put it on) but he trimmed it all down.....then once it was trimmed down, he took some Soft Scrub and put a small drop on a towel and wiped it into the side of the tip and ferrule....Now....is this what is making the tips come apart? This is the only thing that he used on this tip that I could see that would cause a problem.....

Any suggestions? I have another tip I am going to have him put on tomorrow and if the Soft Scrub is the problem, we will not use it and see how that works but I would like your advice beforehand..........Thanks everyone

it sounds to me like he's not using a sharp enough razor when he installs the tips. with layered tips if the blade isn't real sharp you run the risk of the tip delaminating

I dunno, it was a brand new razor..I have no clue as to what could have went wrong....

maybe it wasn't that sharp right out of the box. i've had this happen to me when i do my own tips.

i've never heard of the tips you mentioned having lamination problems. maybe he tried to cut too much off at a time

other than a dull razor i can't think of anything that would cause the tips to fall appart

tip trouble

I have tried them in the past and had issues with them myself.

I would try a different brand.

I think a lot of the wizard tips, great quality at a fair price.

sounds to me like you may be cutting on a dry tip, or not spinning fast enough. heat can also mess it up. go easy from the out side in and don't press too hard with the blade.

Not sure what the lathe rpm was....it was somewhat fast....and he didnt cut to hard or too fast...he was going pretty slow and taking off a very very little at a time

You need really sharp utility blades and lots of fine cuts. Trying to take 20or 30 thou in 1 pass is realy too much for a lot of laminated tips. The leather should come off as shavings. I don't very many rpm , about 600 or so is usually enough. But a sharp blade and fine cuts seems to be the answer with laminated tips. Some use a sponge and lightly dampen the tip. I cut mine dry with a new sharp blade, or a resharpened blade.

Only reason I am fretting so much over these tips are, they are the ones that are going to be used for the cue buildoff on here......I hate to send these tips out to be put on the cues we will be trying out and they go bad right from the get go

What kind of tips are you using? another option is to let me do the tips, or use triangles. I personally use Hercules. I have NEVER had a problem with them. I like Wizards too, but I'm out.

I personally wouldn't use no cleaning products on leather man. The leather would soak that chemical right in and would probably give a chance for problems. You have to remember that the layered tips are glued together. The chemical in the soft scrub could be weakening the glue or the leather.

If anything, burnish the side of the tip and maybe apply super glue or tiger leather burnisher, not a cleaning chemical.

I agree, the chemicals could be causing the reaction. I have never had a problem with those good layered tips. Just use a real sharp utility blade along with some of PaPa's 409 (spit ;-) for burnishing. Then I usually hold a piece of leather against it til it shines right up!

Yea, I turned my head and when I turned around he had the soft scrub...and I pretty much said CRAP to myself....I have done a few tips for myself and never used anything like that personally...and mine have always came out just as good as anyone else could do it...

I am gonna go over there today and me do my own tip and see how that works...now he did use a compound that he made to polish my shaft....HOLY COW..When I got the shafts back from Eddie Farris..I really liked them...but with this stuff that my friend made, I have never seen or felt anything like this before...the shaft is the smoothest shaft i have ever played with...its kinda like it has a clear coat of laquer on it (its not though) but as smooth as silk....i was pretty amazed....he gave me the ingredients for it and its about 6 items....im gonna try and make some myself

I will let you guys know how it goes with me doing it!

I always wet the sides of layered tips myself along with a sharp knife they cut very nice and look good. And I put super glue around the side of the tip burnish it and it never mushrooms and they all play very well.

Use Morri Tips and the problem will go away, best layered tips made. They last longer, cut / trim better, and burnish better then any other layered tip.

Morri's aren't what they used to be. They might still clean up good but you don't know what your going to get as far as hardness rating.

Was wondering what the 6 itmes and what amounts of each did he describe to make the shafts so slick? I too think that if the blade is not sharp enough you run into a heat problem.

is there a heat problem with laminated tips / shafts?

can you burnish either one too much? perhaps thats what caused my first ob-2 to warp.

Any updates on the tips?
Don't know how these tips are put on by others but I must have put on over 50 Molavia in the last 4 months and didn't have any problem with them. I have a deluxe, use loctite glue, use a razor blaze for cutting the tip flush with furrelle and then use chris's tip shaper to cut the dime and nickle radius. Takes me less than 10 minute to do a tip.

I did however run into some problem with sniper when I was doing the tips for Ginky, I didn't sand the black layer on the back of these tip...thinking they were suppose to be backer. Anyhow, the tip pop off in about a week during play. So for the sniper tip, I now sand the black layer off and there hasn't been a problem since. I've also put on the new moori and have had no problem to date. The moori still cut nice but they don't play like they use to from what my clients tell me. Also...more and more of my client have switch to soft moori instead of medium and I'll try to convert most if not all to Molavia and they love them.

Regards,
Duc.
