Hello all,
As we all know trying to make a career as a pro is a little more than rough. Just curious what percentahe of pros have normal jobs, and thosr that do, what they are.
I think it would be kind of cool to know what the pros do for a living when they aren't at the table.

Anyone in the know, please chime in.

Probably 99%. You can't make a living playing pool. They have a job or they are living with someone who helps support them. Back in the 70s I was thinking that I wanted to be a professional pool player. I looked at the rankings in Billiards Digest to see how much money they made. That year, the third ranked player in the world was Buddy Hall. He made $17,500. Well, I ain't fighting Buddy Hall for seventeen five so I went out and got a job. That ended my wanna-be pro career right there. :D

That's about as far as I got too. LOL.

My engineering degree has provided a much more comfortable lifestyle than pool would ever have, and I still have to time to play 4-5 days a week.

I believe a good percentage of them work in a pool room in some way or another!

Behind the counter, house pro, and there is probably a few that dont want to discuss exactly what they do!

Pool players' jobs

First of all, Jay, the entire forum would like to thank you for your service.

There have been VERY few top pool players who held jobs outside the game. The most famous would probably be Joe Balsis, who took a 17-year hiatus from pool to concentrate on the meat business (hence the moniker "Meatman"). Irving Crane sold Cadillacs, on and off (it was a family business). Among tournament players today, I know Dave Daya has an auto-parts business in Pennsylvania, and Steve Lipsky is a statistical analyst. No doubt there are other working-stiff pool pros here and there, but I can't chronicle them. GF

Thank you for the appreciation!

And that is awesome!!!
It put a huge.smile on my face thinking about Mr. Crane selling Cadillacs... pretty cool

This is exactly the kind of info I am looking for!!!

I thought he just raised the shot glass and let them raise the bet? Lol

I think you may have unintentional set the wheels in motion for a earthquake or jam of a response.

I must say the shot glass has not been raised nor the bet as he struggles with the loss of his best friend and closest thing to family in the late great Ronnie Allen.

In fact,it's close to ten years without the shot glass that I know of.

Being a seventh grade English teacher in Edison, NJ, didn't stop Steve Mizerak from winning four straight US Open 14.1 titles from 1970-73.

Being a professor of Mathematics at Middlesex Community College in Middlesex, NJ, didn't stop Tom Jennings from winning consecutive US Open 14.1 titles from 1976-77.

Oh, those NJ educators are so tough over the glorious green felt!

If you really want to be a champion pool player, teach in New Jersey.

The Miz was a school teacher. I'll bet his classes were a trip. :D

The Miz was an excellent school teacher..he quit at the age of 36 because
he was getting too busy in his other pursuits.
He did well on the stock market also...he made some fortunate buys while
still in college.

His trophy case at his last pool hall in Lake Park had as many teaching awards
as pool trophies....and he was proud of them.

Although I used to bug him about his misspelling of 'ferrule' in one of his books....
...he spelled it 'furl'....

I miss the Miz

I know a top player that tells about his income from making donations to sperm banks. He claims he is making money hand over fist. Players are pounding out a living any way they can. They claim it actually builds up wrist muscles, strengthens fingers for making a solid bridge and breaks you of the habit some have in throwing their elbow out on the final swing. "Stroking to make cash" is what the hustlers call it.
This player told me he always makes a large deposit in the bank every Friday because of his job. “Yea, I carry a wad of money too and when I play pool, I don’t let people lowball me on a bet either.” It’s not as if you can let this kind of money slip right through your hands.”
I declined to shake his hand.
Personally, I think some people are whacked out.

Top players of today that work. Not many make more cash then the legendary nit himself. Mr. Carlot Donny Mills. He is probably the best player with the highest income.

People get excited about it, but it is a hard living.
