Pulling up in the middle of a set when score is tied

Not the first time Dennis Orcollo pulled stunts. In January at the Derby, he quit Max Eberle in the finals of the straight pool. Name me any major sport where someone could just up and quit in the finals. Sad day when someone like this is considered to be a Saint for pool IMO.

People sometimes get real funny when it is their own money they are betting. I remember Grady always saying he had a lot more respect for the players that bet their own. He also said Efren would not stand still for a beating meaning Efren would never go off.

Dennis pulled a shitty move and he knows it. If you're trapped all you can do is beg for mercy and hope the other side lets you out for less or take the beating. You can't pull the move Dennis did.

Funny that everyone is talking about Shane's "gambling" problem but it sounds like maybe Dennis is the one who actually has one.

I had someone do this to me once. Little race to 7 for 500 with me getting the 6 out and the breaks and at 5:2 the guy quits. We didn't post. I protested but what could I do. The guy was a shortstop/semipro who posts here sometimes. He probably doesn't remember it and I won't post the details but it was a crappy move.

I hope Dennis realizes he was completely in the wrong and setting a bad example. I hope that he issues an apology to that effect through Jay or someone else.

lol. I love how a con artist who openly admits he attempted to scam a champion is a "good guy",
and dennis is a "bottom feeder" for trying to pull his leg out of the trap.

Only on AZB.

As soon as we posted the money he had lost it. My only thinking was trying to get 2 sets out of him not 1. I got off to a big lead to make sure to get control and than I decided to change how I was playing the game to give him opportunities at the table.

With positive, uplifting stories like this going around about matches between quality local players and world champions, I just don't understand why the general public gives pool such a bad rap...

But you're forgetting that this is the stuff movies are made of, i.e., "The Color of Money," "The Hustler." In pool, there's a weird sort of romance or adventurism to it. I can't explain it, but it's there. People like the hustle in pool.

I have to say I watched that DCC 14.1 final between Dennis and Max and it was a really bad sportsmanship display by Dennis.

To be in the 14.1 final is quite an honor and, obviously, if you're there, you play the game well.

The race was to 100 and guys of this caliber could run a 100 so, you're never really out of the match.

For the last ten minutes or so, when Max was shooting, Dennis kept climbing the bleachers in order to watch Alex who was playing another final at the same time. He continued with what looked like very little interest in his own match and then I don't recall the exact score but it was something like 80-30 Max was up when Dennis walked over and forfeited the championship match (raked the balls I think).

If I were Max I'd have been very offended over this display.

If I had a bet on Dennis, I'd have been incensed.

My roommate is a pro and he was there. This was what I heard first hand. Dennis Orcollo ROBBED people all week in the action room with games he was a HUGE favorite. He blows his load in the casino now gets in one bad game and acts like a little *****. He goes in the hallway on his knees crying basically. I personally have went from being one of his biggest fans to absolutely losing ALL respect for him.

The first time I've heard about this incident is on this thread. It almost sounds Earl-esque with the raking up of the balls because he thinks he can't win the game.:p

Do you mean there's a Filipino Earl on the horizon? :o

Yeah the whole set he was watching Pagulayan play accross the room as Max ran out. At one point he stopped shooting as if to say, hello, we are playing here. I think that he has come from the poorest existence one could imagine and the good life as a pro pool player has spoiled him. He probably has no idea that sentiments over here can change pretty fast. Maybe he just doesn't care what anybody in America thinks, now that he's here playing.

What he did with Max was ridiculous, he didn't even try to win. It was a short race, maybe to 150. Christ I have ran 136 before, so he had a chance to win, I think he had 30 or so when he quit. For him it's just all about the money obviously and second place must have been enough.

Dennis played Chip Compton One Pocket for $2,000 and everyone said he was the underdog. He was behind 4-2 and 6-0 in balls in a Race to Six and somehow managed to win 6-4. No one got robbed! Dennis had to overcome a tough opponent to win. Some bad info here.

Dennis had been playing all day, one tournament after another. They held the Straight Pool match up for hours until he could play. They really should have waited until the next day as Dennis was worn out by then. Dennis asked them to wait but they said no. He tried to play but was too drained and finally just gave up. I wanted him to keep playing but I could see he was done! Max was happy, he got the first place money ($2,500 I think).

Yeah, Rob laid it down good, acting like he was a bad player, shooting off his thumb until the bet was made. He's a good hustler and he definitely trapped Dennis. Other people reported this move to me. They told me later that Rob got Dennis in a trap. Congrats to him for being such a good hustler. That's something to be proud of.

So what do you think of the way he acted playing Max in the straight pool finals?

Quitting was an insult to his opponent, the event organizers, fans watching and any potential betters. He was kneeling on the seat of a chair, facing away from the table to look at Alex while Max was playing. Just rude. Max, just continued to play a strong game, it was obvious DO didn't care about winning the event.

It reminded me of when they split the straight pool challenge at SBE 2 years ago instead of playing that out. Charlie Williamswent to the Billiard Beauties event at Sandcastle Billiards, and Mika was playing in the finals of the Million Dollar Freeze out. That was a complete slap in the face to the organizers. They shouldn't have even paid IMO. They should either be there for the long haul or not even enter, they knew there would be a problem with travel if they did well enough to make the finals.

I have always been such a huge fan of Dennis' and maybe I let that frustration out by saying he robbed people all week and for that I apologize. Let me phrase it this way; did he lose a bet all week in the action room?

I dont see a problem with asking your opponent, but only if both parties agree. Quitting in the middle, tie or not, is the same as conceding IMO.

I can't believe this comment, It is called matching up . I have been on both ends of this. There is nothing wrong with making a game to your advantage. You have hustled many over your lifetime, I am sure. All of the old road trips. Trying to defend Dennis in this spot is useless. Dennis should pay in full. Not 50%. Dennis has been around far too long to know right from wrong. I wish I could of quit many times when I knew I made a bad game. Betting way more than a dime. I finished the set and paid off. Don't you like it Jay, when you get the nuts. I do, because it is rare. Dennis made a bad game, congrats Rob the way you handled the situation. You paid $850 to Dennis to let him out of the set. Do you think Rob should have asked Dennis to play even ? I am sure you would have pulled out the stack if this was the case.
