Question for Justin... TAR One Pocket Challenge

I hated watching 1 hole for years, but in the last few years I've seen a lot of high powered-runout matches that weren't boring at all. What I won't watch is a match where the guys take 5 minutes or more on every shot. They call it moving. I say move a bit faster please. The new breed of 1-hole player can be sold ppv and probably will pick up many fans when they see how it's played at the top level now. I also believe that more top players would play it, or play it more if the money was there in purse form. I would buy it (PPV) if they were players like Frost, SVB, Busty, and others that take little time between shots and if they have a window they go for their pocket and try to runout. Johnnyt

One way to make one pocket more interesting for TAR would be to have the players play Run Out One Pocket.

Each player gets 10 breaks and tries to make as many balls in one pocket as they can each inning.

Par for the better players would be 100. That is a ten ball average for each inning. Very difficult but doable for the best players.

Each player would have alternate breaks so you would get to see both players play.

Not true one pocket but one foul is not true 9 ball.

The chances of that being a PPV and me banging Kate Upton are about the same.

...one foul is not true 9 ball.

I hear another call for a Shuff/ SVB 1-hole TAR!!!!!!!!

How about Shane vs. Dennis O. in a two out of three set One Pocket match? Each day they would play one set, a Race to Five. Anyone interested in seeing this?

P.S. They played three times last month in L.A. with Shane giving Dennis 9-8. Shane won the first and Dennis won the last two. My prediction is that Dennis will be the new "Efren."

If Dennis shoots at a reasonable pace...yes i'd love to see it.

Adding another voice...

While I won't go so far as to say that I find the 10 Ball boring, I'd be much more inclined to buy if TAR offered a good 1 pocket match... especially if some kind of liberal shot clock were employed (2/3 minutes)

I'm a one pocket player. Once you've played the game for a few years, it's hard to watch rotation games. They just aren't the same. I used to love watching TAR at the Derby because there seemed to be some one pocket every day.

The idea of alternating games of one pocket, 10-ball, and 8-ball is not bad. You can't do one game of one pocket though. Would have to at least be a race to 3 set for each set of race to 6 on the others.

Justin,

I know that some of your ppv customers won't pay for One Pocket, but is there any chance you guys can put together some elite One Pocket Challenges?

Maybe do a King of the Hill type deal with a list of contenders that play their way up to see who Challenges Efren.

There are several of us that really love One Pocket and outside of the Tournament matches there really isn't much out there to watch. I think if you promoted it right and got the top 20 or so guys to play, you could make money. I know there are many of us are tired of watching Shane play 10 ball.

May be wishful thinking but I would love to hear your thoughts

In a similar vein of thought, I'd like to see some top tier 8-ball challenges. The common denominator is that TAR needs to mix things up a bit so that it can appeal to a more diverse audience.

I also don't buy the 10 ball matches but would definitely buy the one pocket. I can only learn so much from watching the 10 ball b/c I don't shoot as straight as them. One pocket matches can teach a lot more IMO.

I would also buy 1p, even if its the middle of the night here in Europe when they play

Its also a must to have a knowledgeable commentator like Billy I. Even if the players are not ultimate world class, he is able to make it both interesting and educational

Agreed 100%. A knowledgeable commentator such as Billy will increase the educational value immensely.

For me a rack of 1pocket is always exciting from the beginning to the end. Almost all rotation games lack the excitement, except when players are dogging it or play bad position all the time. Nowadays the rare matches I watch are almost completely 1pocket, with the exception of European Pool Championships live stream, when you get a whole selection of different matches on different tables with 4 different disciplines plus teams. But still 1pocket is exciting, even with Dippy :)

I've never bought a match-just no interest in the rotation games anymore. I'd definately be interested in some 1pkt, though. There's plenty of guys to choose from. A long set with Frost v Raphael would be anything but boring.

If a guy is a top player, he may not have seen every situation there is but he has seen very similar ones. 2 MIN is long enough with maybe one extension per game. If once in a blue moon they have to shoot a little faster than they'd like, so be it.

This idea would be the best format. I would buy it if you had the right commentators....

In my experience with the all arounds and the one one pocket match we did....they just do not sell at the numbers needed to break even.

That said I'm not opposed to doing a one pocket match if its the right guys. By right guys I mean a match that would draw as much interest as possible. Efren obviously being the top draw. Problem is he's not here much. Maybe September at the earliest. I am going to try and set up an all around between him and Shane then that includes one pocket, 8 ball and 10 ball.

The one pocket match we could probably do fairly easy with regards to player availability and one that interests me is Scott Frost vs Shane or Scott vs Alex. If Alex plays there would have to be a shot clock just because I like the guy too much to wanna hate him for taking 5 minutes to decide to bunt a ball two inches. My gut tells me Shane and Frost is the answer for a one pocket match that has a chance to make money though.

What do you think? You buy SVB vs Frost? Say race to 6 two out of three sets?

Personally if we do SVB and Dennis it will be 10 ball. Anything else and the hate mail would be overwhelming. Unfortunately it looks like it will be awhile before they hook up as when Dennis is here before Tunica Shane is in Indonesia.

Would pay double to see this match. Would love to see a race to 7 though...theses guys are so offensive it would still be over in decent time.
