Questions for Efren Reyes & Buddy Hall

RICH 93, you are Hilarious! You just made my day. I was angry with my wife this morning and was pretty much in bad mood the whole day but not anymore. But kidding aside, your post might turn out to be very close to the answers Efren might give. I have asked this questions to Efren a long time ago and he gave me those same lines but in our native language.

Well, a serious one this time, Joey, along the lines of Neil's question. Pardon my having fun before with the imaginary aiming dialog.

We've all heard from Efren that he played his best in the 70's, before he came to the U.S. (scary thought!). As a 61 year old hoping to continue to get better, I'm curious as to what he can't do now, or do so well now, compared to years ago? Is it a question of stamina? Eyesight? Nerves? Jadedness (been there, done that, ho hum, kind of thing)? Back problems? Etc. Personally, I play better than I did in the 70's, and I'm older than he is. Of course, my play and his are not on the same planet.

A second related question - is the competition tougher today than it was 20 years ago?

Thanks!

Heres a question to ask him, if you don't mind.

Some one wrote a story about how you [Buddy] visualized your bridge in a dream and when you woke up you were unbeatable. True?

I heard something similar, while lying in bed he figured something out with his grip / back stroke. It was said that first thing in the morning he practiced what he came up with the night before and the rest is history. Has anyone else heard that one?

Ask Efren about the taper on his shaft. It appears to me that the first 3 inches or so are not consistent with the rest of the shaft. The shaft moves out from that point. Not much but noticeable. Also I have seen him warm up with one shaft then change it before a match. Maybe we can get some insight on this? Or maybe it's just my imagination.

Efren is very secretive :) Inside Pool "What's in the Case" interviewed Efren and he wouldn't really show his playing shaft, he kept beating around the bush and reverting back to his practice shafts, it was kind of cute LOL

There is no way he will divulge in his aiming technique. I predict very generic answers/conversation regarding this subject, though I do wish he would give us a tell all.

Ask Buddy how has he been able to keep his spirits positive and forward-looking in a pool world that has not been so kind to its players over the years.

What does he think would help pool gain notoriety and respect with mainstream America?

Buddy Hall is always upbeat and fun to be around. What's the secret?!

[I'm hoping to hear that it's a good woman by his side]:grin-square::smile:

Joey: Efren, what do you think of CTE?

Efren: Sorry, my english not so good.

Joey: You know, Hal Houle's center to edge aiming system?

Efren: Oh, my english .... not so good, sorry.

Joey: You know, an aiming system where you aim from the center of the cue ball to the edge of the object ball and then pivot and ...

Efren: Oh, aim. Yes, I aim to put ball in pocket.

Joey: But what is your system to aim?

Efren: I aim for pocket. You have to aim for pocket. I want it to go in pocket.

Joey: But how do you aim it to go in the pocket? How do you line it up?

Efren: Oh, I see. I line up to hit the ball so that it will go toward pocket. So that it will go in pocket.

Joey: So I guess we should call your system the aim for the pocket system.

Efren: Aim to go in pocket, yes, that's what I do.

Joey: OK, so what do you think of the Perfect Aim system?

Efren: Oh, my aim not perfect. But I try hard. I aim better 30 years ago. My eyes now, not so good.

Joey: But how do you position your eyes for a shot?

Efren: Oh, I look at cue ball. Then at object ball. Then I keep looking at object ball. Because I want it to go in pocket.

Joey: Thank you, Efren.

You are so dam funny, I had to respond even though I am late getting to the airport. Thanks for making me laugh this morning. I was already getting keyed up and you loosened me up just right with your wit and humor.\
Thanks,
JoeyA

Ask buddy about this picture. What? Inappropriate? I'm sure buddy's got a sense of humor after all these years?

I don't think this would be appropriate regardless of Buddy's sense of humor. Sorry. This one goes in the round file.

What's wrong with that photo? I happen to like it.

From left to right: Joe Kerr (Joker) one of the best TD's ever, a very young Earl (say no more), Joe Burns the owner of Forest Park Billiards - site of the Dayton Opens of the 70's and Buddy Hall who won most of them!

If you have ONE specific question (for Buddy or Egren) you would like answered, please write it in this thread. Time is short so I can't make any promises but I will try to have some of the questions answered..

Thanks,
JoeyA

I read an interview with Efren many years ago.

In the interview he was asked how he put so much spin on the cue ball. He said something to the affect that he hits near the center of the cue ball to get max spin.

This is completely counter intuitive. Can he elaborate? Was it mistranslation? Did I misread it?

If that was bad taste I do apologize. Probably wouldn't be to funny to Buddy. Heres a better one.

:joyful::joyful:
Did Efren hurt his right hip or ribs celebrating the 'World Cup of Pool' victory recently? Was it that 'bust-a move' joyous victory dance or the 'Busta bounce' when Bustamante lifted him up and bounced him a few times? He looked like he limped a little when he got back on the floor. Is he feeling better now?

Have a great time!! Sounds like some long days and nights. We're jealous.

Be well

PS: If you find out about the 'Efren taper', PM me please. ONLY ME. Frank (dabarbr) doesn't need the help-I do.

Joey;

Most or, at least, very many of the players from the PI address the cue ball at the very bottom/center before they make any last moment changes. Even on the break shots. Is this a style, or does it serve a purpose, if so, how does it help the player and how do you make adjustments from there.

Thanks

Mike

I was wondering the same thing...

But now that I think about it, perhaps it was a reference to his weight change.

Rileman cue

I was wondering if the story behind the rifleman cue was true. Have been told that BOB Meucci made it special for you. The butt is birds eye maple and the is made of rock maple. The butt is the butt is also wraped with light green irish linin. any information would greatly apperact.

Questions for Hal

I am remembering that 3 filipinos learned from Hal- in California 1985 . and what a time that was with buddy Hall, Earl strickland ,King James, mike Segal and on and on. mark

Looking forward to his take on CTE etc. Maybe you can ask if they generally subscribe to aiming systems and if they know pros who use them.

I would also like to know if they have any advice on what allows someone to play at a high level even past the age people usually consider "prime".

But now that I think about it, perhaps it was a reference to his weight change.

It may have had something to do with the outcome of the match and the facial expressions shared by each player. No one likes to lose, especially to a young pup. :D (It could be a sore spot for Buddy and I wouldn't go there without knowing for sure).
