Quitting while you are ahead

If a fair time limit is set and agreed, cool. You have to work tomorrow, I have to work tomorrow, cool. But don't be a nit and tell me that you have to quit in 20 minutes when we have been playing for hours.

If you have no where to go and are just ducking out winner, or to protect what your up, you're a nit..... That's the biggest thing I hate about nits! They're afraid to take off scores.... The biggest scores I have taken off were because I was willing to play someone up to 40 hours and wouldn't dare quit winner. I only ever quit one guy winner. I had a slight head cold when we started and after 35-36 hours had full blown flu with a severe sinus infection and was about to literally collapse. Even when I quit (up 1500-1700) I offered to leave the money up and make an appointment to play later. He paid it off but at least I gave him the option not to right then.

That philosophy didn't work for Gary with Mark but I agree with your point !

quitting winner after one set= COLOSSAL NIT

quitting winner when your opponent is starting to win= BIG NIT

quitting winner without any notice= NIT

quitting winner after you have told your opponent up front that you have a deadline and that deadline comes with you being up: OK

One thing I notice in reading through this is that most of the guys that bet higher seem to have a more pronounced gambling ethics mentality. They believe in giving and getting a fair chance at the wagering and quitting winner runs against this grain.

Other guys who you can pretty much tell dont really even gamble much seem to be just fine with quitting winner.

I have nothing against losing a hard fought battle but If my opponent wants to quit while I'm in the hole without giving me forewarning or even setting up another playdate they will be putting themselves in the nit catagory. (I won't whine or complain but I will remember--> they get no action)

This is never a question of them having the right to get paid or even the right to quit, it is just a matter of gambling etiquette.

I think anyone who puts their roll on the line knows what I'm talking about.

There is a guy here in town that loves backing people against me and occassionally plays me if I give him the last 5 and the break. He has quit me winner 3 different times. The last time he quit me I gave him the last 6 and he said he could only play two sets so I said that's fine. He got dog assed lucky to beat me the two sets that both went hill/hill and he quits. I pay off. And then I realize he didn't quit because he had somewhere to go, but that he was going to play another guy who he plays nearly everyday. To say I was hot is an understatement. After I cooled off I decided the only way to get my money back is to go in with the other guy. So I bet 100 on the first set. My horse gets on the hill first and I had just got done telling him how to prevent the 9 from going in the back two pockets. Then my horse dogs an easy out and it gets hill/hill and the other guy starts running his mouth... so I tell him to bet another 100 on this game, we post, and the 9 ball rockets in the back corner pocket! And then my horse loses the next set and that was that.

It's alright though... i'm still 2K+ winner on the guy. You can't bite the hand that feeds you I suppose.

And just where in the hell have you been?

good point but....

not meaning to offend the poster or anyone else for that matter........i just think discussions like the one in this thread are a JOKE!....if you want to 'gamble' then do just that!.....if you win it's your choice to walk away with the 'prize' and if you loose then suck it up!....maybe then the next time someone wants to play ya you'll either practice more so you have a better chance to beat them or ask for the right spot to make your chances better.......if you're prepared to gamble......be prepared to LOOSE it's that simple......

skins ----------------- to gamble or not to gamble, that is the question......

Good luck getting action with that mentality.

I dont know about anyone else on here but the more im up on someone, the more i wanna be up. If im winning game after game it just motivates me to keep pounding that ass. If you're not beating me after the first few hours, you're not gonna beat me. The best win is by submission.

Nit?

He played you exactly what he said he would play you before you started play and you are mad? Sorry, but if anyone is a nit it is the one that loses and then wants to rewrite the deal. I often play people while they are waiting on someone else. I can't see any issue here except you lost when the other guy played you exactly what he said he would and then you are unhappy and meddle in his next match-up. I know you are a good guy but you are the one with egg on your face according to your own post.

if you want to be a long term winner gambling you will treat each bet separate and play when you feel you have the best of it. and of course quit or change the bet when you dont. but it may hurt your action with him in the future. it does you not good to lose all you have won when you realize you arent going to win at that game.

Good luck getting action with that mentality.

have had plenty in my "tenure"......my attitude is if you think you can beat me than take my money.....you want it right??, like i want yours.... so if you loose don't cry like a baby when i take it from ya.....i won't......like i said if you're not prepared to loose, don't play.....

It would seem much easier for you to have a lawyer write up your specified conditions, make copies, and then have them handy when you are about to get action. You and your opponent can sign the contract to a specified number of games, no quitting before such and such a time, etc.. That way there is no argument of he said/she said or whatever.

Here's a joke fer yall...
Guy and his son come into a bar to celebrate his sons 21st b-day. The only thing is his son was born only a head.
So the father sits his son up on the bar and orders his son a beer. He says " Today is my sons b-day and i am gonna treat him like i would any of my other kids"
So the bartender slides one down to him and the father helps him drink the 1st one...
All of a sudden a torso pops out of the head! The father yells "It's a miracle! Get him another!"
So here comes the 2nd beer and sure enough after he drank it 2 arms pop out.
Again the father yells "It's a miracle! Another one quick!"
So here comes beer #3...and again the 3rd beer brought the son 2 legs...
The father yells " if ihad known this would have worked i would have done this along time ago!!
Well the son gets up and wobbles around the room alil bit falls out the front door and BAM! Gets hit by a car and dies....
The father is in total shock...he looks at the bartender and says how could this have went from the best day in my life to this??
The bartender says hmmm....maybe he should have stopped while he was a head???

LOL!!!!

That philosophy didn't work for Gary with Mark but I agree with your point !

That situation is different.... If you're playing someone that is betting on the wire and everyone you ask says the guy is good for 5k, well, you stop at 5k. Not at 12k....

With all of that "motivates me to keep pounding tha ass" I'll take the 7. I will play more than a few hours. Chris has a good Diamond to play on at Players.

Smart....this reminds me of a story my father told me in my teens......something along the lines of I am a bull.....I can run down the hill, corner one, and have my fun.....or I can walk down slowly, join the herd, and have all the fun I want :D

Or something like that.....point is, be smart and think long term, not just about today.....why kill easy action....

Is your dad the old cop (Robert Duvall) in the movie Colors?
