Ra Hanna Commentary - Am I The Dinosaur??

I personally cannot stand listening to old people commentate. No energy and monotone, and not to mention eyes are not as they once was so they call the wrong balls and predict the wrong shots.

They do however have a plethora of knowledge, but this is not a documentary. The commentator should bring energy, excitement and engage the audience, these old commentators simply do not and will put me to sleep faster than the golf channel.

This is only my opinion, but I think the audience would grow if we inject some high energy knowledgeable people to commentate and make it exciting to listen to.

If Ra Hanna was the one that sounded young and exciting with passion, then I loved his commentary. I do not remember the name of the commentator during the match, but he sounded young and exciting and was the best commentator i have heard in a long time outside of matchroom events.

Energy???

Pool is, by nature a subdued activity... except for Earl...

If you want energy you are watching the wrong channel... try the NBA.

I didn't hear Ra's commentary but I defer to your perspective.

Some people like Ra's commentary; some people don't. I want to concentrate on the people that do.

Ra does a lot for our sport. He promotes it. He streams it. He is part of the pool journalism world.

I hope he takes everyone's criticism as constructive. Personally, I think the man is awesome and that we need more people of his ilk in our world, not less.

I agree with the less is more sometimes comment above.

It isn't that the commentary was terrible, although it was uneven. What it was was too much, too often. No silent moments, and with their irresistable urge to pack in comments every second, some of it was filler drek.

Yes, he was more under control with Mark, and I thought it was much better when he spoke a little less.

Sometimes I just had to laugh (or wince) when Ra would say something about funkalicious something. I swarn, these young whippersnappers!

I never thought I'd ever use that term even in jest, but at north of 60 now, it's not only legal but mandatory.

That said, looking around the arena, I mainly saw a lot of older guys. No doubt some new blood is required to just do the replacement on the losses, let alone grow the fan base. If it does that, I approve of it.

I think Ra brings energy and enthusiasm to the commentary which is nice but at times he can be a bit overbearing trying to fill the air time. Sometimes less is more and in certain moments you have to just let the game speak and the players do their thing in the non crucial moments of a match. All in all I like what On The Wire is doing with Beau, Ra, and Chris Santana.

We need to cater to the newer audience and some of that new money. People wonder why many poolrooms die off, it could be because the customers are dying off and room owners don't get the new money in there. Get the youth in there and you grow your customer base for years to come, they grow with your business.

Ra Hanna is one of the good people in pool. He is high energy and has good knowledge of the game, more than what his commentary showed. By the way, if I am not mistaken, he has to be around 60, not 100% sure.
Ra, if you are reading this, I enjoyed hearing you, but you could tone it down a bit. LOL.

For me the bottom line is pro pool has gone almost nowhere in the last twenty years. At best we are stagnant and not growing. It's time for some young people to get involved who have a different perspective on things, a different attitude and some new ideas on how to grow our sport. Everyone is always talking about what pool needs and I say give the new guys all the encouragement we can. More power to them if they can liven things up and make something happen that benefits our game.

Exactly Jay. What do we have to lose?

I didn't catch the Ra stream either..But I know I have always enjoyed your commentary Joey..You keep up with the game well, and you have a good clear radio voice, (no TV please :p) and you always involve your co-host with good questions the viewers might ask!..You also manage to coax a few good stories out of them, during the dead spots!..I think you and Buddy Hall (or JJ) would make excellent co-commentators at 1P..Have you ever worked with either of them?

PS..And please, never let anyone put Danny D. in the booth with you!..He is way past his expiration date!..I'd hate to have to 'mute' you! :o

Two great minds, etc.--->
...I chalk this up to me being a jaded cynical bastard. I'm glad they are out there trying and if they can somehow get someone excited about pool more power to them. I would happily listen to those two over Danny D.

I don't disagree - but, IMHO, commentary, whether good bad or nonexistent,
has about as much to do with the situation as the proverbial 'drop of piss in the ocean'.

I like good commentary. Danny D and Grady fencing with each other will always bee my gold standard. I would detest Danny for hen-pecking at some point in EVERY match, but that was his nature and his knowledge was never in question, and usually appreciated by myself and many others.

I like commentary that is laid back and knowledgeable, Attentive (yet judicious in their remarks) commentators that do not take themselves too seriously. Sure, I get it... its a sweet gig that you wish could pay you. However, it isnt going to (much if any), so be a real live human and tell us whats going on and please DO SHARE the embarrassing story about Mike Dechaine's first encounter with a person of indeterminate gender, or some such entertaining banter. Grady would always make me chuckle talking about the personal habits or personality quirks of easy targets like Earl or Mike Sigel. This is the stuff that makes me even want to watch a stream or an accu-stats video / Youtube.

Nothing better than Danny Busch assembling the technological apocalypse that is POV Pool, placing cameras, managing the scoreboard and what-not while Box (Clarence) delivers some damn insightful scroll on one pocket as the players fence with each other. I love it. Unrefined, honest and delivering what you need to grow as a hungry pool addict.

BTW, Giant thanks to all the streamers out there.
