I saw Evgeny play Efren with 7-8 handicap. They played 20gbp (40usd) per rack.
Evgeny wasn't motivated and lost few racks and quit.
Later in the evening Evgeny played Bustamante. I saw Evgeny making amazing shots, his motivation was high. Later I saw Busty paying him some cash and leaving the table with frustration on his face.
I asked Evgeny how much he won. He said "200 pounds (400 dollars), score 5-0". I asked how much he got weight, Evgeny answered "Nothing of course, Bustamante cannot play One Pocket"
Later I saw him beat Efren for few racks also.
That happened in Cardiff, either 01, 02 or 03.
I don't know how much Evgeny's Pyramid career has taken from his pool skills, but I believe he's one of the top One Pocket players in the world today, still.
I'm not a gambler, if I was, I could take easy 5k from you Jay![]()
Ronnie Alcano gave lot's of credit to "russian boy" about 1pkt also..
and Efren?Grady said:He's ahead of me over the years because he has always been a smart gamemaker and a solid player. But he never dreamed of playing me even One Pocket when I was at the top of my game. I always spotted him and he didn't always win when I gave him weight.

DeadPoked said:So you make this comment and then hear from the horses mouth who Efren learned from and you don't even acknowledge them... But yet you take jabs at Freddy in the thread about how well he played banks.
It's funny to see how you act like you know something about pool. You are as shallow as a water puddle Mr. Armstrong.
Freddie, freddy the beard said:Even though Grady chose not to authenticate whether I could make a bank or not, on that "I heard the Beard was a bum playing banks," thread, and he sure as hell couldnt beat me, and even though I did bust him playing even 1pkt when he was as good as anybody in the world in the 70s in my joint, the 4B's Club; right is right, he also beat me giving me 11 to 7 in Milwaukee when I fell helpless one night. The usual game was I get 9 to 7. We probably seesawed the many times we played that way, and I did beat him with only 9 to 8 on his break at the Billiard Cafe. Mr. Watchez mentions Efren. At the tournament in Richmond KY (1990? Efren needed a spot from Grady. The spot was that I would coach Efren on shot selection (how many players can say that?), but after a row whereby Efren wouldnt shoot what I suggested, and scratched and lost the game, I quit coaching him, and Grady BarB Q'd him from there. The point that I am making is two points actually, one is that my game varied up to 4 balls sometimes, and the other point is that Grady always played great back then. As for Billy, well he was slicker, but at no point was he going to play Grady even 1 pockie in those days.

I honestly don't think I would of beaten him if we had of played. I'm pretty bad on years, but around 1984 I think I could of given any American player big problems playing one pocket. I remember 3 one pocket tournaments that I finished second twice and third once. All around the same time.Joyner beat me 5to4 in the finals of the US Open in Kalamazoo, I couldn't sleep the night before the final match. Too nervous, I never have been regarded as a tournament player. Same thing happened to me in Roanoke Va.when Dave Bollman defeated me 5 to 4 in the finals. Mike Sigel beat me in the semi finals, the year Varner won in ,I believe Baltimore.
In 1972, Buddy spanked Billy at Red Box' joint in Shreveport, playing even 9 Ball. Right after that was when Buddy and I played to a draw, after a whole week's play, at even up 9 Ball.
I won Red Walling's One Pocket division in '83 and 85 and the Sid Mann event in '84. At each of these fine tournaments, I had more than $20,000 cash on me and no one opened their mouth to play me even One Pocket. In fact I gave Ronnie a ball and had no trouble with him at all. There was NO TIME during the eighties that if I played Cardone he didn't need at least a full ball. In Las Vegas in 1981 I played Squirrel 9 to 7 and 8 to 7, gave Jack Cooney 9 to 7 and gave Warren "The Monk" Costanza 9 to 7 and beat him out of $4,000 at two hundred a game.. Sitting on the sidelines were Ervolino and Ed Kelly. They didn't wish to play. In fact just after that I gave Johnny 9 to 7 in New York at his home room, $1,500 a game, if it matters. It was robbery.
So give me a break with these ratings. Mr. Cardone, your memory isn't very good.
