reasons for the meucci downfall

I think there's a common thread in some of these posts and that is as players we'd all really like to see Bob return to the lathe and turn out some cues that play like old school Meucci but built to the high standards set by todays makers. If he ever does, put me on the list for one from the Rifleman series he made for Buddy.

The sneaky pete"s were the best back in the day ..
Every road play that came thru NYC had one .
To make the new ones play better up grade the shafts and tips.

Bob Meucci HAS already done that (below). He has a new "classic" shaft that is suppose to be exactly like the shaft of 20+ years ago. F.Y.I.

No the common idea that should be gathered from this thread is not to buy a Meucci cue.

There are TONS of great cuemakers out there. The only folks that should be buying one of these turkeys is someone that doesnt know better.

And for someone to say that Meucci was the cue to have in the 80's , there were Szamboti, JW, Balabuska, Tad, etc and for nearly the same money.

Give me a break, the cue to have in the 80's...:p:p:p

Remember, even more than Earl, Jim Rempe was their player rep and used a Meucci. A lot of people bought cues at that time just because Rempe used one!

Your right, there were all available. If you took a poll at that time to see who was playing with what cue which brand do you think would have been in more peoples hands? And Im not talking about your average Joe, Im talking about players.

If Meucci's were that bad, that can be our next game. Ill get a hold of an 80's hustler and Ill have to play with that big piece of junk :groucho:

Would I buy a new Meucci? NO. But I would be fine playing with one of the old ones. In fact through all the cues Ive had (admittedly not nearly as many as you) the only one I regret getting rid of is a Meucci.

Ill see if I can get one before I come down to visit :grin-square:

I bought one because a friend of mine told me how good it played and it was not even a first line cue it was a second. I could not see the flaw that they claimed was there, it went together good and rolled straight. I have won a lot of games with it and still plays good. Sorry I have no problem with this brand.

$$?

OK, now the question is how much would a late 80's (88/89) gambler in v.good condtion,w/some small scratches but still plays lights out go for in today's market? (ballpark figure).

I still love those old Meucci Originals. I have probably owned a dozen of em in my life and some of them really hit well. They had a lively hit and I use to think I could draw whitey up and back and all around if I needed to do so. I can still remember being in a money match one time and like an idiot I broke with one and the thin walled long ferrules smashed apart with the sound of a gunshot. I only had one shaft so I had to shoot with the Wallabushka to finish that set out.

You got me there, there were thousands of them out there. But, alot less now.

I have been down here for 6 months and have only seen 1, (first one last night)

I think the advent of Simonis cloth made that whippy lots of cueball action shaft less popular.

I guess I got lucky then. I bought a PP 1 on Ebay a couple of years ago and
since then no issues. It was well made with super balance and its one of the best playing cues I have.

Me too. I'm up to eleven Meuccis now from 80s, 90s, and 2 from 2007 and 2008. I even have 2 black dot shafts. All good. I've never even seen a bad one.....(not saying they're not out there). Price on ebay hasn't dropped either. But, I don't put alot of emphasis on how a cue looks--I pay attention to how they feel. I don't think I've ever looked closely at the "points" on any of my cues. I really don't care.

Back in my active and gambling playing day ( 70s and 80s), everyone had a Meucci. The pool halls only sold Meuccis....the table providers and owners only brought Meuccis when they came to collect quarters and recover the tables. If you didn't have one, you were not in the click. I got my first one when I was about 15 (sneaky pete) and I thought I was the man. Wish I would have kept that one. Now in my older age I have my own pool room....all my friends who I get into pool only want Meuccis when they decide to get their own cue. I try to recommend a Schon (my player), Joss or something else, but the name MEUCCI is stuck in their head. It's a shame if the quality has gone down. Hopefully, Meucci will make a come back.

I play in a bar league and for the most part these are people who know little or nothing about pool and pool cues. They just want to play, drink and socialize. Nothing wrong with that. But i was really surprised at how many play with Meucci cues. I was equally surprised at the number of Schon cues that these people have. Not as many Schons as Meucci's but still.............
Lots of graphite cues ...........................

Here is my take on Meucci's downfall.....

I currently own a Meucci 95-8 and a 95-17. The 95-8 has taken a beating and has held up perfectly. Of course I'm looking to refinish it soon when I get the money by Ryan at RAT Cues. Still has everything original. Rolls perfectly. It has the best shooting Meucci shaft I've ever shot with (pre-dot of course). I went away from the solid LePro tip to the Moori Soft and it plays excellent. I get great action whether following the ball or drawing. I can draw full table atleast and I'm not a pro or anything like that. It's a 2 pointers and the points are not perfect, but they are well made and pretty damn straight. The ringwork is all perfect too. No lifting or any uneven lines, etc.

The 95-17 is about the same. The MOP diamonds look good and the points are good with no uneven lines that stand out. The shaft on this one was cut down and I havent adjusted to it as much. I'm sure the steel joint has something to do with the hit as well.

Now to the new Meucci's that me or my brother has bought in the past few years.....

I bought a HP-3 brand new from a supplier. The cue looks awesome in the picture, but when it shows up I was disgusted. It was a 12 pointer w/blue dot inlays and diamonds in the point with some funky writing in them with a blue dot inlayed in the middle. BEM forearm with 12 ebony points. Well almost or all the points were CROOKED and the lines looked like shit. The rings were Blue Mirror Rings and most had finish that was bubbled up or the mirror was crooked. Then most of all the Meucci logo was BARELY even printed on the butt. The red-dot shaft shot horribly as well. I had a black-dot as an extra shaft for my 95-8 and it shot better, but you dont have the action when putting any english on the ball.

My brother bought a HP-1 a few years before I bought the HP-3. All 4 of his points look like crap as well. Crooked and out of line. Most of the veneers look horrible. The boxes in the buttsleeve are out of line and the diamonds there look like shit too. His red-dot is stiffer than the one I had on my HP-3. Go figure. I'm sure if I looked at his again I could come up with more but I'm sure everyone gets the point.

I have several meucci's in my collection.I like the older ones waaaay better. I WILL NOT buy one that has the meucci logo in "cursive" print! Its only the block script "Meucci Original" that feel right to me! The long, thin wall "plastic" ferrules were part of what gave them that great feel. I also have had to replace the ferrule (several times in fact, never used a break cue til I became "educated") and mistakenly used a "fiber" ferrule and not the original material, although it changed the "feel" a little bit, still felt good. Since I am down here in Espiritu territory, that is my current player. Majority of players I see use Espiritu's and Schon's with a smattering of Meucci's and other brands
