You guys got it pretty well covered. Did anybody mention Bob Vanover in the second set of photos. He's in the third photo.

Do you know he broke and ran more racks than anyone to win a tournament? He ran out the entire Race To Nine in the Texas State Championships years ago. On a big table too. When Wade Crane posted that perfect 1.000 on Accu-Stats, he only ran seven racks. He had to win one more set, since it was two out of three. I wish I could remember who he did that against. Hell, I was the TD! What a memory? At least senility is painless. :D

A little more about Bob. He was barred from the BCA Seniors after he won it like four times in a row. And he was well into his 60's then. They banished him to the Masters division, because he played too good! :)

Also, Bob Vanover won the Texas State 9 Ball Championship 8 times, in 1979, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986 & 1995.
He placed 2nd in 4 of the first 7 Senior tournaments that Mizerak started.
And he did all this while working full time as a furniture salesman.
He just turned 75 in February.
Good, solid pro.

Buddy Hall, maybe Atlantic City...ring a bell, Jay?

does it bother anyone else that all the trash, flame threads get 10,000 views and a thread with great nostalgic pics of famous players hardly get noticed?
kinda reminds me of people that go to races , just to see a wreck

Jay, I used to play in the tournament where Bob Vanover ran 9 racks. It was played at Moyer's in Austin and the tables were 4 X 8 home size with pretty large pockets. Not to take anything away from Bob, who was a tremendous player at the time, but Jersey Red (Jack Breit), when he played in the tourney would comment "That pocket leaks!"
Still a tremendous feat to run nine and out.

Danny

Thanks for the pics, those are great
I think I'm gonna start letting my hair grow out, then feather the shit out of it :D also I'm gonna roll into tourneys sporting the peach colored velour vee neck, the tight ass Jordache jeans and some fly Puma's

Guess I am old school, but these kind of threads are why I keep looking at the main forum.

It was definitely at Resorts in Atlantic City. That much I do remember. About 1986 or 87. And it may well have been Buddy. Thanks for that update. One guy who would know for sure is Pat Fleming. He did the Accu-Stats on the match.

Too bad, he doesn't have time to come on here. I hate these guys who work so hard. They set a bad example for guys like me. :)

Tang was here all day yesterday getting ready for the Predator Ten Ball in Vegas. He really wants to do well there. Dave Hemmah came over and they played for a couple of hours. Cheap sets for $20. Just for practice.

Afterwards Tang challenged me to a set of Banks. It is one of the weak links in his game (he cuts balls like God). He complained that he can never beat me at Banks, not even once. And he didn't last night either, 3-1 loser.

I told him that in Ten Ball all he needed to make were "cross sides" and "cross corners". He shoots those just fine. You rarely will shoot a long rail bank in Ten Ball. He'll do just fine next week in Vegas. Players beware of the Tangster! TALLEY HOA!!!

these kind or THAT kind i desribed? ;)

Just got off the phone with Wade and here is the poop.

It was 1985 and it was at Resorts in Atlantic City. They were playing races to 7, best 2 out of 3 sets. Buddy had won the first set. In the second set Wade ran the last two racks to win the second set. The third set Wade ran the entire set out to 7. Thus in actuality, Wade strung a total of 9 racks together.

BTW, Jay, Wade said to tell you hello and to wish you well.

Great thread! I was going to identify Dave Matlock in that second set, but was surprised that someone beat me to it.

Tell him I want a rematch in Banks. The last time he beat me, he parlayed it into 50K (the same night) and a new poolroom. TRUE STORY!!! Just ask him.

Yes he did, Shortstroke. I gambled with Dave many times when he was living in and known as "Longview Dave". Dave has lived in Clinton, IA for ages now. Hasn't played for years since he, some how, got a fish hook caught in his eye. You are also right Dave is a super nice guy and was so easy to gamble with.

TOO COOL
I will tell scott these pics are up here when I see him at the next tournament.

P.S. he still plays great

May be its just me and my eyes..but Mike Massey in that picture looks like a white version of James Brown. hahahahahaha
