Red Cloth @ Hollywood Billiards !!!

Snookers in RI, before they moved, had red cloth. And I'm pretty sure some Joss Tour stops where played there at the time.

I don't remember if it was slow or not though. Did not much like the place.

Red? I thought they were tan?
The tables were fast.
I just played at the new Snookers this past weekend and they are all green, thankfully.

Russ,

Bummer about your back. Hope you get better soon!

Chris

Thanks buddy. Last night I moved the wrong way and fell to the floor in pain. Sucks big time. I think I will make over to HB to watch at least on Monday.

Take care!!

Fatboy makes a lot of sense. I certainly don't begrudge him for doing whatever he has to in order to obtain the highest and best use of his investment. This being a pool forum I think most of the responses to the changes are coming from a player's perspective, is all. I'm down in Orange County and am not really familiar with what has taken place at HB in terms of dissuading players etc. I do know that it was very nice for Jeff to host the Swanee in recent years like he has. It's probably true that had he simply closed down and the place happened to open up several months later as a nightclub with no pool tables, everyone would just be feeling sad.

I'm wondering where the Swanee will be next year. Given the responses to this news so far, I wonder how many regular local participants will pass on the tournament if it's played on these tables as they are now. Hard Times is closer to my house, if that means anything to the powers that be.

AHahaha

The condition of the house cues is an indicator of the amount of respect there is for the game by the owner. When i travel for fun, i dont bring a cue since 9/11. I have no idea what your point is. But I am sure they get lots of non cue travelers like me at HB. Afterall, it IS on HOLLYWOOD Blvd!

I never hit a ball in the place-been there many times.

My point is that I would assume that the players in the tournament this weekend dont' use house cues!

Now, on the other hand, I would also assume that a large percentage of "Bangers" who play there use the house cues and wouldn't know the difference between a nice cue and a beat up POS house cue.

I do agree that a nice pool hall should have decent house cues!!

:)

Sorry to hear that Russ....

I'm sorry to hear that Russ, I know exactly what you're talking about though.

I've got to go do some work but take it easy and hope to see you one of the days at HB....

Wonder if they'll let me use my Blue diamond chalk??

I don't think these new guys know enough about pool to know what chalk of a different color than the cloth does to a table. I assure you I would be taking blue chalk with me to that room. The first (and last) time I used red chalk it turned my shaft pink and was a b*tch to clean up.

Once the tournament gets under way and they see what blue chalk can do to a red table, they might enforce a red chalk rule by the 2nd day. Depends on how bright these guys are.

Good luck in the tournament and on the tables.

That's a yes to red chalk. My dad will be picking up masters red chalk. So we have the option of that one or silver cup. To my knowledge, it will be enforced to use the red chalk, so no blues ladies and gents.

Also, Jeff Bey saw this thread and would like to thank everyone for their comments. He felt business wise, it's the appropriate decision. He felt he rather "go red than go dead."

Well that's it. Been working since 1am and just finished now at 6pm. been doing that since Sunday. We'll see if I can catch some type of stroke in 24 hrs. Hope everyone goes to support it. Take care.

Just curious So Cal guys, why H.O.B.-Santa Monica doesn't get mentioned as a room for the Hollywood Billiards-serious players-ex-pats to switch to?...

When I visit L.A. that's where I usually play - nice tables, easy parking, great area, and unlike Hollywood Billiards, there's always decent action, provided by Wayne and the rest of the gang over there...:)

Seeing how he committed to the Seminole tournament quite awhile ago, he could have at least extended the common courtesy to hold off on the tables until after the event. People are already committed with paid air fare & hotels to go to this event and he darn well knows how atrocious red cloth & red chalk are to serious players.

LOL gotta hand it to the guy. It takes a lot of gumption to sh*t all over a large group of people that spent hard earned money to travel to his place of business to spend more hard earned money on his food and drinks.

As a fan of pool, its natural that I am sad to see a pool room switch to these conditions. As a realist, I understand the need to cater to a different group. Finally, as a thoughtful person with common courtesy, I would not have done this until after the pro/am event was over. People committed to going to a tournament under much different playing conditions.

Jeff, we've never met but your actions tell me a lot about you. If we never meet, that will be ok with me.

From a room owners point of view, I understand the switch, but at the expense of a great tourn and tour., WOW. Things are tough all over and especialy in CA. I do not know Jeff personally, but I wish him well. Rooms can survive on pool players as well as leagues. Treat your players right and good things will come along.I have Tournaments and Tours in the works and I hope to see some of the So Cal boys up here soon.

Jay,

Let the seminoles know if they want to pull out of Hollywood I would be honored to hold their Tour here next year!

I just spoke with a former #1 in the World (quite recent) who was planning on going to Hollywood. When i told him about the cloth, he didnt even think 1/2 minute. He said and i quote "I'll stay in Vegas then".

I agree Monte, but you have to look at it from an economic standpoint. Jeff will make WAY more money from the banger, nightclub, hip hop crowd than he will from real pool players.

Smart move on his part no matter how much we all hate the color. Jeff is a smart guy and I seriously doubt he just woke up one morning and decided to do this.

My .02

Russ, I get what you are saying. The bangers, filming and corporate parties really DO pay for that place. But how does Burgundy cloth attract the party crowd more? Kevin is right on many aspects too. Everyone, other than the hardcores, can't deal with 4'' pockets. We've all seen that 30 minute game of 8 ball! I do know a bunch of loyal players that have given up on that place because of Jeff's attitude towards them. I used to spend about $1200 a year in that place as well as most of my friends. He could still have that business and the bangers but he has made it clear in many ways he only wants to concentrate on one group. It truly is a shame because it doesn't have to be that way.
Jeff has done a bunch of positive things for pool though. A lot of great events go down there which I truly love. He also did memberships for a while and had a great 5 to 8 pm rate for the locals. There are a couple of old timers there that he comped their membership (which no one knows about). That does speak volumes.
I hope it all works out in the end because HB is a special place!

It would be great for the players and the Seminole tour if they could hold this event at another pool room. Seriously sh*tty thing to do so close to the tournament date.

I can't recall, has there ever been a televised or streamed event with burgundy cloth? The Camel tour had tan.
