Reed Pierce agreed to this game from Corey...

Billychips will put his money up. He is not quite the whoofer (I think that is where Jamie comes in at), he is a backer. I know he backs Bartrum and Kirkwood from time to time and he has an in with COREY. So he isn't just pounding his chest. If he is looking for action he has the stones to see it through.

Please keep me up on the outcome if we can ever get it together.

sorry

I Want To Clarify Something I Said Earlier About What Happened With Reed Pierce And John Schmidt...

Ricky Bird Was Staking John And Was Telling Reed He Had To Bet 10 K And Reed Stalled For Like 3 Days And Then When He Finally Said He Would Bet 10k Ricky Bird Backpedaled And Said He Only Wanted To Bet 3k...and Reed Was Like No Thanks Because There Was A Few Of Us Gonna Bet On Him So Betting 3k After Being Wolfed At So Hard Was A Complete Insult....

It Was Not Schmidt's Doings.. He Is A Class Act And A Great Guy ...sorry If I Led Anyone To Believe He Tried To Back Out And Change A Game....

Yes I was. Grady ws the first I ever really saw play what I'll call top notch 1-pocket. I was very young and very, very green when he played Jack Cooney in Denver and Colorado Springs.

I hope Grady will forgive for poting this, but here goes:

Grady had a place in the Springs and in Denver and he and Cooney were alternating playing in the Sprigs one night and in Denver{Aurora} the next. As best as I recall, Grady's car had been stolen and was left without wheels, only his motorcycle. The problem with this is that it was in the winter and temps were around 10 degrees or well below freezing.

Anyway, it was a seeknight and in comes Grady looking like a popsickle dressed in a smow suit having driven app 75 miles in that weather and shaking like tree.

Jack ws warming up and noe of us could believe what we saw. Grady drank something warm and walked aroun a while apologizing for the stall and eventually got thawed enough to play.

Their shot selection, runouts, and long games had me on the edge of my seat and at times when they would attempt {what weemed to me} something totally insane, well, it was all I could do to keep quiet and I often wanted to tackle one of them.

Grady ended up 4 games winer that night after several hours of play. Grady slid back into that snowsuit, got on the bike, and drove back to the Springs in that blistering cold.

Folks, there is a lot of talk on here about gamble, honor, integrity, and many other things. This is an example of "HEART".

I learned a big lesson that night. I'll never under any circumstance own a motorcycle.

Ironman,
Another great story and post.
I won't pretend I can speak for Grady, however, I don't think you have to worry about him being upset if he reads this. To me, this just added to his already epic legacy!
Please, keep the stories coming. They're very appreciated.

Yeha, I liked that story about Grady, too. I can just imagine him looking like a frozen popsickle in the dead of winter. :D :D :D

Thanks Ironman.

That one certainly impressed me. I am not nearly tough enough to ride a bike 75 miles in 10 degree weather. I'd have been looking for my nuggets for a month.

Years ago I was playing pretty sporty on the bar box and had just won a very fluky $5000 at the horse track and of course I wanted everybody to know it and wanted everyone in Denver except Medina to fire at it.

About this time a huge blizzard hit Colorado and we were all just sort of stuck in the pool room when at early afternoon I get a call from an old scuffler we called Indian Carl. Carl could play a little on the barbox and came up with pretty good backers from time to time. He was a riot too.

Well, Carl tells me he has a guy there with a big roll wanting to back him for like 100-200 a game which was good action in those days and I wasn't getting any play around Denver anyway. Just one problem, Carl is in Laramie Wyo which is 123 miles north of Denver. Being the genious that I am, I said sure, grabbed a buddy of mine and off to Laramie we went.

The blizzard was brutal and as we got into the mountains on 281 north of Ft Collins, I was getting real worried. We made it though and felt lucky to do so.

We found the bar and when we got there, there were three cars out front and the town was near closed. We walked in and I asked the bartender about Carl and he sort of smiled and led me to the end of the bar which was sort of hidden and there was Carl passed out on the floor. I was hot enough to fly to the moon.

We got Carl up and after a couple of minutes he recognized me as he started to come around. I asked him where this big backer was and if he was ready to play. He says, you got the money to play"? I said sure and flashed a big roll at him and he just smile a toothless smile and said, "he got a call and had to take off, I'm reall sorry". Then without any hesitation he asks, "bud, things ain't going to good, loan me a hundred will ya?"

After ranting and raving for a few minutes, the bar tender told me I should leave or he was calling the cops. I explained that I had just driven 123 miles to play this goof and it took 51/2 hours in blinding snow. He suggested I drive back and didn't look like the type to give a lot of shit.

It is funny now, but back then it wasn't as I drove about 11 hours in a blinding blizzard to loan a drunk $100. So, John, at least you were smart enough to come away with something.

This one reminds me of one time in Bakersfield when I got a call at my poolroom from my buddy Don Jeffries. He was at a bar in Buttonwillow, about 20 miles away. He said some guy was blowing off steam and wanted to play anyone Eight Ball for $100, a big game in the 70's. Only problem was, the Tule fog had blown in and you couldn't see ten feet in front of your car. It took me over an hour to get there, and it was one scary ride.

So in the bar I go and there sits Donnie at the bar. He perks up when he sees me. He says the guy is right over there sitting down. So Don calls out to him, "You still want that game?" The guy says sure and comes over to the pool table. So Don pulls out a hundred dollar bill and tells the guy to put up his money. His response was, "Let's start out for $10 a game and see how it goes." I almost went through the roof. I had made that very difficult ride to play a stiff, who was probably going to quit after one game.

I was steaming and got a little testy with my friend Don. He straightened me out quick. He said, look there are never any guarantees when it comes to gambling. Sometimes it works out and you make a score, and sometimes it doesn't. This coming from a guy who may have been about the best ever rolling dice out of a cup. I listened to what he had to say and went on and played the guy for $10. He quit after two games and we won $20. Don handed me the money and told me never to complain again if he called me for a game.

Don and his brother Jim put together a huge trucking operation (Jeffries Trucking) and got rich over the years. They were well known in Bakersfield. Don was not that big, maybe 5'8" and 165 pounds, but he worked as a bouncer at clubs when he was a young man. He made the news a couple years after that when he killed a much bigger man with one punch outside a bar he was working at. He had thrown the guy out of the club and the guy came after him with a club. Donnie lowered the boom and they guy went down never to come up again.

I think they are based out of Phoenix now.

Hold on pardner. I guess I need to talk to Reed first. Maybe then we can take this conversation a little further. I haven't seen or talked to him in over two years. We'll see, it's not out of the question. Just may take some time.

And remember one thing. Reed asked for some time to prepare for a big game. There definitely will be NO game in Florida in the next couple of weeks. But nice try anyway.

Bill,
I couldn't wait to hear what you thought of these 2 (Pierce and Deuel) matching up. If you have time and care to, could you give us your take on their proposed show down? Would Reed need the wild 8 or any other spot? Not being as familiar with him as I am with Deuel, I read what Ironman and Joey A had to say and since both of these posters are top shelf and respected, their view on Reed still being strong even after the layoff adds another spin here. So IF it ever does come off, what do YOU think?
Much thanks!

I am sure, Reed, needs the 8 when he is in stroke, Terry and he hasn't been in stroke, or even played in ages. Reed and Ronnie both walk around greeting people and chatting with them during lunch, which is southern cooking at its best and then again at dinner. They don't even allow playing pool until 3pm after the lunch crowd has gone. They have a top quality bar area which is always full. I have eaten steaks at the Como Inn and Lowry's in Chicago and never had a better steak than Reed and Ronnie serve.

Reed loves what he is doing now and doesn't need action. On the pool table, Reed, is hard to get along with but off the table he is one of the most congenial, friendly people you will ever meet. He has a magnetic personality and it is showing in the way people are flocking to his new restaurant-sports bar.

As Reed has said, he would need four months to get close to being in stroke again. I know this thread, trying to match Corey up, has gone on a long time but to wait another four months, I don’t know if you guys want to wait that long.

I did just get off the phone with Reed. He iterated to me that the $10K set with Reed getting the 8 ball in Columbus, OH was reduced to $3K by Corey’s backers when he said, post. He said he, like you said Jamie, did have a similar problem with John Schmidt in FL.

Reed told me he is interested in playing Corey with the 8 ball. He also said and don’t take this personal Jamie, that he would only negotiate the game with, Corey, himself. As has been said, you can Google, Reed Pierce’s Sports Bar and Restaurant, for his phone number.

Reed is a very congenial guy.

Back in the mid or early 90's there was theMcdermott event at the Sands in Vegas. I was up with a short guy named Itule and rReed was to play a buddy of mine from Denver named Henry Granis.

Henry could be a bit squeirrly, but the guy played pretty good. Amy wasy, they are about to forfeit Henry when he comes running in all out of breath, but he made it/ Reed had just put his money in the table when Henry asked if he could hit a few. Reed gave a rather puzzeled look, but said sure. Henry knocked em off and Reed reached in hiis pocket pulled out a coin and said call it. The coind hit the table and instead of calling it Henry asked him if he had a tapper. Reed said sure, reached in hi8s case and handed it to Henry. Reed held the coind high as if to flip and Henry notice3d Reed had just bought a roll of quarters. Henry asked if he could buy half the roll from him and Reed looked again, a bit puzzeled and said sure and counted them out. Reed for a third taime held the coin out ready to flip and again Henry stopped him asked Reed if he had any powder. Reed again, said, SURE. He handed Henry a bottle of powder and Henry asked him where he was going and Reed responded, to get something to drink and asked Henry if he would like something and Henry replied coffee. Reed said, You guessed it, SURE. Everyone around is falling off their seats alughing by now and even Reed seemed amused by the whole thing. Well, Reed comes back with a drink and Henry's coffee, and patiently observed Henry preparing his coffee. You got it, Reed held out the coin and Henry asked, do you mind if I flip it. Reed cracked up and said,,,,,,,SURE. Henry won the flip and was about to break when Reed abruptly stopped hime. Reed laid his cue on the table ran over to Henry and stuffed his shirt tail into his pants. Everyone is just rolling now. Henry said thanks and made it on the pop. You got it, Reed shouts, SURE.
I guess you would have to have been there but, it was a very funny episode. Reed ended uup winning the match and playing real well.
We all go to the coffee shop late to get something and Reed is sitting there and I lead us to a table right beside Reed. He takes one look at Henry and cracks up. We all sat there laughing for quite a whild and the waitress brings the check and Henry holds his high in the air and yells hey Reed. Reed looked at him and everyone around just blew up as Reed says not in your life buddy. Henry lets out a sigh and says SURE.

I value $Bills opinion a lot, and wouldnn't pretend to know more about Reed than he, but Reed is a natural player and if he really wanted it, he would be ready in less than 4 months, Toomuch natural talent. But, on the other hand $Bill should know and priorties do change. Once you leave this game, it is never quite the same.
