Rep Points -- I'm still confused.

I know this subject has been covered in the past, but still....

I started on AZB about four years ago. Can't remember whether rep even existed then, but I didn't figure it out for quite a while. I don't do other discussion boards besides this one, so I don't know how they work.

At some point I began noticing the greenies attached to the avatars, and later I noticed that I had but one. Once I got two, that pleased me, and I figured out how to explain it. Month by month, I earned more greenies, until after a year or so I had a full boat of 11.

But now, I notice that AZers with no more than a couple posts can carry a full boat of greens. How does that work? The other day I gave a guy some rep for a very nice introductory post, and shazam! he had a full load of greens.

Actually, I enjoyed earning mine one by one, and I don't understand how the system has changed to make this happen. Did the recent software upgrades do this, or is it something beyond my notice?

Thanks for your interest.

vbulletin has encorporated a complicated power system in an effort to make REP fair (if you have an old board, azbilliards for instance, it might take 10,000 posts to get 11 bars of rep......so new members NEVER really see rep increases.......if you have a new board, same problem, for the first few years no one will have all positive/negative rep)...

soooo, as time goes on, rep gets inflated.....if the board administrator does not alter the math attributes for rep in vbulletin, rep goes into hyperinflation.

the top rep getters here should have in the millions of points by now....it doesnt mean they have gotten that many "rep" hits, in fact, probably only a very small fraction of it.

I have just under 14,000,000. I am guessing the guys at the top are over 30,000,000 by now.

it has outgrown it's initial intent..

the squares need to be worth more..

it has truly gotten to the point that if a person on the top 10 rep pages gives green to a person with 1 post..

that 1 post person has the ability to fill all the squares of another person with 1 post...

my first year here was fun .. trying to contribute real content to the forum... working my way up... earning respect... the green dots were a reflection of contribution..

I miss that...

now it's just a green line under your name...

kinda useless...

Thought i'd subscribe to this thread, who nose, i might learn somthin

From what I understand the amount of points you can give is about 1% of what you have. So anyone with less than 100 points will only be able to give grey reps. If I remember correctly it takes 2 or 3000 points to get 11 squares.

Since so many people have over 300,000 only one rep comment is neccessary. Nowadays whenever I get repped by someone at the top, I get around 100,000 points. When I started on the forum, the top people were able to dish out 50-70 points at a time. It took most of us months to get 11 squares.

I thought it was silly 4 years ago, I still think it's silly. Though I do appreciate the comments people leave.

No one has more than 6 greenies. If you go to "Community" then "Members List" and then sort by reputation, even the top ranked poster only has 6 greenies. I think it's an issue when the server was moved over, similar to how the member info pages weren't working until recently.

The greenies have always been that way. 5 dark green and 6 light green.

I do however really enjoy the messages that accompany the rep

Agreed, that's where you find the value.

the points have gone into hyperinflation
with the passing of Smorgassbored :frown:

just like US Currency has gone into
hyperinflation with the passing of the
gold standard.

There was a time I was number 4 on the
1st rep page with only 52,xxx points
(late last year actually)

Page 1 read at that time:

Smorgassbored
Fatboy
Ribdoner
Asiasdad

now I'm somewhere on page 2 or 3 with

4,669,776 point(s) total

so that gives you an idea of the
hyperinflation that has happened
through the process of several on
top of the rep board continuing to
play the "rep rotation" game among
themselves.

Consider it the equivalent of
a massive circle jerk.

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:
:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: X 2 (the approximate number of folks
you have to jack off to get back to the first guy you jacked off again -
that is about 2 days worth of jackin' off per circle jerk)

those of us with sore d!cks are no longer
on page one.

Asiasdad,

Good analogy! HAHA!

I have a lot of rep and all, but it really doesn't count for sh*t. It is nice and all, but to many people seem to take part in the massive circle jerk. When someone with less then 200 posts is above people like Jay Helfert, SJM, Blackjack, KentB, etc, the system is kind of messed. Not saying some of these people don't deserve a lot of rep, I just don't know how they could get so much in such a short period.

Sometimes I will get the 'have to spread some rep around' message, and I will have to wait a few days before I can give rep to that person. Sometimes, I get rep from the same people two days in a row. How is this even possible, because you have a limit on how many people you can rep in 24 hours.

Thanks guys

OK, I think I've come to an understanding. Rep inflation is apparently the key. Too bad, because as one of you mentioned, the old rep system gave us incentive to add valuable content to the site, and a disincentive to go negative.

I thought it was hilarious when cuetechsaurus campaigned for all reds in exchange from greens. Yet now even he's gone green, and it's totally rare to see anyone with red.

I gave red a couple times on the NPR board to guys I thought were morons, but now I always give green, even if I deliver a rebuke in the message. That way it stays private and does no damage.

Anyway, it's a strange topic. What this has to do with pool, I can't really say. You must be a banger if you don't got all greens, huh?

Anyway, anyone with fewer rep points than I have gets the six and out -- but only on my table! Cheers.

Don't get me started

about rep. The original intent was to 'reward' a poster who had provided good information and insight about a Pool subject, and that benefited the masses of posters on the board. To my way of thinking, only about 1 out of 100 posts would deserve some good rep.

It has been reduced to being a popularity thing, and is useless for any real meaning now. Some posters would 'buddy up' with others on here, and they would take turns giving each other good rep when it was not deserved.

It seems to me that a user should be able to rep a post with one point. The number of reps to that post would be added to a user's cumulative total. In such a system the greens would take on meaning and the poster could see which of his or her comments were thought to be useful.

The option of commenting to the poster on the post is also of use.

I totally agree. I was once #1 before Smorgy and now it is just a free for all. I am proud that I got every point of mine by trying to contribute meaningful or humorous information, not by kissing someone's behind, but that's what it seems to be today. It has even taken off some of the enthusiasm for posting I once had, seeing some of the characters that passed me, so it doesn't mean what it once did.

That isn't why I haven't been around though, so don't get me wrong. Too much of Life intruding!

I do like the rep comments I get though.

So your saying that rep points should only be a standard number instead of a percentage of what you have?

I just tried to give myself a rep and got this reply from the system.

This post has not received any reputation. You currently have 3419710 reputation point(s)

Maybe rep should be more arithmetic than geometric. You accumulate reputation one post at a time. If 20 people rep you, you have 20 rep points.

I'm gonna try that cos I can never figure out how many I got. Just interested.

From what I read awhile back when I first joined, is that the more rep points you have the more potential banning power you have. You can petition to have someone banned who has less rep points then you to the mods...not sure if this is true or not, could be a stupid post I read that I should have red repped them, or even myself for believing it lol.
