Ron Thomas Case Lid Too Tight - Any Suggestions?

good morning, az.

just acquired a very nice Ron Thomas case with a pull off friction type lid and it requires darn near gorilla strength to remove.

So before bugging Mr. Thomas with this I figured someone here might have a good suggestion for me.

Basically, I thought maybe some kind of silicone spray or similar might do the trick but, again, I'm thinking some of you may have already encountered this and found a solution.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

TIA

best,

My suggestion, be generous and give it to someone a little stronger than you. I can PM my address if necessary.

P.S. Christmas is 40 days away and New Years only 46.

Does it have the o-ring or d-ring? If so, I had an Engles case where somebody had replace it with the wrong size o-ring. Once I replaced it it worked fine.

You might try waxing both sides. If that doesn't work Lowe's sells a bottle of dry teflon (teflon particles in a liquid). Shake the bottle well because the teflon particles settle out and then apply (again to both sides). Give it a minute or so for the liquid to evaporate which leaves a thin layer of dry teflon. This worked for me when I had a tight joint on a cue stick. I checked my GTF case and it doesn't have a gasket but that suggestion sounds good if your case does. Hope this will fix it for you Chicken. By the way, your pool table and the room you have it in, is the nuts. Hope the water damage is long gone.

Don't get silicone spray anywhere near it. You don't want to get it on your cues.

I wiped some pledge furniture spray on one of mine (not a Thomas) that was very tight. It helped...but it's still tight.

Why not contact Mr. Thomas and ask him for a recommendation?

Maybe it needs an vacuum release valve. I'm assuming it's the vacuum and not the friction that holds it back.

Did you happen to shove a thicker-than-normal cue in there?

I have a couple Ron Thomas cases that I can not pull open. I have found that laying the case flat on the table, and sliding/pushing the top off, makes it easier to open.

Correct...........

Ron said to sand the button a little at a time, until it gets easier.

One time I bought a case from Ron at a show, maybe 10-12 years ago. The case I wanted to buy was stunning, but the lid was near impossible to remove.

Ron said to just sand the button a bit and the lid would come off easily, be careful not to sand too much.

I had a better idea. "Ron, why don`t you sand the button for me, and when the lid gets to the point where it is easy to remove, I will take it". He said that was very fair, that he had something in his hotel room that would work to sand the button.

For the next two days, every time I passed Ron`s booth, there he was sanding on my case button! Finally, it was done!

Ron is a good friend of mine, and makes very, very nice cases. I am sure he was being careful not to sand too much of the button away.

............And so should you be careful.

Sanding for 2 days? Was he sanding it with a piece of silk? :)

Doc, the big silicone fear is one that cuemakers have, because it can fish eye the finish as it is curing. After the cue is in the end user's hands, the silicone concern isn't that big of a deal. I wouldn't put silicone directly on the cue, especially if it would ever need to go back for refinishing, but a little on the lid of the case wouldn't be a big deal, in my opinion. The pledge furniture polish that you used had silicone in it, only their multipurpose cleaner (used for glass and electronics) doesn't have dimethicone.
