I had the pleasure to watch Rudolfo Luat play a set last evening with Ed Balderas. They raced to nine with Rudolfo giving some weight to Ed and Rudolfo did win. Rudolfo has one of the best strokes I have ever had the pleasure to see. Smooth does not even describe it WOW what a pool player he is. Very pleasent to speak with and what a talented player!! I will go out of my way to watch this great player at any oppurtunity!! They played at On Q in Elgin Il. Hats off to Tom Karabatsos and his new venture, had a great time just hanging out..

Are we thinking about the same Rudolfo Luat? Lol. I saw him play in person at one of the IPT qualifiers, and he has a very unorthodox stroke...similar to Keith's. In fact, I would describe it as downright ugly. Smooth?...maybe, but not very pretty.

But hey, he gets the job done. Many posters here say he has one of the more powerful strokes in pool if he really lets his stroke out.

Dan,
Thanks for the PM, much appreciated.

Luat is THE most under rated Fillipino ever. He consistantly finished high in majors and has kept his speed despite his age.
He won the World 9 Ball Championship in 1996 and is still a threat to send anybody to the left side.
I think he's a great player.

Luat is a great player, a champion, and a really nice guy! I think everything he does at the table is awesome.

Rudolfo was at Chris's and also at my hole-in-the-wall (Pressure, on Chicago's north side) over the past week, socializing and batting friendly balls around with the locals. If you were young and pretty he'd even miss a few for you (guess I'm not young enough).

His stroke is unorthodox, but the balls sure know where he wants 'em to go. He was hanging out with Ed Young, Dave Kersenbrock's partner, who tells me that Rudolfo goes back and forth with Efren for bragging rights in the Philippines. Rudolfo said he practices the same way Efren does: by tossing *two racks* of balls (that's thirty balls!) on the table and shooting them in rotation (1-1, 2-2, 3-3, etc.). Try THAT some time.

Some people will be scratching their heads here specially the instructors. :D

There are a lot of champions and road players both past and present that had unorthorox stokes. McCready and Hopkins come to mind quickly but there are plenty more. I never bought the "one stroke fits all *hit myself". If it feels good to you or her and it gets the job done...do it. Johnnyt

cuz of what i said or cuz of how he shoots?

lol i never said luat cant play, i mean he went to the finals last year at the open.......but you cant hold him up as the posterchild for mechanics, seems like i remember he kind of stands up way over the ball, his feet were all whoppyjawed and he kind of had a sidearm stroke and just held the cue with like 2 fingers on his backhand......worked great for him but i cant see trying to teach how he plays to anyone else

On how he shoots.

The most under rated player from the Philipines. He has been coming over here and winning for years. Has had problems in final matches and has many runner up finishes. But he has been a consistent top ten player for many years now. Last year he was second at Derby City and the Open.

He did win one big tournament I put on ten years ago. It was in Coeur D'Alene, Idaho. We had a big field of 273 players, with many big names. Rudy fought his way to the finals where he played young Alex P. And he took it down for $12,500. He played great all the way.

Soft spoken, Luat let's his cue to the talking for him.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder;) . Luat posseses one of the prettiest strokes out there. Though his stance and side arm are unorthodox, they are not his stroke.

Ya gotta know where to look.

Thanks for the links SCAR, some great shots in those matches.

I wish I had known that Eddie was playing Rodolfo last night as I work only a block away from Tom's new place here in Elgin. Really sorry I missed that.

AMEN to this statement!! His stance and sidearm shooting style was what I noticed also, but the cue ball rolls so smooth it is phenomenal. His cue seems level on almost all shots and his speed control was amazing. You can tear it down any way you like but he is truly a gentlemen to pay attention to. His stroke mechanics may not be textbook but they do not have to be. Just like many athletes have there own style he does also.

I agree with this guy. Its what you can do with the QB not how you look shooting the QB.

Question for ya Jay.....Why don't you run tournaments anymore?Too much work involved?Too little return in money?Just curious. It sounds like you had a good time doing them.

sheesh i never said the guy sucked or i could beat him or he isnt a gentleman or yadayadayadayadaaaaaa lol.....i was just agreeing with the original poster on how unorthodox he plays........if you go to a major event looking to learn something from how the pros play, other than position this would be the last guy id look at because he shoots so different from me and most everyone else id ever seen......its not a personal attack, all you have to do is watch the man shoot.

All of the above. Actually I am still available to run pool tournaments, if I am paid accordingly. I still think I'm one of the best at running a tournament smoothly. I am not "high profile" when I run an event. I don't try to wow the audience on the "mic".

I found out a long time ago, that if I do a good job I am almost invisible. The pool tournament is not about me. It is about the players! A seamless and orderly event is always my goal. And that is what I strive to make happen. A good TD makes quick decisions and keeps matches rolling. He handles problems quickly as well, not letting anything get out of hand. And most important he WATCHES the tournament! He is well aware of what is going on at all times.

I am proud of my record as a TD, with over 100 major tournaments under my belt. And I'm not done yet. Thanks for asking.
