Running out of steam...

Hi Guys,

I am an early riser (4:30) and play in a league. Last night I was shooting great for a while. But at some point I ran out of steam. Does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to keep going way past my bed time.

Oh, I have Diabetes (type 2), and they don't have coffee at the room I play league in (Iknow, it's unbeilevable not to have a coffee maker in a pool room).

Thanks guys and gals.

Pete

Maybe a nap in the afternoon of the league night if possible...or going to bed early the night before.

I've found that I play my best pool early in the morning.

Bring an apple (or any fruit) on league nite. The frutrose (organic sugar) is quick acting and gives you the desired 'pick-me-up' without the caffine.

I'm an early riser as well and I always ask my team captain to put me in the slot so I can be the first one to finish in the last round so I can go home as early as possible. I also like try to to make sure we start on time. :) My bedtime during the week is 9:00-9:30pm so staying at league past that is tough for me. I do try to take a nap after I get home from work for about an hour or so, and that seems to help. I also drink only water at league. The colder the better! I try not to drink anything with caffeine before bed.

Powerade make these energy gelpacks which you can get sugar free, there like a dollar each i like to keep stocked up at the house with them..whenever i start dragging i sit down for like 15 minutes smash one of those and drink some water, then i get back to work.

i'm in the same boat and i try to eat a decent dinner a little closer to when i am going to play. i also try to slot myself first or second and do all i can to make sure we start on time and keep things moving. i am also fortunate enough to play in rooms where we can split tables and play two matches at one time. the last tournament i played in started at ten in the morning and i didn't finish until almost nine at night. drink lots of water and try to eat a little healthy and it'll keep you going longer.

Sit down when not shooting every chance you get, and drink plenty of water.

Sugarfree Red Bull, it gives you wings................
Bad call for a 4.30 riser! You will find yourself in bed with your eyes wide open at 2.45 and you will say: FUKIN RED BULL!

Agreed- those gel packs are magic.

They can be purchased with or without caffiene, as well.

This happens to me a lot, and I think it is my body trying to tell me something. Probably something like this:

"Oi Grandpa - why don't you go to bed, you old git. You're playing rubbish and you're not going to get any better. In fact, you never could play any good. Why don't you just give up and stop embarassing yourself...etc, etc"

I don't mind, but I just wish my body could be more polite sometimes.

Pete,
They don't have coffee because they won't sell enough to keep it from going bad and they damn sure wouldn't give ANYTHING away.

I have the same problem in the same league, there are some damn slow players in that league and the format (1 game at a time per round) only stretch out the time. Unlimited timeouts doesn't help either. One time at the league banquet they gave me a small pillow and blanket as a gag gift. Actually I quite coffee about 6 months ago to see if it would help my blood pressure and I actually feel less tired, though still too tired after about 8:30/9:00.

How about no-doz? It is a pretty poor substitute for coffee, but better than nothing. I used to keep some in by cue case. I'm pretty sure the place sells Red Bull. I've taken to carrying my own water in, maybe you could carry some kind of caffienated drink though legally they aren't supposed to allow any carry-in breverage, I just buy the same brand water they sell.

In the end, don't forget it isn't really a pool room, it is a night club with pool tables.

I'm in the same boat as far as the early rising and league (no diabetes).

I prefer not to have caffine in the pm because it keeps me awake at night. So when I'm feeling especially wiped out, I'll do some stretching and walking around to get the blood moving a bit. If that's not working, I might play a video game to get some adrenalin flowing. As a last resort, I'll take one daytime cold pill. Wakes me up and if I only take one, the effects are short lived.

That's some REAL negative self-talk you got going on in your head. You'd be ahead if you took control of your thinking and told yourself something that will help you overcome feelings of inadequacy. We all have doubts. The ones who win are those who have learned to talk to themselves so as to be encouraged instead of discouraged. (dis is a prefix meaning; away from. Dis-courage... away from courage)

Positive self talk helped me stay sober those first few years. WE can!!

No coffee machine at the pool hall!! that's BS!

sounds like you should bring your own.

you know when i watched inside your case the jasmin oschean one. she had a sports carbohydrate gel thing in her bag. i don't know if that'll screw with your diabetes but it's something to think about

Some good advice here Pete. I like to eat a chocolate bar during breaks in a long poker tourney. Gives me a little boost of energy when I need it, and satisfies my craving for food. And I drink water all night, always have a bottle on hand.

I have type 2 as well and know all too well how you feel and dwhat you are talking about.

I also am an early riser, about 5:30 each day. The secret for me is how I eat and it has taken about 8 years to figure this out.

I don't play marathons anymore, because I just can't hang in there 8-9 hours tops and I'm done. Even then I have learned to take the little sack lunch with me. I sneak out to the car and choke down a quick sandwich and bananas. That has become my best solution. I feel for ya and wish I had more to offer. It's a crappy feeling.

meth and lots of it. just kidding.

The gel packs work. I sleep weird hours and sometimes I gotta be up for over 22 hours straight. I cant nap cause a 30min nap lasts like 3 hours. (i wont get up) So i either have a gel pack or a 5 hour energy shot. Be sure to take the energy shot early though so itll be wearin off about bed time.

I usually start drinking beer when I get down and need a few more hours. Three to four usually do the trick. If you have something against drinking I suggest the sports gel packs or doing some calistinics before hand its a much healthier option, and will get your blood pumping followed up by good hydration.

Beer is a depressant why would you start drinking when you get tired? ,sounds like the wrong thing to do here.
