Safety play resources

I'm looking for good sources to help my defensive play. Books, internet sites, videos, drills, safety battle clips, etc.

I have only been trying to play safe for a little while and i've noticed it's a huge weakness. I see a few safes, but I usually end up leaving my opponents wide open.

Thanks in advance for any resources or advice you have.

I have an entire section of my book tha deals specifically with safeties.

You can preview this section here -
Unlocking the Safe

The diagrams in the book are much larger and clearer - and there is much more information contained in this section.

You can purchase the book at the following link -

Lessons In 9 Ball

Two of the biggest things that help my safety game was learning the transfer of energy and the follow system.

Transferring energy: When you hit the cueball, its at 100%. If you hit the object ball with a full ball hit, you transfer 100% of the energy from the cueball to the object ball... stopping the cueball. A half ball hit transfers 50% energy and the cueball retains 50%... so they should travel the same distance. And so on... this should help with speed control.

Follow system: I personally find this system to be easier than trying to figure out 30 degrees or the peace sign thing. Understanding the exact path that the cueball will travel will dramatically help your safety game.

To use this system, find the line between the center of your object ball and center of the blocker ball (the solid red line). The red dot in the diagram on the object ball is your aim point. Aim directly for the red dot with follow. The cueball will follow directly to the blocker ball. From here, you just have to learn the proper speed and you can lock people up left and right. I know of a similar system for the exact path using draw... but draw is less predictable. But its setup a lot like this.

Try this out and your safety game should get much better quick. It did for me.

=)

HAHA he beat me too it.. Practice your follow\high english. If you notice most nut up safteys the player used follow. Listen to blackjack and Upscale 9 ball has a chapter about saftey play..

I have found this follow technique to work as well. It takes a little patience and practice, but what doesn't? Great post cleary!

Bert Kinister has anual compilation of the best safties that one pro games that year. on his tapes you can find many creative safties with his answer on how he thinks best to counter.

Also be on the look out for 2-way shots. 2-way shots are a combination of offense and defence in one shot.

For instants if your playing 9-ball and your faced with a bank shot (2 ball) in the cross side. You next ball (3 ball) is located on the bottom rail where there are a group of balls you can use as blockers while playing shape on the 3 ball.

You bank the 2 ball towards the side but control the cueball so that it hides behind the group of balls that are near you next shot on the 3 ball. If you miss the 2 ball and leave the cue ball behind the blockers your oppontent wont have a shot at the 2 ball. If you do make it you will have shape to make the 3 ball in one of the corners you played shape for.

Hope that can help ya

Pat Fleming's "The Creative Edge" is a great little instructional.
