Schmidt-Pagulayan DCC 14.1 Match - Retrospective Report (long)

BigJ,
I think I'm fairly safe as long as you don't tell him (he can't read; that third grade was a LONG 5 years for the break-man).

K,
Had you ever seen them play 14.1 prior to this? I am just thinking that no one in their right mind would bet on Alex. There is no way in the world he could beat JS with that wild straight pool game ..... errr ..... well ...... uhmmm .... maybe he had a small chance.
Yeah, maybe he had a chance after all.

I had never seen him hit a ball of straights and nobody wanted to bet his way. I was up about 1200 for the week betting matches so I figured I would throw a flier out there. I walked up just before the match and said "Who is betting on who?". Everybody in the stands wanted John if you remember and I bet on Alex just because I know his talent level and ball pocketing ability. I had no idea at the time how well JS played and I didn't know AP was considered that big of an underdog. I always bet quite a few matches at DCC taking the underdog and I have yet to book loser (for the week) in the 4 trips I have taken to Louisville.

K,
So you are a "contrarian." It can work well in the stock market, but can burn you in the pool hall at times. I had no idea of the relative merits of the players before the match. It only took about 3 racks to see that a very stark contrast in styles was present. See you at DCC.

LOL! That's exactly what I was thinking, and I kept going through to see if he had posted yet. I think I'll subscribe to this thread--its bound to end up being hilarious.

On a serious note though, much kudos and rep to Willie for that outstanding narrative! I was filled with suspense just reading it--I can only imagine what the air around that table was like! More pool players need to be exposed to the beauty of straight pool. Everything you can ask for in the game of pocket billiards is there!

Great post Willie, it's matchups like this that make the DCC such a great event. I wished I could've been there to see Pagulayan's display, he is without a doubt one of the great shotmakers of the modern era, I've seen him make shots on tight tables most players wouldn't even fathom. I guess that's the reason he is a world champion calibre player and I'm not;)

Hail-man,
I believe that Alex was interested enough in the game to work with Danny DiLiberto on some of the finer points (AFTER the famous DCC match-up). A few sessions with Danny D. (a TRUE old-school player, and TRUE 14.1 expert) would go a long way to improving anyone's game.

I agree with several on the 14.1 forum who believe that by far the most important skill in straight pool is pocketing ability. It's the reason JS would be the favorite over JL, even though her knowledge of the game is superior (JMO; but learning from Gene Nagy puts anyone WAY ahead of most competitors).
THANKS WILLIE, Really enjoyed the story!! Regards,Kennyratt

Great report Willie, much appreciated. Don't suppose any of this was captured on video was it?

Dan,
No video of which I am aware. I would certainly love a picture or two of the match if anyone has them.

VIP,
Since my flight to Vegas was 6 hours late, I missed meeting breakup (I had planned on administering another straight pool a$$-kicking). I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for his input into the thread, as I am fairly certain he still does not know how to read.

As far as the ultimate pool game - it HAS to be 14.1; you have good taste.

hi

great recap willie.the first night we played 200 points for 1000 i won 200-about 100.next game was 200 points for 3000 i won 200-about 160.third game 300 points for 4000 i lose 298-300 brutal.if i win that game hes stuck 8000 and were done he even said so.anyway the next night we play i have not slept yet because im so cracked about the night before.anyway we play to 300 points for 6000 he hits me with 111and 99 back to back to beat me 300 to about 170.so in closing after all that we are almost dead even on the ball count yet i lose 6000.that will teach me to raise the bet lol.by the way anyone who thinks alex dont play 14.1 believe me hes run many hundreds and has a high run of 180 last time we talked.the reason i feel we broke even on games is he handles money game pressure great and i feel that i played a little scared against him.im probably a much better practicer of 14.1 lol.its funny because all the 14.1 ive played is been almost always by myself no pressure.now all of a sudden im playing one of the greatest pressure players and i think i tried to hard.not to mention alex kept telling the crowd hes never played 14.1 to make me look bad .but i knew he had played tons of it for money so i was under alot of pressure because people thought i was stealing which i knew was not so.anyway i was the favorite but not by a huge amount and i will play him again if the situation comes up again.for the record hes a great player and i respect and like him .thats about as close as i remember all the details.by the way you want to know how many balls were lucked in and how many times the opponent had no shot if a ball was missed in 1000 points of 14.1 one just one .think about that for a minute .9ball with the rules we play now is such a joke compared to 14.1 its not even funny.i l think the rules should be gradys rules of 9ball or atleast rollout. well anyway talk to you guys later im going to watch a movie.

Alex plays great whenever he's in debt! the need to pay up is always his priority. some guys think just because they had beaten Alex or saw him got beaten initially , that he doesn't stand a chance anymore. this guy gets better in every match. it would be a mistake to underestimate his potential. winning a battle is nothing compared to winning a war. would you bet on saying that you could repeat the same feat over and over again?

I loved reading this and remembering how this great game used to be played Thanks and a rep to you!

JS,
Many thanks for your perspective on the match.

While Alex had a wide-open style; it was obvious that he could run balls. I didn't see much difference between you guys in shotmaking ability - I would think that your superior patterns would give you the edge in the long run.

I have always thought that practice and competitive play at 14.1 are VERY different things; it's nice to hear a pro confirm this view.

As you point out, "bad luck" can occur in any game including 14.1; but WAY less often in 14.1; it is definitely the true championship game. Good luck in the World tournament; we will be rooting for you.

A little "bump" for a great story. :) This is one of my favorites on AZ. Thanks for the report Williebetmore.

WOW!
That was a fantastic read.
I love pool!
Why can't this sport get the recognition it deserves?
