Scooter, Family Man and Best Hustler in America

What's wrong with both directions flourising?

Ray

Nothing is wrong with both directions flourishing. The conflict or tension, if you will, comes forth when peope are discussing their opinions about what will help propel pool forward. This is when the differences of opinion arise. Some feel action and gambling is hurting pool, and others feel robotic tournament soldiers playing mum pool is also keeping pool from flourishing.

To each their own, I say. I'm on the side of action and excitement and emoition helping move pool forward. I think emotionless tournament soldiers on TV does more harm to pool than the action, but that's my opinion. Everybody has one! :D

2 sides to this coin.

upside: Scooter is entertaining and this might make for good TV. He is one of the best woofers I've ever heard.

downside: Hustling is one of the big reasons that non-pool sponsors steer clear of pool. This series will be glorifying an aspect of pool that we desperately need to get rid of.

The reason pool does not have non pool sponsors is because it is boring and the most boring game is 9 ball, they never make a hard shot. If football was as boring as pool nobody would watch it. Someone is trying to bring some excitement to pool. Does anyone think corporate America gives a shit about morals.

With all the big hits in the NFL, the in your face slam dunks of the NBA, the 200mph NASCAR, leaves little room for a newcomer to billiards to watch a guy walk around a table and put 9 balls in a pocket. Specially when he is in a vest dressed like a waiter. Facts are facts, professional pool played in that manner is boring to the majority of the tv audience. They rather watch a guy wrestle a gator or a big muscle bound guy with tattoos kick someone in the face and put him in a choke hold.
Look at the popular reality shows, drama, drama, drama. The popular shows are where we watch people's lives spin out of control. Do you think a show where we watch SVB wake up early, eat a healthy breakfast, workout, go to Subway for lunch,
then practice for twelve hours would be good for pool? It would definatly cast a positive light on pool and the hard work it takes to be good, maybe even get some positive sponsor money, but the majority of today's viewing audience would be bored. They don't want to have to work that hard to make that little bit of money.
I would rather watch the excitement of the up and down rollercoaster ride of the underground scene and big money back n forth action. That's just me.
The Hustler helped the pool scence, pool players, and brought a lot of new money to all the poolhalls across America, TCOM did the same, it seems to me the more we try to clean it up over time, the less people are interested in it. It is a nitty, gritty, sometimes dangerous game and I for one like that. I would much rather watch Keith McCready, Minnesota Fats, Cornbread Red, Scott Frost, Danny Smith, Josh Roberts gamble, than I would like to watch Ralf Soque or Thorsten run 200 balls. That's just me.

I am with you all the way, can't stand to watch pool tournaments and I been playing 40 years

Does he match up with Fatboy for the season finale?

I don't know about Fatboy, but the Earthquake saw that promo and is licking his chops for that youngster to come by his way and play some. Bet it high and give the camera something to really look at. Old Guard versus New Guard. Let the games begin! :grin-square:

Grady Seasons has spoken.

Now that would be a great show Keith and Scooter. I loved watching Keith play because unlike other players something might happen.

I think that the promo trailer is done very well in all aspects of film making. I loved it.

I agree. But now you'll here, "This is what's wrong with pool".
If they wouldn't have screwed casino betting on pool up many years ago, pool would be on TV at least every weekend, which would have kept raising the purses and there would be more SVB's and Justin Bergman's. Take away the betting legal on Snooker and see how fast the purses fall. Johnnyt

Is there a thread that covers Casino betting on pool in the era you write of?
I'd like to read it, as I am only new (not so young:) pool player...

Looking for old threads don't work on my computer anymore. But you can start by looking up Buddy Hall. He is not the only guilty one, but more is written about him on the subject. Please, let's not turn this into a Buddy Hall thread...thank you. Johnnyt

The story I heard was the one major tournament that Mike LeBron won he was the biggest underdog and he won the tournament. Biggest mistake pool players ever made.

Could evolve into it's own event !
Hustlers vs Tournament players.

What would Keith have to spot scooter to make a game? I would think it was substantial after seeing a little of scooter playing.

Cool idea, but would never happen. You won't find the hustlers in a tournament and you'll never see the tourney players wouldn't bet a nickel so how the hell are we gonna keep score??? Lol. Ya know actually, all gambling is is a better way to keep score.

Gambling is the teacher. ;)
