Scott the Shot Smith RIP

RIP, Scott. He was everywhere doing matches at one time back in the ESPN days. Great one!!

Scott was definitely an ambassador for the game of pool. He was wonderful as an announcer. He is missed. Love and condolences to his family.

Bill, is Jr still around?
Last I saw him was right before he dropped out almost 30 yrs ago now. Bought him in a 9 ball auction. We were sitting at a table together.. Talked my head off about getting married and being a Jehova Witness. Then we went outside and smoked a joint...lol
Heard he moved to Texas right after and haven't seen or heard about him since.

I played at all 3 of Scott and Laura's pool rooms in Colorarado Springs over the years. I learned a lot about pool life from him. After I moved here he would visit when he came through Ky on occasion or I would see him at a local event around here. I have quite a few cool memories of him. He will be missed.

We've had lots of great TDs but Scott was definitely my favorite. Style and class. His player intros were second to none, as others have mentioned. My personal story isn't massive but its stuck with me all these years. It was the 05 or 06 Derby at Exec West. It was late in the 9 ball and I was new to watching pro pool, trying to absorb every match I could. I saw the next rounds draw go up on the wall, Archer vs Reyes. An absolute must see. Seats at the Exec West were at a premium. I quickly walked over to Scott and quietly asked if he could tell me which table he would be putting them on with a big grin on my face. He clicked his mic off and looked around, "table 4" he said grinning back at me. I ran to the seats like it was Christmas morning, able to get front and center since the matches hadn't been called out yet. My smile was a mile wide as everyone crowded behind me after hearing Scott's voice over the speakers. Thanks for giving a young kid the heads up, Scott :) RIP

Some things you never forget. My first pro event was the 2005 US Open. I won one, lost one, won one, and was now playing Danny Basavich to get into the money.

Cutting to the important part it went hill-hill and I was breaking. Before the break Scott Smith gets on the microphone and says to the audience "Ladies and gentleman, I'd like to call your attention to table 16 where we have Demetrius Jelatis versus Danny 'Kid Delicious' Basavich. The score is 10-10, loser's bracket action, SOMEONE'S GOING HOME!"

I got the win and it meant so much to me but that's not what this story is about. What matters is how much drama and energy he brought to the matches. Even when he was in a serious role he always had a smile lurking under the surface. He was just amazing. RIP Scott.

When the CamelTour was in Tulsa in '99 i gave Scott a really nice Fuente cigar. He was real appreciative. Great guy.

I have a small collection of images from that event.

Thx Tin Man.
Scott the Shot, that's how he rolled, and why I said he was BETTER that the boxing announcer saying ''lets get ready to rumble''.
Why?
Because I've heard smitty say that same Exact phrase in match play with better inflection.
GREAT on the Microphone and much better at ''being in the moment'' that most ANY announcer in Any sport.

What an awesome guy. We played cheap pool for about 11 years. Learned volumes from him from 1992 to 2003. His personality and charisma were second to none. When be told a story, you were glued. Stand up guy. You will be missed old friend. I'll play you again when I get there. My prayers.

Just up in the Springs today/family/grandkids and stopped and visited with a close friend/lifelong friend of Scotts. He's gonna put together something so we can pay for his cremation and I'll post to his link or?
When that happens I'll give you his link, probably a tournament of somekind and post it here on AZ and One pocket .org and FB.

In my opinion, Scott Smith is worthy of Billiards Congress of AMERICA -- yes, it is AMERICA -- Hall of Fame nomination. He's contributed more to AMERICAN pool than most. You couldn't go to a major event in USA without Scott keeping things organized and doing it with humor, class, and style.

Nice idea.... I just emailed Shane Tyree/BCA about putting him on the ballot/industry award?

I enjoyed Scott with his humort and quick wit and I mirror the opinions of many here who thought he was the best emcee / TD in the business. I'll miss his porcupine hairdo and big toothy smile.

A good friend (AZ Member boradriver) and I were talking about Scott yesterday and he said that he got a real kick out of how Scott would show up at the star of the day all starched and creased and shined up then as the day went on his jacket disappeared, then the tie, the vest, then the shirt sleeves got rolled up then his official duties ended and he would start playing then one button then another...

He loved pool, being around it, its people and playing.

He was one of us.

RIP Scott.
