Seeking advice on use of 4.5 by 9 table in 13 by 13 space

Sadly the nearby pool hall is going out of business but I do have the opportunity to buy the 4.5 by 9 table I regularly practice on. The only room I have for it, though, is one measuring 13 by 13 ft.

I realize that this is not enough for a game table but what about for a practice table? Is this a bad idea? Anyone have advice about use of a table for drills and other practice in a much smaller than ideal-size room?

Thanks,
Brian

It's close to wide enough but not even close to being long enough. You generally want the table size plus 10 feet (5 feet on each side for the cue). So for a 4.5X9 you want about 14.5 X 19. With 13 feet lengthwise you will only have about a foot on each end. You might not even be able to walk around the table. Let alone shoot from within 3 feet of the rail.

That is a much smaller room than ideal but if it was my only option I would get it. 99.5 percent of my home table use is just me practicing. IF it was my only option, I would do it to be able to hit balls. I might even consider putting it all the way in 1 corner.

Its not a great option, but again, if I have no other choice I would do it.

you want advice on that?????

Don't do it, it ain't worth it....

This....13x13 won't work for any table...put it in a corner, you can still practice a ton of shots, banks, and so on.....better than nothing, and a 13x13 won't even work for a bar table IMHO....

Corner

If you put it in the corner, how would you get the balls out of the opposite side pocket without crawling over the table? I guess it could be a ball return model..anyway just a bad idea all around man.

DON'T DO IT!!!!

Either get a smaller table or just wait till you have a home with a big enough room for the 9 footer. I honestly think you would be miserable in such a cramped space.

I have a friend who had a ball-return Anniversary. He had the same problem. He used one end and one side and hit balls every night before
sleeping. When he sold it his game went down two balls.
So get it.If it's not ball-return,cut the bottom out of the 2 pockets
you can't reach and use some PVC.
...And start making plans for your new room

This video may help you visualize it.

That's a classic! And your room is going to make the one in that video look spacious. But, since no table is going to work in it, and assuming you get a great deal on the 9'er, and assuming someday you'll move to a place where you get ample room, then tuck it in the corner like others have suggested. It's better than a stick in the eye... errr, bad analogy...

Just put the table on Wheels. Then you can just push it slowly back and forth to be able to reach the ends. Or put it on rails that you can slide it back and forth.

But in honesty, I wouldn't do it.

Thanks to all of you who kindly responded to my question.

I like the idea of putting the practice table in one corner of the room as suggested by Xianmacx and Big Perm. That raises the issue of how to get the balls out of the far side pocket as mrsmith1976 mentioned, and out of the far corner pocket too. I am leaning to the solution suggested by pt109: “cut the bottom out of the 2 pockets you can't reach and use some PVC.”

The suggestion of APA Gene about a smaller table made me think that even with table wedged into the corner shooting from the end rail is going to be a bit restricted with a 9 ft table and a 13 ft room. I could have the wall moved back a few feet – it’s not holding anything up – or I could consider a bar table instead. Or I could take the deal on the 9 footer, accept the limitations, and maybe in the future find a better place for it, as suggested by KoolKat9Lives. Decisions, decisions.

I also appreciate the comments saying that it’s a bad idea, and had a good laugh from the Kramer video link posted by ctyhntr with the quip: “This video may help you visualize it”!

that was my answer for you . shove it in the corner & shoot drills.
an hour of drills a day at home can beat three hours of games at the hall , & it's way cheaper . . .

the only "smaller table" that will work in a 13x13 is bumper pool ...............

Do you have a covered area outside?

If you keep the table covered between use it should be fine.

Table.

I could have the wall moved back a few feet – it’s not holding anything up. [/QUOTE]
If it's not holding anything up than take it out problem solved.

The total length of a 9 foot Gold Crown is 9.4 feet. So the end of the short rail would be about 3.5 feet from the wall, with the other end very close to a wall. The width wouldn't be a problem if you place the table not farther than a couple of feet from a wall. That would be enough room to get to and empty to corner pocket. Doing this you would be able to shoot anywhere on one side only and you could only practice lengthwise shots if you place the cue ball in from the cushion about foot or so from the end rail. If you could buy the table cheap enough, I'd go for it. Especially if you have access to a pool hall to shot real games on, sometimes. If you buy it, it needs to be properly delivered and set-up by an expert, as though it were being put in a proper sized room. It may need new cloth and rubber. It can get expensive. I hope this helps. If the table isn't level and has bad cloth and/or rubber, practicing on it would only throw you off when you get on good conditions. Good luck.

I'd move. Every home I bought had room for a 9 footer. There was a 10 foot snooker table in my current house before I bought it.

DO IT!

Put it in a corner and enjoy it. Of course it's less than you 'd like but you can still enjoy the hell out it and be able to get meaningful practice.
