I make the statement without any reservations. Evidence:

1. He is bar none the best 10 ball player.
2. He is most likely the best 9 ball player.
3. There is no one else to even talk about in 8 ball.
4. He is the favorite to win any bar table event.
5. He won the DCC One Pocket and has placed in top 20 more than once.
6. He doesn't play straight pool, but I don't believe anyone under Mika, Harriman, or Schmidt want to try him any.

Please feel free to say I'm an idiot, but then explain why your player will not play Shane even at anything other than their one game of choice. I don't believe any American player is favorite over Shane in more than one of the games listed above and he would be favorite in 6 out of 6 over all but a couple players in their favorite discipline (ex: Frost in 1p, Schmidt in straight pool).

Edit: I am writing this because of a discussion about Shane/Johnny. It is my feeling after playing on this tight table that Shane should just go play Johnny in his room and take off anyone who is willing to bet.

No argument here. Got to agree.

He is the best 10 ball player on a 9 footer.

sorry, couldn't help myself.

I agree that he is the best all round player at this time.
Also, one of the most enjoyable to watch.

I think he deserves to be called the best American player at this time. I still would like to see him match up with Archer playing ten ball. What would the line be on that match?

From what I've seen recently Archer is still breaking them really good. I think with the magic rack the break is the key variable that separates these great players. I would think Archer could still hang with him but I'm not certain. Unfortunately, if what I've read on here is true there isn't much chance of them playing each other any time soon.:frown:

Shane, the person!!!

I know this thread is about Shane, the player. However, I want to share a true story about Shane, the person.

At this last Derby, a customer of mine came to me and said he was going to play Shane for $$$ ($100 or $200 per set, not exactly sure how much. Maybe he can confirm it here.).

"How do you guys match up?", I asked, not knowing how he plays but knowing that most collectors are short-stop players at best.

"I am going to give him the Wild 8", he said. I told him he was stone-cold stealing, emptied my pocket which contained about $1 or $2, and told him I was in with him.

Several hours later, he came back and was all smiles. He said Shane was taken aback but politely agreed to the game. After the first game, Shane was in full teaching mode. Shane was sharing the mental aspect of the game, what he was thinking, what was going through his mind...etc. He took time and answered all the questions my client was asking. He was giving invaluable mental lessons in the game of pool to 1 of his many fans as well as providing an experience that my client would remember for the rest of his life. It was the best few hundred dollars that my client ever spent on the game of pool.

By the way, Shane told my client to give me all my money back (the full $1 or $2). How cool is that?

You are exactly right. So far, Johnny has said he will only play Shane in his room on his table. Shane's backer agreed but that they would have to have a rematch on ANY Diamond table ANYWHERE is they lost. I don't believe they could have been any more fair.

AT LEAST JOHNNY IS NOT WILLING TO PULL THE EARL/MIKE GULYASSY MOVE AND JUST SAY THAT HE WOULD GIVE A REMATCH.

Svb

Now thats cool!! If we had more of that in pool, we would have a much better sport!!

SVB vs Archer....., dont know, if its a race to....., 20 I like Archer..., if he has to fade SVB for two or three days, not sur he can get there?

I am not sure that TAR could fade the amount of time it would take for Archer to play a race to 100. Maybe they could shoot it and edit out all the cleaning and cloth picking.

If Johnny plays Alex any time soon I will bet on Alex so I guess it goes without saying who I think would win between Shane and Johnny.

Didn't Earl beat both Shane and Johnny for the ca$h?

If Earl plays Shane again anywhere else on planet Earth on any table other than the one they played on, you don't have to look anywhere but here for a sucker. I will bet any amount I can reasonably come up with if they play again.

This is not to bark at you or anything, just questionning whether you really believe Earl is currently a better player than Shane.

Earl is CAPABLE of playing pool better than anyone on earth...

Earl is definitely still capable of the best play on earth...

The question is can he show up with that mind set or will he implode like he has been so want to do of late???

SVB is probably the best ten ball player anywhere right now, he is also one of the best all around players right now too...

If he starts playing some straight pool, people better watch out.

It was an airtight argument six months ago, so why wouldn't it be now? Shane is America's best pool player. If anyone had any doubts about it, those doubts would have been erased at Derby City. It also merits mention that Shane is the only American player enjoying significant success in overseas events having large, elite, internaitonal fields.

Does best = winning?

SVB the best American player, yea..., but does he have to beat Archer in a race to anything.., no! I mean the kid is strong aint no doubt, but in a controled enviorment where its just those two????

Archer might take it off...., baby needs shoes!!

I dunno who would win. (Johnny vs SVB) But I am damn sure that it is one of the few match-ups I would pay to watch live. I hope TAR will make a race to 100 for them.

After what Shane accomplished against Alex on a table with 4 1/8" pockets there can be no question. He ran 7 racks to end the second day and then won 6 straight to start the 3rd day. Any questions

Archer is still Archer.
Player of the 90s and now, 20 years later, he plays even better.
Any questions :p

Yes I have a question. What do you think the line would be in a race to 100 between Shane and Archer? I would like to bet that if it ever happens that when the match starts the bettors are giving up games on Shane.

The American player I'd like to see him matched up against is Morris. If not Morris, then a re-match with Earl or Deuel

No doubt he's the best US player right now. And congrats for winning TAR 21.
