Short people?

Are there any other short pool players here?

Im 5 foot 2 inches and when I use a full sized cue it feels way too long. When I use a kiddy cue it feels too short and I cant reach a lot of shots without a granny stick.

Im not a real experienced player but I enjoy the game and Im sure somebody has experienced this besides me.

Thanks in advance.

Im 5'1"

I use a regular size cue. I dont seen to have any problems. But let me give you some advice. Practice,Practice with the bridge. It will be mandatory to become a pro with it. Using the bridge is like another shot to me. I have spent alot of time with it, and it has payed off.

i'm not an expert on this but one thing to consider is the weight of your cue. lighter is better for a small woman. one because you aren't as strong as a man but also because of where you grip the cue.

because you're smaller your grip hand should be further away from the butt - which means you don't want loads of weight behind your grip hand.

just something to consider, others will no doubt chime in!

Not for nothing, but some of the best Filipino players are not all that high in stature. Don't ever let being a shorter person be an excuse for poor play!

Me, I'm six foot and have my own valid excuses for poor play!@#

I'd answer, but Randy Newman already said it best.

Nah, I'm kidding, I'm sure you have a reason to live. For your cue, try to find one that has a forward balance. Your grip hand will be pretty far from the butt of the cue as worriedbeef pointed out, and a balance point too far back will cause the tip to rise unintentionally if you use an open bridge. Apart from that, it doesn't matter if there's several inches of extra cue behind where you grip it. As long as the balance feels right, you can use a full cue with no problems.

i'm 5"4 and i use a standard length cue. i guess i'm just used to it. i've also used a 59" cue that i liked (just lengthened my bridge). to tell you the truth though i ordered a gilbert that was 57 inches and it feels natural. all in all i think i prefer a slightly longer cue anyway for the hard to reach shots. i always think i'm like 6 food something when i play shape. the extra length helps me stretch and still make the shot

you might have to have something custom made. try a fewer cheaper sneakys at different lengths to find out what works for you. remember though if they change the length of the cue and keep the joint size the same the cue will stiffen up.

FWIW, my wife Ortelia is 4'10" - you're tall by comparison. She uses a standard size cue with no problem. You'll get used to it.

Yes, that makes sense

I play with a 18.2. The weight is slightly forward. Butt heavy cues dont feel right to me. I have taught myself to grip where you are suppose to.
My stroke is pretty long. Sometimes it get me into trouble. lol
Taming my stroke when I play on 7 footers is always difficult for me.

I'm 5'1 and I have never had any problems either... my body seems to adjust well to whatever cue is in my hands. And my personal cue is full-sized. Usually, if the cueball is further than the halfway point of the table, I will need to try it from the side or use the bridge. But I don't find it comes up THAT much more often than most people.

There

some cues made that are 52" in length, 6" shorter.

The problem for short people (I am 5'7") with a longer cue is that their form can sometimes suffer because of how they grip the cue (like ending up using a 14" bridge when 9 or 10" would be used normally, or putting their grip hand not vertical, but further back which affects trueness of their stroke, or to have an inordinate amount of weight behind their grip hand which also affects stroke). These things would probably be more difficult for a woman to overcome.

I would suggest patterning your stroke and play after: Ga Young or X Pan.
They both have excellent strokes, both are petite short women, and both break the balls well.

I'm a 5'4" male and use a standard Lucasi 19.5oz cue. I think being short works to my advantage. Only 2 days ago I was playing a couple of friends and one of them said "this ain't fair, he doesn't have to bend over as far as we do". I chuckled and kept on beating them until they gave up. Some people don't respect short people, others know different.

What a great thread. Now I feel rather tall at 5'6" :D I too use a 58" cue.

Dave

<edited 'cause I didn't know how long my cue was, how embarassing>

I am 5 foot 6 on a good day at a high altitude. I use a 59 inch cue, 1 inch longer then normal. I like the extra length and can reach alot of shots I would not be able to reach with a 58 inch cue. I don't think I would ever go back to a standard length 58 inch cue. The taller people of the world can actually reach the shots easier with a normal length cue, that extra length helps me alot more then it would help them, you just need to be able to shoot with a fairly long bridge.

Hey guys I'm 5 6 and i have a Black Boar standert size cue. But what i found out was that most pros do they can shoot with ether arm or with a bridge so i practice that all the time

I'm 5'1 and have always used a regular cue. What has helped me was teaching myself how to play left handed. It helps in a lot of spots that using the bridge can be awkward.

Be careful if you decide to wear heels to play, it can throw things off for awhile.

I cant stress enough that practice, practice, with the bridge will make it so much easier to play well. Drawing, sidespin, follow, they are all possible if you work on it.

Thanks to everyone.

I probably do need to get my own own cue.

My husbands predator feels like its pretty butt heavy and I use his hand me down viking which feels the same.

I think they are both 19.5 ounces.

When he gets home Im going to ask him to adjust the weight. I know he knows how cause Ive watched him fuss with them.
