What's the difference between the two?
I realize the road player goes all over but what is the reason for being called a shortstop? Where do they fall in the order of being below the pro's ?
I see them mentioned quite often and don't know why.

Most shortstops are considered good regional players. They play better than the average joe, and even a lot of serious players in the area, but can't quite cut the mustard with the big boys. Several shortstops turn into pros if the desire is there.

I see the term 'shortstop' defining the technical skill of a player--speed's just shy of professional consistency.

The term 'roadplayer', or at least a good one at that, says to me someone of equal or higher skill of a shortstop, paired with the knowledge, heart, and street smarts (getting a good game, not being able to be sharked, rounding a room) that only experience and travel can provide.

2 cents, of course.

Some road players are shortstops, but good ones who know how to match up. Some of the biggest earners among gamblers are not necessarily the best players.

What's the difference? One is on the highway. The other is on an exit.

Fred <~~~ IMO

Like Jay said the best road players arent always the best players. They just just know how to match up better than most therefore winning more matches.

Shortstops are top players that when the moment is right turn it up to world class imo

je54,

Many years ago I asked Larry Hubbart, while he still lived in Rochester, that question. His answer? "Look in the mirror". His explaination was the local money makes a "shortstop" (me) on it's way to the pro / road warrior visiting your city. Pretty accurate.

I kinda look at it like this

Pro
Open-Shortstop
AA
A

as far as ratings go.....

Its kinda tough to explain or say this guy is a shortstop, like alot of people would say Stevie Moore usta be a shortstop, and I think he's upto Pro status.

Jason Kirkwood is in that same area as Stevie.... Yes Jason can play with the best of them..... And he could be "pro" status idk it kinda depends...

Richie Richardson is probably a good example of what a shortstop is.....

Adam Smith too, John Binion, Lil Jon,

A roadplayer is just someone who can match up well vs anyone, IE getting a spot or w/e and walk away with the $$

Which brings to mind money and pool...Its not about how good you play, necessarily, it is about how good you match up and perform accordingly.

Most good road players should be able to beat most local shortstops..If not he should go back to his hometown and be local shortstop till game improves.

Shortstop indicates level of play, a notch below pro. Road player is a guy who travels the country making a living playing pool. The two terms are not interchangeable because not all shortstops go on the road and not all road players are shortstop speed.

A long time ago Bucktooth told me that it isn't about how good you are, but knowing how good you are in relation to who you match up with. Two of the most successful gamblers I knew were no better then high B- low A players who never let their ego get in the way of their gambling.

Those were wise words !

I just told a freind of mine last night the same exact thing. He's a go off artist who lets his ego make his bets for him. I told him if he wanted to win he needed to bet with his head not his ego. I agree with Houmatroy, those are very wise words you posted.

Hopefully he dont listen though I take alot of that cash
