should I feel bad?

I was playing in my scotch doubles summer league last night and my

partner had left me hooked to where i had to kick at one of our balls but

clearly hit the other teams ball first and fouled but i didnt say any thing

and just went and sat in my chair and waited for the other team to shoot.

I guess they were to busy talking to eachother and they didnt notice the

foul or even care to ask if it was a foul and they just shot. Should I have

said something since they werent paying attention or did what i did and

just not say anything?

What would you have done?

Personally, I would have told them that I commited a foul, but you'll get about a 50/50 ratio that say otherwise. Yes, they SHOULD have been paying attention but,,,,,,,,,,,,,,what would you have wanted THEM to do if the shoe was on the other foot? Whatever your answer is (in all truthfulness), is what you should have done.

I wouldn't lose any sleep over it though.

If I foul, I call it. When my opponent isn't looking, I usually pick up the cueball, walk over and hand it to him. That way there is no ambiguity on if he is playing it as it lies when he comes back to the table.

Personally, I don't want to win if it is by me not calling a foul on myself. I have only not called a foul on myself one time. It was in a tournament and I double tapped the cueball. To this day I still feel like a piece of shit for not calling that foul.

Yeah, definitely call your own. The fact that you're still thinking about it means you do value your integrity, and I'm sure you aren't really wondering if you should feel bad about it, because you know you do.

Now, if the people you were playing were assholes, then I wouldn't feel all that badly about it, but I'm pretty sure I've only had one person call a foul on me before I called it on myself in three years of league/tournament pool.

the reality of life is that whether or not you call that foul will depend on what stakes you're playing for . As the jeopardy of loss increases ,the probability of calling your own foul decreases.
The converse , of course , is that as the stakes get higher , your opponent will be watching more closely .
So , it all evens out in the end !

i didnt call it cuz i feel thats its not really cheating or anything because its

not my fault that they were more concerned about their conversation then

the game and its not my resposibility to call fouls that they miss when

they are supposed to be watching the game. As long

as there isnt any real cheating going on ( moving balls around by hand or

pocketing balls by hand) im starting to think that the opposing player(s)

should call fouls. But thats just me lol

I'd like to say that I always admit to such a foul, but that would not be accurate. What about when you're not sure if you fouled? What if you're playing someone you bends the rules, sharks, or denies obvious fouls?
Not long ago, I committed a foul in league (admittedly a close call), and did not call the foul. My opponent was an aspiring young player who took the game seriously, but was not watching the game except when she was at the table. When her teammates said they thought I fouled, she threw a fit. I politely told her that it's her responsibility to watch the game, but then did give her BIH. I thought the brief confrontation was a good lesson for her. Was I wrong in letting my teaching enter into the game?

Honesty is it's own reward. Doesn't matter who the opponent is.

So I asked this question of the tournament director. He said to remember even when not playing a refereed match there is always a referee at the match. It is your opponents job to call fouls on you and yours to be honest that a foul was committed when called.

Just to let you know when not playing in tournament or leauge play I do offer the cue ball to my opponent when I commit a foul. But it is upto your opponent to call that foul not you and you do have a responsability to your teammates.
