SJM and Tate Hook Up at Amsterdam Billiard Club

Over a month ago, Tate notified me he'd be in NYC over Easter weekend, and I was pleased to accept his invitation to hook up for some quality time over the glorious green felt.

Well, today was the day, and it didn't disappoint. It began in rather remarkable fashion when Tate showed thoroughly excessive generosity by bringing me a gift, wrapped and everything. When I opened it, there was a Jack Justis case inside, one that I really liked.

After some brief chit chat to become acquainted, it was on to pool. The nine ball match was very, very, very close over a several hour session, but far more importantly, the match was played with good sportsmanship, mutual respect and mutual encouragement. Tate is a super guy and a super player.

When the game was done, Tate insisted on taking me out to dinner, and we were joined by his lovely wife and daughter. We enjoyed some fine Italian cuisine and some friendly chatter.

I am still baffled and numbed by the whole experience, for when I encourage other posters to arrange a game of pool with me when they visit NYC, it is so that I can roll out the red carpet for them. On this occasion, Tate chose to roll out the red carpet for me, even on my home turf, and played the part of the generous host.

To every poster other than Tate, I hope you are lucky enough to meet Tate one day. To those who visit NYC, I'd love to shoot some with you when you are in town.

To Tate, thank you for a memorable day. It was a privilege to meet you, and I hope to catch up with you again one of these days.

sounds like a very good day and some nyce memories, i wish'd i had the chance to meet all of you guys my fellow AZBer's and play some good ol pool.

This type of experence is why I started playing 3 cushion. The challange is what is the greatest pleasure. Playing a game to simply take their money is no fun for me.. It's great to hear a story like this.

It is fitting that 2 of the classiest guys ever to grace a forum got to meet up in person. I'm glad it defied your expectations SJM.

Andy

That is awesome. That is what this board is all about. Loving the game and meeting the person you've only known as a digital-friend. I've meet a few guys in this board and some on other forums.

I can't afford rolling in the red carpet, but I can buy a beer or two or some more. ;)

I am back here at the Grand Hyatt thinking about my magical day with SJM. Let me say that SJM is truly a remarkable fellow. I stepped through the doors and entered the realm of east coast style pool. I was treated like visiting royalty as I was escorted into a private room, which SJM had set up. What a great room, with Tony Robles, Ginky San Souci, Jennifer Baretta, and Steve Lipsky being house pros. Pictures of Tony Robles and Sang Lee were on the wall in our room, along with the "high run" placard.

SJM is, without a doubt, the best safety player and strategic player I've ever encountered, including pros. We played 9 ball on the very fast, somewhat loose table, and I will say that there were not very many missed shots by either of us in the matches, which went on for 5 hours, but there were literally racks and racks where I didn't see a shot. There was a lot of run out 9 ball and a lot of back and forth safety battles!

It was classic defensive player (him) versus offensive player (me). I could hook him and his 2 and 3 rail rail knowledge bailed him out time after time . You can't out move him. He tested my kick safe game with hook after hook and two way shots. All the matches were so close it was unbelievable, and after 5 hours, we weren't separated by more than a couple of games.

What more could you ask for? Anyone visiting New York, look up SJM, a most gracious host. Oh, yeah, bring your "A" game!

Chris

Ps. It was cool of my wife to give me a day on our vacation to play pool. This was a blast and really made the vacation a lot more meaningful to me.

Wonderful story guys, thanks for sharing! SJM, you're a doll and I can certainly understand why Tate brought you a gift and rolled out the red carpet for you. ;)

Sounds like a great match. Can I get the video tape?
One thing for sure, Tate is a class act, and sounds like SJM is too.

Thanks for sharing SJM and Tate! If there were more players like you two in pool, more people would be drawn to it. I'm thrilled for both of you and very envious! It is so cool that you two played so close too.

I've made 4 or 5 friends via the pool forums and exchanged emails and PM's with several others. Tate for sure is a great guy. I'm really glad that him and SJM (another great guy) could get together and have such aquality match and a great get together.Good on you guys.

Sounds

like a little shot in the arm for why you like Pool so much when you meet great people and enjoy some good Pool together.

Thanks to all who wrote so kindly of me and Tate.

My greatest goal in sharing my experiences in hooking up with other posters is to encourage others to do the same.

This forum consists of so many whose passion for pool is comparable with my own, and by enabling me to interact with, and sometimes even meet, such people, AZB brings something very special to my life.

Sounds like two of the class guys on this forum had a fun weekend. Tate if your bringing justis (or one old rosewood, well its dark, scruggs sneaky) I'd buy you the the airfare (bus fare on my budget, but man those things can fly).

Seriously two of my favorite posters and by all accounts two of the best people on this forum. Glad you got a chance to play.

Two classy people have a classy experience. It couldn't happen to two more deserving fellows.

Tate has taken valuable time out of his busy day to assist me with some non-pool questions; in addition to numerous pool related questions.

SJM has kindly answered my inquiries about NE players.

I hope to meet both of you sooner, rather than later.

Thanks for sharing the stories guys, it sounds like quite the battle between two very contrasting styles.

What a fun day!

sjm...I've had the pleasure of playing with Tate, and helping him with his game, on his home table. He's also helped me with some other pool-related things, and has become a friend as well. I always will stop by and see him, anytime I'm in S. CA (along with my many other AzB and CCB friends). I hope we have a chance to get together like you and Tate did, the next time I have a chance to get to NYC! Sounds like a really great time was had by all!:D
