Skip & Jan's Billiards is getting all the 9ft's rebuilt.

Well, had lunch today with Mark Griffin at Skip & Jan's as he was in the Area anyway with Sunny playing in a tournament, so he came over to check out the location as he'd never been in this pool room before. He couldn't get on the rebuilt Diamond as the waiting list is to long:grin: so he grabbed the table next to it to play some during lunch. Even Mark was pretty impressed with the location...which I'm glad:grin:

Monday Natalie and I will be on the phone with the Diamond factory working out the details to purchase 12 new 7ft Smart Tables to replace her tired out junk bar boxes she already has, so once we get the 9fts turned around....THEY are next! Then, even though they'll be coin-operated...the $10.00 per hour will still apply to them as well, meaning food and drinks come off the hourly rental of the tables...spend more than your table time...and your table time is free:grin:

Now, for any of you out there that are wondering how you can get a hold of Zach, or Gordon to work on your tables....in the Phoenix area contact Zach at 480-720-8033, as well as the rest of AZ, and in the Las Vegas area get a hold of Gordon at 425-275-8255. Both of these guys can do the same level of work, and they both have my endorsement as recommended table mechanics...no one will be disappointed with either one of these guys:grin: They also know how to aftermarket modify any Diamond tables to play at the same level of play as a brand new Diamond;)

Glen, this was a terrific thread. Really enjoyed it. I'll be getting a new table shortly and maybe one of these two could build it. (Uncertain yet where the table is coming from, or if it will be a Diamond.)

i will start a thread on this later, but it needs to be mentioned here. I have a Diamond from the 07 US Open, its has had big fat bouncy rails on it forever. I played on it for a while until I couldnt stand it anymore. So I switched over to a GC, and put the Diamond in a different room.

Glen blows into town the other day and calls me up, we talked as we awalys do, were planning on taking over the world FYI, after that he mentioned he could do my Diamond table and make it play right. Glen has awalys been honest with me, 100% of the time. no bull-shit period. I told Glen I'm on short $$$ and I cant afford to have him redo the rails, he never mentioned what it would cost, I offered him chump change-I'm embarassed to say how little, but he is my friend and he most likely would have done the job for free-that how we roll.

he comes over grabs the rails and says see you tomarrow, I know better than 24 hours, 24 hours in Glens world is "see you in an hour bud". With my poor table sitting there with 6 pockets on it and screws, bits and pieces I waited for around a week, Glen comes over I leave pay him, I'm gone 5-6 hours and they are still fiddleing with the rails. There is no way I can stand paying Glen what I paid him and (I cant remember the other guys name sorry) what I did so I doubled the amount I paid him.

The reason I'm talking about $$$ and not the rails is the table is now absolutely the best box I have ever played on, there is one roll on the table, it banks like a billiard table, no funny bounces. I'd pay $1000 for that job on the rails. until you play on a table modified like Glen did to mine-you havent played on a diamond. Everyone who has hit balls on mine likes it now, and i'm talking some serious Diamond haters. its a whole different world. no fast rails and slow beds, the bounce of the CB off the rail matches the speed of the bed. Man is it nice.

I think i am going have to make Skip and Jans my place to go. I was there with Mark Griffin yesterday and finally got to meet Glen (RKC) The Diamond that Glen worked on looks awesome. I had fun too.

If you hurry up and call Diamond on Monday and talk to Aaron 812-288-7665...Diamond has some tournament used 9ft ProAms at the BCA warehouse in Vegas...it's not to far for me to run back there and load one up and bring it with me on my way back to Diamond next week...you'll have it by next weekend:grin:

Glen -
what are you using for a template for the ball area in these photos to indicate the kitchen. These look great!

if your in Vegas next week, please come over and toss the GC5 and put the Diamond in my pool room. I'd really appericate it.

Well I finally see where Skip & Jan is in Tempe, a very long drive from me.

Then you might just want to contact Zach to see what he can do to make the tables you play on....play like the ones rebuilt in Skip & Jan's...as he can even take a new GC5 and make the rails/pockets play even better than the factory can;)

Oh and as for the bar boxes, they are terrible and I think they should be sold off and get some Diamonds in there but we are talking in a perfect world where I would be driving a Ferrari. :grin-square:

I am just curious if the investment of say 15 Diamond bar tables would be worthwhile since a good deal of rec players go in there to hit balls around on them. I am not sure many serious players will appreciate them there but I know I for one will appreciate those 9 footers and when I get a late night urge to hit some balls I will swing by there once a week. Glad to see this room getting freshened up.

You should start looking for that bright red Ferrari you've allways wanted...because today...Natalie is placing her order with Brian at Diamond for 12 new Diamond 7ft Smart Tables:grin:

Glen

In an answer to some PMs, Zach will be in on Thursday to pick up 2 more sets of rails off the Diamonds to take them back to his shop and rebuild them as well, so the week after next you'll be up to 3 rebuilt tables to play on then. The plan right now is for Zach to rebuild 2 sets of rails a week until all the 9's are done:grin:

Glen

Real King Cobra said: What do you people think....should Natalie get rid of them and replace them all with Diamond 7ft Smart Tables?...Would anyone show up to play on them?

Glen- like we PM'd back and forth about...see my signature...I can do one or 25 tables. For a business or for an individual at home.

I am looking for that Ferrari now!

I stopped by the other night and saw the Diamond and it looks great, it was in play so I did not get a chance to play on it but talked to the guys playing on it and they really liked it. I do hope the investment that they are taking works out well for them in this tough economic time. I know they will have the best tables in the valley and the highest rates, I think the average in AZ for table time is about $5-$6 an hour.

I will be in there to play as more are recovered so I have a better chance on getting some table time on one. Glad to have some good tables to play on that are 5 minutes away from me.

Table price is according to the environment and quality of play the tables are in. You also get a better class of customers. Most kids have only 20 dollars, Most customers have more $ and a better respect for equipment.

My friends pool hall has 2 guys drop $500 once a week on table time@$12hr and food and loved all 5-8 hrs they were there.

Theres a lot more to table time, quality equipment, quality customers, and respect come with a quality price. More to it but I'm sure you get it.

I agree, $10.00 per hour per table is probably the highest rates in the state, but there's no per person rate...that's good, but trading the bar/food tab against the table time...tell me ANYONE's ever offered that before...on GREAT playing tables? I kid you not...5 glasses of pop...@$2.00 a glass...equals $10.00 in bar tab...and an hour of free pool.

Everyone should add up the amount they spend on drinks & food when they go out playing pool...then you'll see what I mean....because on top of that bill....you still owe for table time....but not at Skip & Jan's!
I just don't want the place to turn into the "hangout" for pool players that only want to play pool and that's it, there's plenty of other places around town to "just play pool"...maybe not as good of equipment as Skip & Jan's...but...that's the cost of doing business....if you don't keep up your equipment...then your customers will find somewhere else to play. If you treat your customers like all they are...are ball bangers...then fine. Skip & Jan's has a place for them to go and "bang" balls, as that's the kind of customers that keep a pool room "OPEN" for business...because they "Spend" money while they're out and about...playing pool;)

So, at Skip & Jan's....water...is $10.00 dollars an hour;)

This. Is. Awesome.

I play league pool on the 9ft tables at Skip 'n Jan's every Wed night, and have been for years. The Diamonds are old, and when I started playing there they were in absolutely awful condition. The biggest problem was each pocket on every table played differently, and none would take even a tiny amount of speed unless you hit dead center pocket. On some corner pockets you couldn't make the ball if you hugged the rail! They would bounce OUT away from the pocket even if you hit it perfectly. Obviously this was extremely frustrating and our team actually left and went to Main Street in Mesa for a time because we couldn't take it any more.

We like the atmosphere at Skip 'n Jan's, and now I'm really looking forward to the new session starting up!

As I've already said, I'd pay any room owner in AZ $500 if they could produce 12 9ft pool tables that played as good as the ones at Skip & Jan's when Zach is finished up there, and for any one that already knows my work....all you can do is tie it at best, but you're really going to have to know something about working on tables to even try that, and yes...Zach is THAT good,....good enough to set a standard that is going to be hard for anyone to compete with in AZ;)...which is why I picked him to train my secrets to, as well as Gordon from Las Vegas;)
