so somebody who smokes all his life, gets lung cancer because the smoking dramatically increased his chances of getting it, but smoking DOESN'T cause cancer? to argue that is merely arguing with semantics. it's a tube full of shite that's on fire being sucked into your body. even if the smoking/cancer connection wasn't already well documented, it surely stands to reason.

btw why is this thread seperate from drugs? is tobacco not a drug? this is one of my problems with the whole issue. why is tobacco legal and cocaine not? what's the difference? legalise everything or ban tocacco. the current half-way house doesn't make any sense. it just stays as it is because we're used to it for so many years. in the case of cigarettes in society, time breeds moral apathy. we just don't care about it any more because it's become so ingrained in us.

But you're forgetting that drugs like marijuana are GATEWAY DRUGS! It's not like these kids were smoking and drinking before they moved onto harder drugs... it's obviously the reefer madness that lead to it.

Like I've said before... I don't let our countries laws or politics have any effect on my moral compass. I judge for myself what is right and what is wrong. I don't need any politicians agenda, the big companies agenda funding him, telling me how I should be leading my life. If marijuana were illegal... I'd bet that the sales of alcohol & cigarettes would decrease dramatically. Politicians have never accepted money from the alcohol & tabacoo industry have they? That wouldn't have an effect on any of his votes would it?

Think for yourselves people. Please!

//end rant

if the concept of "Cause" escapes you , it isnt my fault...

That could eaisly be looked as 1 in 2 smokers never die from smoking..
just saying..............

BTW.. I dont smoke..........anything

And I ask you to compare smokers to non-smokers and see who's percentage is higher that have died from a smoking related illness.

dude.. I dont get it
you asked me to compare the % of death from smoking related cause between smokers and non smokers.........
??????

How does that invalidate my point.. which was actually the same point you made, just from the other side of it.

1 in 2 lifetime smokers die of a smoking related cause... which means that 1 in 2 dont...

If I lost my ass on that one then maybe I just aint smart enough to be in this conversation after all.

This is one thing i completely agree with you on personally. I don't need to be told how to live my life, what is right or wrong, or to be given hints to shape my moral views. All my opinions and views are completely my own and shaped by my natural self - i'm not a mindless government supporter for the sake of it, simply because they are the government.

However that doesn't mean that i don't believe we should have laws and restrictions in society, we do need them.

What's the argument? Smoke is bad for the person who breathes it. That's well known and it's fact... not rumor. Doesn't matter whether it's first hand smoke or second hand smoke... if you are breathing smoke it's bad for your health.

So, cigarete smoking is bad for the smoker and for everyone around the smoker and for the smoker to smoke around others is a selfish act. It's saying "I don't really care how my behavior effects you as long as I get to satisfy my craving."

If you deny that then you are in denial. It's a fact but addiction attemps to deny the fact so the addict will rationalize their actions..... rationalize.. to make their thoughts and actions seem rational/normal/reasonable.

I smoked for 49 years... from age 10yrs and 9 months to 59yrs and 10 months old, smoking from 1 to 3.5 packs per day, and finally stopped on May 1, 2002. It was VERY difficult to stop but I couldn't stand the look on my grandsons faces when I smoked. It made me see me as I really was. Denial can't fade that scene.

I chose to post via Smokey here because he is the only one in this thread so far that has a clue. Cancer nearly killed me a year ago. Bladder Cancer. Tumors hemmoraged, blood count under 4 when I got to the hospital. Yup, I'm a smoker. So now you smoke nazi's can bust on me. Smokey is right, all of my paternal family gets cancer, it is in our genes. My brother got it, he has never smoked in his life. My father quit smoking when he was 50, died at 72 from cancer.

We are all born to die. We are all born with free agency, we make our own choices. Government intervention only creats more government to enforce it, which means they want to control your choices, hence, your freedom disappears.....History, all is history.......:(

The penis comparison is so childish, it is always somebody else caused my problem, never me. Good grief, this is what our world has come to? I'm buyin more guns.....:D :D

Inhaling burning plant matter is going to have a negtive effect on you physically. So would inhaling air heated to the same temperature. More dangerous than the tobacco itself are the chemicals it's treated with to enhance the uptake and effect of the nicotine.
I am a non tobacco user.

A simple theory really

To me it is a simple as one person's rights end where another person's begin. As long as it is legal people have the right to smoke. However they don't, or shouldn't, have the right to force other people to inhale their smoke. Or to have it in their eyes and coating their skin by the end of a night for that matter. The biggest reason I don't play pool when I would like to is that I don't want to come home smelling like an ashtray and with the dirty clothes reeking of smoke until I wash them.

I use to smoke cigarettes, and think I start at age 12, have now quit, and still enjoy an occasional cigar.

the Cigar image is cool as I'm a businessman

This is something I do not get at all, when I think of cigars, I think of old, fat guys. "Cool" is the last thing I would ever think of. I can tell, when I see young guys smoking them, they think they are cool. Not even close.

I had my last 2 cigarette puffs on 9-11 of 2005.

Of course, I had my first heart attack on 9-7 of 2005.

I think there was a connection...

Since I just did the drig poll, I figured I would go the smoking route, I promis no more polls for along time.

I have never smoked anything ever once in my life, If I could I would smoke weed, It would probably be good for me but I hate smoke so much that I'll never do it, the Cigar image is cool as I'm a businessman(I know thats hard to believe) but I am. still no cigar for me, who the hell under 70 years old smokes a pipe with tabacco in it now days?

i lost my mom to smoking about 3 years ago, and I'm still not 2% over losing her, I might never be right because of that. If I was married and my wife started smoking anything I would file for divorce that day, I couldnt careless about the $$$ etc. I cant suffer the pain of losing anyone else to that. EVER. When I see friends smoke it hurts me, so there it is Fatboys Achelles heel.

Its amazing that I never picked up this habit. My parents owned a pool hall when I was a teenager. It seemed like everyone I knew was a smoker, but it just didn't appeal to me. I joined the Coast Guard in '97 and found that everyone in the Coast Guard smokes, people get started in the military because they find they can take more breaks from work without being questioned, still I didn't pick up the habit. I would just hang out with my boss on his smoke breaks and b.s. with him while he smoked. I still managed to take the smoke breaks without having to smoke. Now I live in Texas, I truly believe that the babies come out of the womb with a cigarrette in their mouth here. My wife and I are the only people on our street over the age of 16 who do not smoke, and my neighbors just think its bizarre that we don't. Still cigarrettes have no appeal to me. I consider myself really lucky, I've never found cigarrettes to be enjoyable.

and some women would think the guy in your avatar is YUM-O, and some would think - not even close. That's the great thing about life, everyone has a slghtly different view of things.

I don't smoke anymore, but I will occasionally have a cigar (maybe once a month), and not because it is "cool". I shouldn't even do that, but there are lots of things we "shouldn't" do....;)

It's #1

It's the #1 preventable cause of death. Does that ring a bell? Cause a light bulb in your head to come on? To see parents smoking around their babies is one major turn-off for me, "What are they thinking"!
